Late Grammar School offer: over the moon but stressed/flummoxed

What a 3 days we've had - any insightful comments welcome. In short:

  1. Our daughter was offered 3rd choice (her 11+ score was about 30 down on passmark);
  2. 3rd school is outstanding but we appealed to 2nd choice school as was our preference;
  3. Last Friday took calls from our local Ed admissions authority saying why appealed when have offer from grammar school?
  4. Said we hadn't. She made further calls to other relevant admissions authority and came back and told us we definitely have an offer and it would be in post next day (Saturday just gone);
  5. It duly arrived, and we posted our acceptance same day (they should have got it today) - verbal acceptance of place given by phone on Friday;
  6. On Friday the Authority also withdrew both our place at 3rd choice school and our appeal to 2nd choice school;
  7. Today i take a call from a friend whose daughter got substantially higher score than my DD - and she is 188 on waiting list;
  8. I call our admissions auth to check they received our acceptance (they said still in posttray but will be dealt with this afternoon);
  9. I query whether there could possibly an error and i'm told categorically 'no'. And if there was, we have a written offer, accepted it and they can't take it off our daughter;
10. Finally, my other DS is that grammar school.

I'm perplexed. What could be a possible explanation?

Quite tiggy. I was surprised about the HT having contact on the other hand OP is a current parent and on the other hand again the contact appears to have been a figment of my imagination so no case to answer really :).

Well I'm so glad that's over. The appeal was this afternoon and it was by far the most nerve wracking thing I've ever done. I'm ambivalent as to which way it will go and won't know until next week.

But I - and more importantly my DH - doesn't think I could have said or done any more than I did so whatever the outcome I can be assured that I did the absolute best for my DD :)

Now we have to wait for a few more days yet :(

TinaSurrey · 11/06/2013 22:59

Well done. Followed your whole thread since day one. Kept checking for updates. I assumed you'd be told the same day. Your stress levels must be through the roof and now more waiting. I so hope you win the result you deserve.

Annelongditton · 11/06/2013 23:48

I have followed your thread and really feel for you and your DD.

Really hope you get good news next week.

gazzalw · 12/06/2013 08:07

Hi Perma, well done for going thro' that - it sounds like a huge ordeal (it seems to me that the whole secondary school application experience is unless one gets first choice for one's DC(s)) but you've emerged the other side.....

Good luck with the outcome......how is LittlePerma bearing up?

Fingers crossed for next week....

cottoncandy · 12/06/2013 09:27

Another lurker keeping everything crossed.

MummyOfSunbeam · 13/06/2013 16:49

Perma I hope the appeal works and your dd is doing ok with it all. Best of luck!

Hullabalooey · 13/06/2013 17:34

Yet another lurker! Best wishes for a successful appeal. When your DD is in Year 13 and on her way to uni, this will seem like a bad dream!

pickledsiblings · 13/06/2013 21:56

OP I wish you luck too. You have had fabulous advice on here. I can't help thinking that other people in a similar situation to you (although obviously not identical as your individual situation is probably quite unique) ought to be able to benefit from it too. Not sure how that could be made possible, perhaps someone else will know.

PermaShattered · 13/06/2013 22:35

Thx all. pickled even if we're not successful - if even just one family benefits from the fabulous advice in this thread it will have been worth it. I do mean that. Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes (sadly!) we just don't always know why!
