Why do they leave it till the last day of term to tell us next years teachers?

At our school they leave it till the last afternoon of term in July to notify us of next years teachers.

As I have twins I may like to discuss the decision.

Are your schools the same?

At our school, it's often not decided til that late, lol.

cece · 13/06/2006 22:19

Always a last minute decision - teachers normally only know a few days beofre the kids. We tell them the day their report goes home so not the last day though...

schnapps · 13/06/2006 22:41

Are the classes split up and mixed from year to year and you're concerned about whether your girls are put in the same/different class?

schnapps · 13/06/2006 22:45

...don't know why I assumed your twins are both girls, sorry if that's wrong Grin

lbgslug · 13/06/2006 22:46

my friend is a school secretary.
She says is it done quite deliberately to stop parents complaining!

rbj949703 · 13/06/2006 22:47

We already know who ds's teacher will be next year. We always find out at this time of year.

Beetroot · 13/06/2006 22:51

so you cannot argue with them about it

mrsbang · 13/06/2006 22:52

Depends on the school.

I haven't even thought about it yet, I know what is planned at the boys' school for September, but I know in previous years decisions have been made and then rejigged (with good reason) during the last week.

Only one class for two years though, and Head still does some teaching, so slightly different from most schools.

Tommy · 13/06/2006 22:55

I know in our school (I'm a governor - DS1 starts there in Sept) they have only had interviews for staff today so may not know until much later.
Apart from that, it may be as lbgslug says Wink
Also, there's no edcational reason why you need to know really - i's just curiosity or maybe wanting to peepare your child and talk about the next year's teacher.

Yorkiegirl · 13/06/2006 22:59

kids at the school I teach at will find out at the beginning of July. On 6th July there is a morning spent with their new class and teacher. Year 6 go to their new high schools for the day. My DD1 is visiting her new school for the day on that day too.

swedishmum · 13/06/2006 23:02

I have an educational reason. Y5 where ds will be next year is split - some with Y6, some with Y4. He's highly able but significantly dyslexic. If he stays where he is he'll be with much younger and sometimes less able kids and get complacent. If he moves up he'll have a teacher I have no respect for and be out of his depth in some writing areas. Move to larger school in next village seems inevitable.

Tommy · 13/06/2006 23:05

should have said in our school, there should be no educational reason.... no split classes - sorry. Smile

all4girlz · 14/06/2006 00:02

I do not know, we are still waiting to find out who my dd 3 has got next year.

Not too bothered about the teacher more curious /worried about her friends and who will be in the same class, it is very frustrating but I also think it is done this way to stop too many parents complaining.

JonesTheSteam · 14/06/2006 00:05

When I was a teacher the head wouldn't tell the parents until the last day because he couldn't be bothered to deal with any complaints! (He was not the most conscientious of head masters!!! Grin)

Hallgerda · 14/06/2006 09:17

I've usually found out a few weeks before the end of term. mumofthreebeauties, if you are concerned about whether your twins will be in different classes or the same class, that's a valid educational concern and the school really should be prepared to talk to you about it. If I were you I would make an appointment to talk to the Head about the matter before the decision is made so that you can influence it beforehand rather than complaining afterwards.

BudaBabe · 14/06/2006 09:28

Our school posts class lists and teachers on website a week before school starts back in August.

LIZS · 14/06/2006 09:44

We find out a few days before the end of term but not before the children will have already spent half a day in their new classroom witht heir new teacher, so a bit late to argue ! At ds' old school we'd find out by post about 2 weeks before term started and they remixed the kids every year.

bloss · 14/06/2006 09:45

Well at our school, they don't decide it till after the children come back... as they won't have final enrolments until then (too much chopping and changing over holidays). So children go to old class for the first day or two, where they are babysat, and then to new teacher once it's decided.

Terrible!

SoupDragon · 14/06/2006 09:46

No, we know the teachers already.

MadameButterfly · 14/06/2006 09:50

My DD is starting in receptin in September. DP and I are going to a new Parents meeting on Tuesday next week to meet her teacher and find out who will be in her class.

Also on 5th July she will spend 1 hour in her new class. I have gone for the hour just before lunch, and chosen to have lunch at the school that day. Will take her straight to nursery from there after lunch.

SKYTVADICT · 14/06/2006 09:51

We don't find out til we get the reports as the kids leave on the last day of term.

I always assumed, as some of the others have said, even the teachers don't know til just before.

They only did some interviews last week. We don't have split year groups but every year except Yr 5 has 3 classes. My DD1 is in YR 5 so they never know which teacher will be moving elsewhere ie. at the moment there are 3 year 6 teachers and only 2 will be needed next year but an extra teacher will be needed in year 5. That sounds confusing but I know what I mean Grin

coppertop · 14/06/2006 10:07

Ds1's school has a similar system to Yorkiegirl's school. Each class spends a day in their new class, with Yr6 visiting their new school and the pre-schoolers spending either a morning or an afternoon in their Reception class.

notagrannyyet · 14/06/2006 10:17

At our DS primary school a letter about next years teacher is included in the school report at the end of June. There are 2 or 3 classes per year and none of my sons have had the same teacher in years 3-6.Not sure if the school plan it this way or if it's just coinsidence. They also separate twins in juniors.

PanicPants · 14/06/2006 10:25

At my school I know what children I will have in sept already, and we do a class swop (ie.e, meet you new teacher) for a morning on July 5th, so everyone news quite well in advance. Teachers tell parents at parent evenings at the en d of june.

Sorry for typos wriggly baby on lap

swedishmum · 14/06/2006 10:30

Recently the children have come home with a note they've written saying "Next year I'll be in .... class" - don't like it done that way because of mixed classes. Lots of "You're not moving up because you're thick" from a couple of the less pleasant children...
