The thread will no longer accept messages ( private school opinions)

I would hate anyone to feel I was shirking answering their criticisms.

Since I do not have the thread visible - replies to the following

a) Metabilis - I could also argue some posters do not seem real on NM. I find it hard to believe that so many are "Oxbridge" graduates. Just sheer weight of numbers but I would not say they are not real or genuine or untruthful as you have said to me.

I also know that a real graduate from "Oxbridge" would have said something no poster here has said. Now it may be that they just don?t want to be specific or it may be that their Oxford and Cambridge isn?t the same one as I attended.

But no matter, they are still as real as anyone here and the truth of their qualifications/ university does not stop me replying to their posts on face value or valuing the post for what it says. .

b) mrz - I asked the question because of the article I cited in the first post. I was interested. No motives beyond that despite what some say.

c) Happy? Whoever - if you want to ask about why some posters choose a private school when they have good state ones on the doorstep be my guest. It doesn?t interest me. I am not aware anyone on the thread said they had done this anyway. I think by and large the feeling was that private schools were chosen because state provision was not acceptable in most cases.

d) Not sure who - I am not employable in another country! Most will not accept me because of my age.

My DW is Canadian and we have looked into moving there however, she can go (obviously) so can my DS but I can?t get a work visa. Immigration in Canada is very strict. Work in Canada (as many countries) is Canadians first.
Teachers are not required. I am not qualified in Canada (Canadian teachers are not qualified here either).
Many reasons.

If I can manage to find the necessary finances and other factors to enable me to pass immigration control I would go to Canada. I think DC would have a better chance there. We would still elect private schools though. Hope that answers you.

Since the thread is now closed, lets leave it that way. No point in carrying on . I think my questions were answered
Thanks to all who contributed.

Well if you're allowed to start a new thread just to get the last word, I'm going to use it just to point out that my OED isn't online, it's a book on a shelf in my house Grin. That's all.

Metabilis3 · 02/08/2012 18:01

Jabed - I am not the only person who has found your posts extremely inconsistent. I have never claimed to be a graduate from 'Oxbridge' (since such a place doesn't exist. I am proud to be a Cambridge graduate but it really is a matter of indifference to me if you believe that I am or not. I might just as well be a giant spider - however if I am a giant spider at least I'm a giant spider who is not inconsistent in her posts, or one who makes up definitions and then tries to wriggle out of it when challenged.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 02/08/2012 18:06

Say what you like about this one, he aint a quitter.
I have to admit I have often gasped and stretched my eyes when certain posters claim to be "Oxbridge" (noone here I hasten to add) but then I recall that Oxford will let bloody anyone in. Toby Young, Rachel Johnson - tons of absolute arseheads.

jabed · 02/08/2012 18:15

metabilis, I can more readily believe you are a giant spider than accept you went to Cambridge. If you were a graduate from Cambridge (or Oxford) you would know why that was. Similarly all your Oxford and Cambridge MN
"friends" You are a giant spider out of Dr. Who sounds far more reasonable. :)

I do not mean to offend but you seem to feel you can accuse others but dont like being asked questions about your own inconsistencies.

I guess you want to keep this going? I am not bothered.

Good day

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 02/08/2012 18:17

Well I am very busy wondering what Metabalis has said that no Cambridge graduate would say! Intriguing!

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 02/08/2012 18:18

Yes, look at you not being bothered. On the thread that you started Hmm

lucidlady · 02/08/2012 18:21

So what would an Oxbridge graduate say that no poster has said?

rabbitstew · 02/08/2012 18:27

Oooh. We are getting childish, aren't we? I think it's perfectly acceptable for someone who doesn't want to give too much personal information away to say that they went to Oxbridge/one of either Oxford or Cambridge, not mentioning the college in question, or even the degree. As for any other things that such a person may or may not say, perhaps in jabed's day (I would bet when A-level Latin was still a requirement....) there was some special sign for people from Oxford or Cambridge, but maybe these days there are too many foreign and state school students getting in to continue such traditions...

breadandbutterfly · 02/08/2012 18:32

Nope, no special masonic signs, I'm afraid. jabed is an arse if he thinks anyone is going to name their college. Might as well name their address while they're at it.

Can this thread now die, please? I promise not to contribute, though know it is like scratching an itch...

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 02/08/2012 18:35

Yes, something like Peterhouse would very much narrow the odds on outing oneself, in particular.

But you can't start a thread and then say nobody should post on it, really.

rabbitstew · 02/08/2012 18:37

Well, I wasn't actually going to post on it.
ps was A-level Latin ever required?... Grin

sohia · 02/08/2012 19:14

I used to be guilable. An old school friend of mine told me she was going to Oxford. I thought how clever she was. I knew she hadnt been that good at school but people change dont they. Then one day someone told me she had gone to Oxford Polytechnic . Thats now Oxford Brooks. Lots of people can go to Oxford and graduate but they arent really Oxford graduates as we understand them. The same goes for Cambridge. A lot of people went to Cambridge Polytechnic or sometimes the Teaching College there. Its called Angela Ruskin now.

You could also get qualifications from the Department of Continuing Education which would take anyone. Jeffrey Archer for example. So naming your college sorts the real clever people from the fakes. But they all went there. I am not so guilable anymore. I wondered about so many clever people on here and all two bid teachers. We can all go to Oxford Brooks.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 02/08/2012 19:21

Angela Ruskin, she's a real idiot. Did you know if you look up 'guilable' in the dictionary, there is no entry? Wink

meditrina · 02/08/2012 19:22

"So what would an 'Oxbridge' graduate say that no poster has said?"

I'm intrigued. I would never have thought of that group of graduates as homogenous. Then again, I didn't read the first part of this thread, so have no idea what it might all be about.

rabbitstew · 02/08/2012 20:06

I think Oxford Brookes is supposed to be quite good, isn't it? I agree, it is dissembling to say you went to Oxford if you went to Oxford Brookes; and silly, since going to Oxford Brookes is nothing to be ashamed of.

kalidasa · 02/08/2012 20:22

I totally missed the original thread but really want to know what the secret Oxbridge shibboleth is!

Metabilis3 · 02/08/2012 20:24

I'm not naming my college and matriculation year because the roll is a public record and people both know where I live now, and where I went to school. So it wouldn't take much intelligence to out me. Grin But, Sohia/Jabed believe what you like and enjoy your game.

Metabilis3 · 02/08/2012 20:27

@Meditrina there isn't one. There might be secret handshakes for older males. All that sort of guff had been dispensed with by the 80s though. Grin

rabbitstew · 02/08/2012 21:20

I know - the real McCoy would have said "42." That would show how clever they really are.

Metabilis3 · 02/08/2012 21:22

@rabbit I mentioned B ark in the last thread and nobody picked up on it. Grin

rabbitstew · 02/08/2012 21:25

Now I know you're for real, Metabilis. Grin

MainlyMaynie · 02/08/2012 21:29

I found the naming of the college by jabed bizarre actually. It's pretty obvious that most people won't name a college as it might out them. But it's also unusual to say 'uni - college' in the way jabed did.

Incidentally jabed, you have full freedom of movement within the EU. Oh and of course OED is online.

Metabilis3 · 02/08/2012 21:29

What breaks my heart is nobody except, to be fair, Jabed, gets my username. :(

rabbitstew · 02/08/2012 21:32

You aren't a sci fi geek are you, metabilis?

rabbitstew · 02/08/2012 21:43

As for teaching overseas - don't international schools accept all sorts of qualifications?
