If a child at school is always in detention or in trouble at school - disclaimer - I am hot, sun scorched and knackered

should they be kept back from field trips/sports days as well?

Just had a nightmare few days of dealing with same five kids who are always walking out of class, being rude/abusive/bullying to other students/staff and a whole host of other reasons...........but the head (who rarely attends these trips) lets them go.

They took up sooo much of our (staff) time while the other kids were having fun/learning/looking out for each other running/jumping/high jumping/long jumping etc etc etc. We were literally at the end of our tether with these five and they stopped us cheering on the pupils or just sharing our attention around the other 193 or so that were great/not so great/injured/hot/tearful (when they lost)/needed water/food/plasters or WAY TO GO MISS DIDJA SEE THAT!!!! moments.

Am I horrible or just knackered and hot and worn out after a long day?

Hit me with it.

Redruby. For your information Mcdonalds is a very good company to join young and has very good prospects even non graduates can end up running or "OWNING THEIR OWN FRANCHISE" anybody who takes a job at Mcdonalds seriously and not just a joke job can have very good career prospects.

DH and I discuss a lot how and why we escaped . We both have a rather unpleasant judgy side and both remember looking at family and friends and thinking " you are a bunch of sad losers and I will not end up like you"

That loathing of our background and a fear of poverty drove us and still does .

Arisbottle. So if you would have incurred the debts that students do today you would have decided not to go to university then?

Arisbottle · 16/07/2013 23:09

No I wouldn't beatback, which is something I was going to post .i went to university with no fees and a full grant. There was no risk. The fees would have put me off.

Arisbottle · 16/07/2013 23:12

And it was going to university that enabled me to break free and reinvent myself. If I had not gone to university I suspect I would have had a series of grubby children by a line of feckless men and would have medicated my feelings of failure with gin and probably something much stronger and illegal.

beatback · 16/07/2013 23:17

So university saved you from the 9.25am show sponsored by foxy bingo then?

Arisbottle · 16/07/2013 23:22

I do take my Mum to bingo once a fortnight and she has been in the Jeremy Kyle audience.Grin

"We simply do not have time to go over every child's biography with a fine tooth comb and say "Oh yes his Dad walked out/Granny died/has an eating disorder/self harming issues/flat feet/gender issues so therefore we modify the teaching of a whole class to fit in with that child's 'needs'."

I didn't say I thought it was the class teacher's job to do any of that - what I was taking issue with was Arisbottle's response to Talkinpeace which implied that all that stuff about understanding backgrounds means being 'soft' - as though the only way you can set firm boundaries is if you do it in deliberately maintained ignorance of a child's background.

Arisbottle · 17/07/2013 00:49

Most day to day discipline happens with classroom teachers. As I said I have no issue in putting in additional support to help some students meet the same rules - but for a school community to run rules have to be followed.

Arisbottle. Can i ask you a couple of questions off topic but relevant. With the intense heat are you allowing kids to wear hats for protection from the sun and are you trying to make sure the kids who burn quickly are shaded from the sun. Are you giving the kids a little bit more slack in behaviour because they could become uncomfortable and irratable with the heat. Are you advising kids to make sure they are out of the sun and to drink water. I know its off topic but you could end up with kids who are going to misbehave though the heat.

Arisbottle · 17/07/2013 17:20

I don't teach little children so I don't stand at the door and remind them to put on sunhats although we do remind them to put them on when we are outside all day.

I expect children to behave, they may need different varying levels of support to meet that standard but that is my expectation. So if it is hot, they may need extra support to behave - my classroom is air conditioned for example - but the expectation is there.

Thank you Arisbottle its good to know that your school realised how dangerous the sun can be. I remember being at a school sports day many years ago and not being allowed to wear a hat, and because i am fair skinned i ended up not only being badly sun burnt but with bad sun stroke. I remember meeting a Australian skin Surgeon who was on holiday in the uk one warm summer day and he was shocked that no kids were wearing hats to protect them from the sun.He told me in australia even the kids up to 17/18 must wear hats at school to protect them from the kind of intense sun we have at the moment. The reason i say this because i know of some stupid heads who are even with this intense "AUSTRALIAN" like sun are threatening kids with hats on or those using sun cream with detentions or being sent home.

curlew · 17/07/2013 22:33

"The reason i say this because i know of some stupid heads who are even with this intense "AUSTRALIAN" like sun are threatening kids with hats on or those using sun cream with detentions or being sent home"

Surely not!

beatback · 17/07/2013 22:44

OH yes hats are not Uniform and sun cream is external . Some are saying to the kids "SECONDARY" its not our responsbilty to stop you from keeping out of the sun and hats are not regulation uniform therefore you can not wear them at school or to and from school. Some heads have problems with baseball style caps and are not prepared to make a exception for a week or so at the end of term.

Arisbottle · 17/07/2013 23:45

Why on earth would a head send a child home for using suncream? That seems very odd.

beatback · 18/07/2013 00:06

Aris. The head has no problem with the sun cream being applied before arrival at school. The head just does not want it to be put on at school because in the past he had had girls squirting the cream at each other and some pupils have turned up with st tropez tanning stuff. The head is stupid about standards and hates kids wearing non regulation uniform hence the stupid stance on hats.

Arisbottle · 18/07/2013 00:10

If a student was applying suncream as I was teaching them that would be a problem. As someone who fields this complaints often there is much more to it than simply suncream is banned.

Arisbottle · 18/07/2013 00:11

These not this.

beatback · 18/07/2013 12:02

Aris. There is always a reason no matter how petty or trivial. The problem is people in this country don't understand how dangerous the sun can be and I just hope that the pupils who are not allowed to wear hats or apply sun cream at school don't end up with bad sun burn or sun stroke and what happened with me having to be taken to hospital. That is why the school needs to responsable whether the student is 12 or 17. Anyway Aris air conditioning in classrooms its not a 5 star hotel its a school and the rules from the 1980s state you must freeze in the winter or melt in the summer otherwise you are not at school.

beatback · 18/07/2013 18:16

I just hope the pupil does not end up having to go to hospital with bad sun burn or dehydration. Air conditioning in schools! wow., maybe airconditioning in the classrooms i was educated in the 1980s would have resulted with me having better than grade E G.C.S.E English Grammar. OH THOSE LUCKY KIDS, I HAD TO GET UP AT 5 IN THE MORNING TO WALK TO SCHOOL 8 MILES THERE AND DID NOT GET HOME UNTIL 8PM WALKING HOME FROM SCHOOL.

beatback · 18/07/2013 18:27
