Does everyone but me dread the summer holidays?

DD finished school on Wednesday which is a bit earlier than most schools around where I live.

Once I've explained to people 'no she isn't ill' she's broken up already I get sympathy 'oh no, you have her home for a couple of extra weeks'. Not one person has said how fab it is!

Now I appreciate that some people will have working/childcare issues when their children finish school for the summer but in general do you all really dread your children being home?

I love the hols.I get to spend more time with my 4 and (fingers crossed)its hot and sunny so we can go out places.

pecka · 14/07/2006 18:26

I love it.

Totally relish the break from the normal routine. I HATE the school run, packed lunches, homework by the end of the school year!

Xena · 14/07/2006 18:26

another lover of holidays too, when I first read the thread title I thought it said does everyone dread the holidays, because I find that everyone else dreads them.

Blondilocks · 14/07/2006 18:28

I don't dread my LO being at home (although I'm at work so not really there much anyway!) It is nice her being able to stay up a bit later though so we have time to do more in the evenings.

Cam · 14/07/2006 18:28

I really like the summer hols, I feel I get to know my dd really well during her long (8+ weeks) vac, and I have the opportunity to appreciate how much she has changed since the year before!

Plus I enjoy not having the school run.

Kittypickle · 14/07/2006 18:32

I love it and can't wait until the end of next week - there are no words to say how much I hate making sandwiches for packed lunch. Really enjoying seeing them both chilling out in the garden and being able to get out and about to all the stuff round here.

wangle99 · 14/07/2006 18:54

Thank you! I was beginning to think I was one of a kind lol. Must be the area where I live.

I ditto everything you've said, no homework, staying up later, doing things together, no 'having to get back for the school run'.

These people obviously don't realise what fun can be had!

I LOVE the summer holidays. They always end with me determined to home educate so that life can always be like this. I never quite take the leap though.

apronstrings · 14/07/2006 19:02

I love them - live in the states been off 4 1/2 weeks already - another 6 to go. most people here put there children into summer camp for a lot or even most of it..I don't. Already have actually felt already that I can we only have a bit of july and August left.

LOve no early mornings, no rush to bus stop, no packed lunches, etc etc etc

wangle99 · 14/07/2006 19:16

That seems a long summer holiday apronstrings fab though. Bet the people around here would freak!

No, I love them and I can't wait to slop round in pjs still midday

Great going out with friends for days out, visiting Jools in the Lakes will be good and we are going to cornwall which I'm really looking forward to.

firestorm · 14/07/2006 19:32

i adore the holidays & agree with spidermama. i also find myself thinking about home educating by the end of them. i get quite depressed at the thought of them going back.
we dont even have a full 6 weeks off this year, i feel quite cheated though it does make fitting in work easier.

wangle99 · 14/07/2006 19:42

gobbledigook where are you going in Cornwall? That is where I am! (just don't mention you love the summer holidays!)

I love the hols, too. Can't wait to spend time with my 2 dds with no external pressures. Roll on next Friday!

SecurMummy · 14/07/2006 23:12

Love love love the hols!

I get all fluffy about how wonderful it is to have my children with me for a bit of concentrated time!

Mytwopenceworth · 14/07/2006 23:16

i dont dread my children being home, i love it - until the yelling and jumping and stamping and throwing things and screaching in my tabs and bouncing on me gets too much for my poor brain and i want to pack myself into a box and post myself to Siberia!

summer hols are fab when you are doing stuff and all having fun - its when you've run out of stuff to do, or money, or energy but the kids are like, i dont know, they are like the duracell bunny on acid and the summer holidays are very long to be 24/7 with no minute to even have a shit without an audience.

it all gets a bit mental, really.

alligator · 14/07/2006 23:25

british summer hols are so short tho MTW here in Britain. In Ireland its 2 mnths primary and 3 in secondary so cant see what all hte fuss is about

(can you tell mine aint at school yet)

Wordsmith · 14/07/2006 23:33

I would love it if it wasn't for work/childcare issues as mentioned in your first post. Summer holidays really do f*ck everything up in that regard.

Wordsmith · 14/07/2006 23:34

... plus DS does get so bored. He loves school.

mummyhill · 15/07/2006 00:19

Not sure yet first time round for us but did have a love hate relationship with half terms etc. Love not having to race round like a blue a**d fly but hate having to entertain 24/7

I love it, lazy mornings play all day except when I have to go to work and three lovely weeks camping in France, love spending the time with them.

m1m1rie · 15/07/2006 16:19

Summer is mine and DH's busiest time at work, so no, I don't love them, I absolutely hate them. DD1 (almost 12) whines all the time about being bored, but refuses to join in with anything I suggest. Ends up vegging in front of TV which annoys me more than anything, and drags along with me anywhere I take her, complaining. She only really wants to be with friends (we don't live near any of them) so the holidays are a nightmare time. Plus, juggling childcare and feeling stressed that I am not stimulating them enough. If we were ever lucky enough to get away (ha, ha) I'm sure I would feel differently. I love taking her shopping for her school supplies though, makes the new term seem closer.
