Dd's came out with letters today saying that there is an impending strike on tuesday and as it will involve many of the schools support staff, teaching assitants, cleaning staff, kitchen staff etc, the school have decided that it would be in the interest of the health and safety of the children to close.

Opinions please.

on occasions when Unison have gone on strike, our school has had to close - it absolutely wouldn't be possible to run the school without them. Teaching staff have still gone in for those days though.

nutcracker · 23/03/2006 16:58

Hmmmmm yeah i think if the teaching assitants were going to be there then it would be ok, i mean the kids could take packed lunches and whatnot.

Pain if you work though, which i don't but still a pain.

schools have comprehensive health and safety policies and insurance as well - legally they wouldn't be able to open. we even have to have a locum maintenance person when ours is not in

Nutcracker, where is your school, if you don't mind me asking?
Dh works for local council and they are apparently on strike on tuesday, to do with pensions, so just thought wonder if it will affect schools here.

auntyquated · 23/03/2006 17:09

we are closed on tuesday as caretaker is on strike, cleaners, kitchen staff and many TAs.
tbh i am not sure if the rest of us will be allowed in or not. it would be a good opportinity for us as we are moving many classes into other rooms, but i htink it may mean that we'd be crossing the picket line if we did.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 23/03/2006 17:11

ds2 school is closed for the day

GDG · 23/03/2006 17:16

rummum · 23/03/2006 17:24

joanna4 · 23/03/2006 17:35

Mercy · 23/03/2006 18:37

Ours will be closed and quite right too

bubblerock · 23/03/2006 18:47

Ds's school isn't closing (Lancashire)Had a letter today saying 18 staff will not be in school but this only affects games for juniors as it is off site. Teachers are covering break times and senior management are covering lunchtime, afterschool club is closed though.

There is going to be a picket outside of school to.

nikkie · 23/03/2006 19:05

I will be striking but my school is open some children will not be in though. My kids school is open .

philippat · 23/03/2006 19:34

DD is off - they're closing the nursery but not the rest of the school, makes sense really. I'm striking too so thankfully not an issue for me (although I don't feel comfortable taking DD to picket so will have to find a solution to that).

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 23/03/2006 19:35

My dad (works in school) has heard nothing about this.... but as it is he has an interview at another school on tuesday anyway!!!

GDG · 23/03/2006 19:36

Apparently the TAs and canteen staff are striking next Tues but the school is still open as normal. Phew.

GDG · 23/03/2006 19:37

Nursery will not be open though.

nikkie · 23/03/2006 19:41

j and rs mummy he isn't looking at a heads job is he? My schoo are interviewing for a new head on Tues.

BTW anyone who didn't realise this is a NATIONAL strike comprised of UNISON and GMB (possibly more I don't know)

spursmum · 23/03/2006 19:57

I better check with ds' nursery as I haven't heard anything from them, but as they have a specialist speech unit with a lot of TAs I think I'd better check.
Thanks for the warning. I didn't have a clue!

Yorkiegirl · 23/03/2006 19:59

we are still opening I think. Not entirely sure when I left.

Arabica · 23/03/2006 20:02

Yeah, closed Tuesday from 1pm (NE London)

Blandmum · 23/03/2006 20:05

We will be colesed if the strike goes ahead. We are being asked to go into work (and rememeber My kids will be off too) if there are no picket lines to cross. The head (and unions) will not expect us to cross a picket line unless wee want to do so. If that happens we are expected to work at home.

We would be without, caretaking staff, cooks, cleaners , support staff, tachnicians, librarians, cover supervisors, support staff for break and luch supervisions.

elliott · 23/03/2006 20:07

school and nursery closed for me. Find it hard to see how a school could open safely with no support staff: dinner staff, playground supervisors, caretakers, teaching assistants, office staff. Think it would be most unreasonable to expect teachers to cover their duties! And what about meals?
