Dd's came out with letters today saying that there is an impending strike on tuesday and as it will involve many of the schools support staff, teaching assitants, cleaning staff, kitchen staff etc, the school have decided that it would be in the interest of the health and safety of the children to close.

Opinions please.

Teachers and remaining support staff are being asked to work to rule in support(IE don't cover anyone elses work)

Rach69 · 23/03/2006 20:16

Our primary school is closed as it is a health and safety issue. Haven't heard anything from the secondary school.

Staff who are members of other Unions will not (well, should not) cover work that is done by members of UNISON and GMB on Tuesday as we will be supporting their action not undermining it. Many of their members are not on particularly high incomes and the effect of proposed changes to their pensions will be devastating for many. I know the strike action will cause countless people childcare difficulties but do try to see it from the point of view of those whose pensions are threatened.

Yes I too thought my dd would have to picket till school comes in for the day until my friend who is teacher said she would watch her for me.

dinny · 23/03/2006 20:25

dd's nursery bit of school was going to be closed in the pm but it's not any more.

nutcracker · 24/03/2006 10:57

Ours in still closing (sutton coldfield in brum by the way).

Need to check if the nursery is open or not. It is a private nursery but it is on the school site and they do use alot of the schools facilities ie kitchen.

I will be on strike and dd&ds2's primary school is closed, tho ds1's sec school has not said anything.
I wont be able to picket either phillipat as I wd have to take them with me and tbh I am seeing that as a good excuse Blush
It is an important issue though, as so many support staff and council staff are low paid already and threat to pensions can be v significant.

joanna4 · 24/03/2006 16:46

Well we are closed, today parents are in uproar but to be honest our head has known the score all week so if it is short notice then it isnt down to us.DS secondary school is open as normAL.

chestnutty · 24/03/2006 21:01

Both myself and dh are on strike (2 days pay gone) plus my dds are off school. The civil service went on a 2 day strike and got a better penison deal. The NHS have a better deal and teachers, so why should council employees be the only public sector workers to suffer.
(jump off soap boxAngry)

Had a letter today to say that dd's school is NOT closed on Tuesday!

Aimsmum · 24/03/2006 21:54

DD's school is closed, and there is a possibility of my work closing for health and safety reasons, as all the security workers will be on strike.

But if my work stays open, I will be unable to take any kind of leave and will have to have a days wages taken off me to stay at home to look after DD, despite not being in the union.

ExP is in the same position to as he also work in education, so he can't take any holidays either!

All in a good cause though, eh? Grin

cutekids · 24/03/2006 22:00

We're in Denbighshire and our school's closed on Tuesday

KBear · 24/03/2006 22:06

We had a letter tonight - but our school is staying open! yay

ButternutSquash · 24/03/2006 22:08

Yes, dd's school is closed on Tuesday, as is the nursery school where I work.

kid · 24/03/2006 22:13

our school is closed, I still have to go to work there though (not a member or union). I may have to take both my kids with me, not looking forward to that at all.

Yorkiegirl · 24/03/2006 22:13

we are closing now. And I also have to go in to work as usual.

Linnet · 24/03/2006 22:21

My dd1 came home with a note today saying that her school will be closed on Tuesday. I already knew this morning that it would happen as we had an e-mail at work telling us that all council buildings, primary and secondary schools, libraries and museums will be closed to the public. I work in education, not a teacher but another department and I still have to go into work, it's going to be a long day on Tuesday with no customers.

Gingerbear · 24/03/2006 22:23

Yup, DD's nursery is closed - they are striking over loss of pension benefits.
I support them!

ScummyMummy · 24/03/2006 22:25

I think most public sector workers are striking. Partner is and all my colleagues are too. Don't think boys' school is closed but they will be delighted if so as they are desperate to see a picket line and shout at people who cross it...

ma2cra · 24/03/2006 22:29

Eldest off school (6th day he's missed through strike action this school year)

Younger two will be in school.
