Does everyone but me dread the summer holidays?

DD finished school on Wednesday which is a bit earlier than most schools around where I live.

Once I've explained to people 'no she isn't ill' she's broken up already I get sympathy 'oh no, you have her home for a couple of extra weeks'. Not one person has said how fab it is!

Now I appreciate that some people will have working/childcare issues when their children finish school for the summer but in general do you all really dread your children being home?

I like them but I do have childcare issues this year, so really, I wish I had more holiday I could take from work or a term time only contract (which just isn't going to happen)

We ADORE the school holidays

Clary · 15/07/2006 23:45

I like the hols and boy are we ready for them here.
DD is so stressed (bless her, she's 5) that her eczema has flared up for the first time in a year.
We are at the seaside the first week and I am really looking forward to it.
Also like others I love the time to relax etc. Childcare is a bit of a runaround for us but otherwise I love to plan stuff to do and just not have to rush. I work 4 days/week tho so I enjoy the time with the children. I guess if you are SAHM you might feel differently.

I always remember my dd first day at school (8 yrs ago) and i felt quite depressed that we couldn't, as a family, just take off somewhere. At least in the 6 week hols, i feel we have a bit of our freedom back!

Used to be a Nanny and never found myself dreading holidays with other peoples children. I still don't with my own children (although I try to get DD1 to do a bit of maths and spellings so she doesn't forget everything). More likely dread her having to go back to school in September.

No I love the holidays! No getting up , you can have pyjama days if you want - me inculded! You can have fun do wjhat you like - why would you hate that??

sunnydelight · 16/07/2006 20:25

I love the holidays too and, having grown up with the long Irish school holidays, think that they are too short here. My boys were at a school for a couple of years where Summer hols were 8 weeks which was so much nicer; there was plenty of time to go away and to chill out at home as well.

SSSandy · 16/07/2006 20:28

THink it depends whether you're a SAHM or not.

fennel · 17/07/2006 14:35

I'm looking forward to them but that's because they haven't started yet and I have pushed to the back of my mind how feral my dds can get when not in school or childcare for long periods.

I think it depends on the age of the kids - there is a "golden time" of somewhere around 3 to 9 imo. DD1 is now 13 so holidays mean her loping around, raiding the fridge, trying to spend as much time as poss MSN messaging her mates rather than actually talking to them. Last year DD2 was 2 and the school hols meant 6 weeks of none of her usual activities, which unsettled her. This year, 3 and toilet-trained, life will be easy. Leave older sis to vegetate, or even better throw some money at her and make her go out with a (flesh-and-blood rather than virtual) friend, whilst dd2 and I head for the park, play in the paddling pool etc. The only reason to get fed up with the hols is that if you fancy going to somewhere popular you end up spending all day queuing.

I've always loved the holidays, no matter the age/stage of my four children. It's the not having to dance to someone else's tune that I adore. Dd finished on 7th July and goes back on 6th Sept, which I'm dreading already!

figroll · 18/07/2006 14:35

My two both love school, but equally they love the holidays. I also love them and feel quite sad when they have to go back - I remember the govt talking about cutting the school holidays and I was so upset about it. It is one of the best times of the year for me and my kids.

chalkie1 · 25/07/2006 17:24

hello I'm new to this site. Stumbled across it by chance. I have three boys under five and I do love the holidays. It gives me extra time with them to find out how much they have learnt and time to bring them up to scratch on things they're finding hard to grasp. I am lucky that my children actually love learning - which is rare in itself nowadays.
There are so many things you can do with them that makes learning fun and exciting that they rarely get too bored.I have to say though, it is really hard work!

AbbyLou · 26/07/2006 17:16

I love the holidays. As a teacher who works full time it's precious time with my 19 month old ds. Six weeks together is fabulous and I've learnt so much about him already in three days. He knows so many words I didn't know he knew and plays so nicely, it's really cute to watch.

firestorm · 26/07/2006 20:59

we broke up today. YAY!

handlemecarefully · 26/07/2006 21:01

I think it's a bit wierd when some mums dread the school holidays, can't help reflecting "how on earth did they manage when their children were pre schoolers"

geekgrrl · 26/07/2006 21:01

I'm really enjoying the holidays - the freedom to not have to rush about finding bits of school uniform, the children are all playing nicely together - it's going well.
