Spellings for 5 year olds/year 1 - boring I know!

DS has brought home spellings to learn for Monday. Usually consist of six 3 or 4 letter words but today he's been given the days of the week to learn! Am I the only one the think that's a bit hard at 5 years old?
Any feedback, especially from primary teachers, is appreciated. TIA

Sorry joined this hread late.

But how are they supposed to learn to spell the words? Using the sounds or the letters? eg. "said" would be spelt ss-ah-e-duh rather than s-a-i-d. I'm assuming its the sounds, as this is what they have been using since reception.

DS knows the days of the week. Yes, they are some of the least intutive spellings in our language. Got to be done sometime though.

Anyone got any good tips for learning spellings? DS1 is 5, in yr 1, and deaf. He reads well but learning spellings is a real battle as he doesn't hear the sounds, he currently has the ORT level 4 words to learn, there are 29 of them and the rate we are going he will be 29 before he knows them.

ours don't get spellings .. the current thinking is they'll pick it up

I don't believe that (DS is year 1) so I bribe him with 10 spellings = 10p

have to say though that the days of the week are NOT on the reception / KS1 lists that I've seen

LIZS · 21/01/2007 13:46

They are on the Year 1/2 list but just as collective Days of Week , Months of Year etc, rather than individually

Is he Year 1? We have given ours (I teach Year 1) the days of the week to learn. Could you get him to practise them when it is the day of week. TBH most of mins still find it really hard - so we write the day it is at least twice a day on their books to practise.

here (p4) , adding days of week, months of year, numbers to twenty, name and address of child and school to your list, I think.
