State for us.
I don't want to start a debate (other threads for that!), just wondering where the percentage lies. tia

No dh/dp!!!!

Constitionally the church and state are separated in the UAS. But using their democratic powers, the good citizens thereof have voted in a man who hears voices from God.

Uwila · 19/04/2006 13:57

Church and state are most certainly separated in the US. The current president has no qualms about advertising his faith. But the separation is in law. There are no state funded faith schools. In fact you can not legally say the pledge of allegiance in school because it contains the words "one nation, under God". This was made illegal in the sixties.

doobydoo · 19/04/2006 13:58

Lip service may indeed be paid but i am sure actions speak louder than words.

Blu · 19/04/2006 13:58

Wasn't there a legal row recently because one of the Southern states wanted to put a religious dedication outside a court building and were beanned?

Blu · 19/04/2006 13:59

But there are no senators in the senate purely because of their position in the church.

expectingsummerihope · 19/04/2006 14:01

Grin bugsy2. God's house is always welcoming when you're feeling lonely Wink

Uwila · 19/04/2006 14:02

Yeah... forgotten the details. No doubt in the heart of the bible belt.

expectingsummerihope · 19/04/2006 14:04

He who heareth voices from God is always a welcome patient of mine Smile Or would he prefer a faith psychiatric hospital perhaps?

Uwila · 19/04/2006 14:09

Oh, there are some faith hospitals in the states. Like there could be a hospital say St. Mary of wherever that is catholic, and they treat according to the catholic faith. (i.e. if your pregnancy goes wrong abortion is not an option). Yikes.

expectingsummerihope · 19/04/2006 14:10

Are you serious?

Uwila · 19/04/2006 14:11

yep.

"In fact you can not legally say the pledge of allegiance in school because it contains the words "one nation, under God". This was made illegal in the sixties. "

I don't think that's true.

Uwila · 21/04/2006 07:48

I'm sure it's true. Although we did say at the school I went to (in the seventies).

Uwila · 21/04/2006 07:59

I'm sure there was a big hoopla about it when I was kid. But, I can't find the evidence. It's all about separation of church and state. But, more recently, there was a case in California where is was deemed a violation of the separation of church and state:

\link{http://www.socialstudiesforkids.com/articles/currentevents/pledgeofallegiancedecision1.htm\The Pledge of Ellegiance: Is it illegal?}

Uwila · 21/04/2006 08:00

Allegiance

Uwila · 21/04/2006 08:03

And for those who aren't familiar with it:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.

expectingsummerihope · 21/04/2006 13:58

I pledge allegiance to chocolate

Tinker · 21/04/2006 14:02

"We do actually have a national religeon in this country. What is wrong with government funds contributing towards it? That religeon is of coure the Church of yes you guessed it England. (This obviously applies to England not the whole of the UK) "

Who is the "we" in that statement? This country was Catholic before the creation of the C of E.

expectingsummerihope · 21/04/2006 14:08

Ah yes, when Henry viii decided to make up his own so he could divorce the butt ugly Anne of Cleeves

Uwila · 21/04/2006 15:17

I'm not really saying we should have a national religeon, just that we do. Okay, I use "we" loosly as I am American. But I mean residents and citizens of England... or maybe I should just sqy citizens, which of course excludes me.
