" I can't see myself accepting thaem as the equivilant of 3 GCSEs either." - what is your job, Crabapple? They are what they are.

Personally, I think the structure and spec of BTECs is more appropriate for certain subjects than the structure of GCSEs. Because of the new rules about no more than 2 non-GCSEs being included in headline figures, I am currently looking into GCSE Drama/Performing Arts specs as I might have to go back to them. It makes me want to cry! BTEC Performing Arts is a much better course.

AFAIK, before Lead IVs were put in place, each centre had a moderation visit every year - certainly that's how it was for Performing Arts in my school. It's only that schools don't get routinely seen each year. We still get a QA visit, and can be spot-checked. Not worth taking the risk of not having things in order.

Is she doing GCSE and btec science? Single, double or triple GCSE? applied? What size btec? This would seem like unnessessary replication. If she does double ( core and additional, not applied) she should be able to keep her options open if she decides to look into science A levels later. I would say the science btec is totally unnessesry, then.

Crabapple99 · 20/12/2011 00:36

Are you edexcel evil twin? Certainly we had no moderation at all for the last 5 years ourslves, nor have our feeder schools. Its changed now, under the new lead IV system.

I totally agree about it not being worth the risk of letting things get out of order, however am very much in the minority.

Sorry - I went to bed

Yes the Btec seems un-necessary to me too, but based on her results she can have 1 2 or 3 sciences.......so in effect 4 (so it seems to me)

The only thing I do know is she can't do Science A-levels without the relevant GCSE & she can't become a teacher without at least one science GCSE

As I am just finishing off a degree with OU; I have to subscribe to the theory that after she has danced, she can start studying again as I did. Although she will have to start from a lower place (eg GCSEs achieved, A levels to obtain, whereas I had the A-levels)

I don't know what your mean by "they ae whatthey are" evil twin, a baker may say a loaf of bread is worth £3, but if noone will pay more than £1 for it, that is all it is worth!

Actually, I think you and I have a lot in common. I value btec level 2 very highly. My students benefit from the course content itself, the self disipline, the maths content, the english content, the practical applications, the ICT, the oppertunities to develop research skills, presentation skills, team work, etc etc. AND i am a strict marker, so the grade they get is actually the grade they have got.

Students are constantly let down however, by these courses being abused by schools, graded inadequaetly, and used inappropriatly. This means the end qualification has little meanuing, and like I said, I am likely to disregard it, unless I personally know the student, or the teacher who has graded it.

i enrol students onto 6th form course - our school has a very large 6th form, and we take from many of the local comps who don't have 6th forms. A distinction in a btec level 2 diploma might normally be counted as 2 GCSE equivilant for the purposes of finding the 5 GCSE A-Cs needed ,to be considered for an A level course,(might, and we wouldn't count 2 btecs) HOWEVER it could not be used to get onto an A level in that subject, you would need a good GCSE for that, in academic subjects such as ICT or Science

KatyMac, hope things work out for your daughter. Double science GCSE ( as long as it isn't applied) should be all she needs to keep her options open. Triple is often unnessessary, and unless you are sure the student will do well, they would normally get better amrks jsut doing the double.

Please keep us posted. I'd like to hear what happens at your meeting, also proffessionally it helps to hear what different things schools are doing at this level.

Crabapple I agree- we do seem to have similar views. I too look carefully at BTECs when taking students into 6th form and whilst I would accept a Level 2 Diploma as 4 GCSEs, would look at the subjects and courses they want to do- we do a number of Level 3 BTECs and I do allow students to take a Level 3 BTEC with Level 2 BTECs as their entry grades. I would be more careful if a student had 2 BTEC Diplomas but no Cs in traditional GCSE subjects and wanted to take academic A levels. I do find it irritating though when people simple dismiss BTECs- I see how hard my students work, and I am a strict marker. A distinction is definitely a distinction in my class!

What solutions would other school come up with for DD

I suppose Flexi-schooling is a possibility, but not ideal

Doing less GCSEs would be good too

As a (trainee) science teacher I really can't see the point of science gcse and btec. If they are offering the option of dual award gcse science this is the one she should take. It is more highly valued than the btec. The only reason to take triple science would be if she wanted to take science a levels and even then it is not necessary.

ElphabaisWicked · 20/12/2011 20:24

To a certain extent I agree with seeker. Any dance she does at GCSE/btec level will not prepare her for vocational traning/a career - it is the stuff outside that counts. It is slightly different at A level/btec if she goes to a school/college who are more specialist or very good at what they do.

KatyMac · 20/12/2011 21:11

ElphabaisWicked she does waaaay too much outside of school; she just conned me into another 2 classes

very good post Eviltwins. I have posted a nearly identical post in the secondary forum as i was accused of working for Edexcel when defending BTEC and the work that is required in a very similar thread!

In terms of my subject, I have found that those who have a distinction in BTEC actually are more experienced when it comes to answering AS/A2 questions in terms of relating to the scenario and bringing in other aspects. But, I will not accept anyone onto AS without Distinction.
