My DD (8 YR4) is struggling a bit with her maths. Are there any good websites which make maths fun and interesting so I can help her a bit at home?

'My Maths' is good as it does tutorials and a test if you want. I found it helpful to do the tutorials myself so i could help my DD. In the end we went the tutor route though.

CBBc bitesize have links to lots of printables

HeeHiles · 20/01/2014 13:57

Thank you Lasvegas and Gummi - will take a look at those sites now. Appreciate your input!

My 10 and 9 year olds fight over who does their MyMaths homework first!

Moggy72 · 20/01/2014 22:54

Ixl is also very good. 10 minutes a day makes a real difference.

One that I hadn't heard until the other day is nrich.maths.org. Needs more adult input than some of the others but there is some fab stuff on there.

woodrunner · 20/01/2014 23:06

Khan is good too. Very slow and clear. Great for children who don't grasp maths naturally and need to have every single step explained very thoroughly.

mameulah · 20/01/2014 23:06

topmarks

It has loads of different curricular areas.

HeeHiles · 20/01/2014 23:16

Wow thank you for all the suggestions!

Maillot I'm hoping it will have that effect on my dd!
I'll look at Ixl thanks Moggy
Hogwash Can I get that on Android?
Thanks Anchovies I will be there to help her but I'm hopeless at maths!
Woodrunner That one sounds like it may be good for me ;-)
Thanks mameulah Will look at that one too

Cheers everyone!

Hi,
We used Mathswhizz and thoroughly recommend it.
It is a pay per month but it really helped as the explanations are very visual and easy to understand .

HeeHiles · 21/01/2014 09:31

Thank you Stress Looks like I've got a lot of homework to do!

Sumdog is a site my kids use regularly throughout primary. They seem to enjoy it :)

HeeHiles · 21/01/2014 11:59

Thanks Hogwash I'll find it!

LadyGreenTea Thanks for your suggestion too - If nothing else at least I might become more proficient in maths aswell!

meala · 21/01/2014 12:11

Hi.

Sumdog and Manga high are both good. You can selectand set the topics you want to work on. Both are free for a large amount of content.

Mathsticks has got some good printables.

if your kids like apps, then squeebles is good for basic addition or multiplication skills but the app is not free.

good luck

HeeHiles · 21/01/2014 12:16

Thank you meala She has started slipping this term - she really enjoys maths so hopefully I can help her become enthusiastic about it again.

Noting all the suggestions for the future, thanks

HeeHiles · 21/01/2014 20:44

Wow! DD had a question on her homework tonight and had to subtract 6695-6439 (how much shorter is the Amazon than the Nile) It's no wonder she is struggling! What is the line method that is being taught? How confusing is that?? Blimey!

I showed her out it was done it the olden days and I worked in out in seconds - whereas she got so muddled and confused doing the line method - If any one can explain how/why it is supposed to help I would love to be enlightened!

We went on CBBC she enjoyed that, SumDog was fun but a bit easy apart from fractions which they have only touched on so far. I liked Ixl but it showed the old way of doing subtraction so not sure that will help. Will look at the others tomorrow night.

Had a look on YouTube for examples of the line method but it seems an awful long way and confusing way of doing subtraction!

TalkinPeace · 21/01/2014 21:29

number line is all about jumps

6439 to 6695

6439 - 6440 = 1
to 6500 = 61
to 6600 = 161
to 6690 = 251
to 6695 = 256

We use IXL maths. It's excellent and the website works well on the tablet as well. It follows the school maths curriculum "what you need to know in Year 2/ year 3 etc) but you can move forward and back between years/ topics. Daughter doesn't mind it.
