Spellings for 5 year olds/year 1 - boring I know!

DS has brought home spellings to learn for Monday. Usually consist of six 3 or 4 letter words but today he's been given the days of the week to learn! Am I the only one the think that's a bit hard at 5 years old?
Any feedback, especially from primary teachers, is appreciated. TIA

I was given a list of key words for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, and the days of the week are definitely in there for Year 1 - so I'm not really surprised that he's been given them.

Hulababy · 05/01/2006 18:14

If you enlarge this image on here then Months are definitely ont he Y1&2 set of key words, so can imagine days of the week are too.

WigWamBam · 05/01/2006 18:18

When you think about it though most of the days of the week are three and four letter words with "day" on the end so maybe it's not so hard for them to grasp as we might think.

Getting him to spell Wednesday off the top of his head could be fun though!

crazydazy · 05/01/2006 18:19

DD is in year 1 and they have to learn the days of the week too.

Hulababy am thinking of buying the magnetic words for DD as she would love these. Thanks.

littlemissbossy · 05/01/2006 18:19

Thanks for your comments and the link. DS is still finding reading quite difficult, so days of the week are impossible for him. Didn't realise they were key words.... shall look forward to months of the year LOL.

agree spellings very hard

are you sure they aren't words to learn for reading rather than spelling?

littlemissbossy · 05/01/2006 18:21

No Enid, they're in his spelling book

Wednesday's impossible for a 5-yr-old

I had to learn it Wed-nes-day and still find myself muttering that (with tongue sticking out ) whenever I write it!

robinpud · 05/01/2006 18:44

They are on the wretched list along with colours, months of the year, own address.. but they are for Year 1 and 2.
Don't get too hung up about it... Wednesday will probably be the one that sticks and Friday the one that won't.
am wildly impressed at anyone getting spellings sorted already! We were too busy sitting in the staffroom scoffing the xmas chocs that people didn't like!

littlemissbossy · 05/01/2006 18:57

must admit my ds's teacher is really organised - so much so that he even brought spellings and homework home for the christmas holidays

Flipping 'eck they're expensive - you can get the same things - in Wilko's for MUCH cheaper

WigWamBam · 05/01/2006 19:12

They're not that much cheaper, QoQ - they're £2.99 a set in Wilkos, and you have to buy 4 sets to get what you get in the GLTC one.

My dd adores hers though, so well worth the money.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 05/01/2006 19:31

the ones I got DS1 were £2.49 - so that was just under £7.50 for all 3 packs - if you buy those ones on the link it'll cost you nearly £18 for the 2 sets !

Hulababy · 05/01/2006 19:38

We got the reception key words from Wilkinson's too - much cheaper!

WigWamBam · 05/01/2006 19:41

What annoyed me about the ones from Wilkinsons is that some of the words dd has brought home from school aren't in the Reception pack, so I had to buy all four packs to get the words she needs to use. Cost me £12 in total ... and there are still words that she has learned that aren't in the set.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 05/01/2006 19:58

DS1 has learned 2 words not in the packs (so far) - but I thought these were simply words they were expected to know (according to the powers that be) by the end of yr2 - surely 'additional' ones aren't going to do any harm??

Jodee · 05/01/2006 20:04

Hmm, should I be concerned that ds is also in Y1 and has never brought any spellings home to learn??

popsycalindisguise · 05/01/2006 20:15

are you still looking for the list f key words?
which year group

WigWamBam · 05/01/2006 22:02

No, of course additional ones aren't going to do any harm ... my point was that it's annoying because dd keeps wanting to make sentences using words she knows well, and can't because they're not part of the packs. And as she's only been at school for 3 months I would have expected that all the words she has been learning in Reception would have been from the list of key words.

Art · 06/01/2006 18:34

I havent read what everyone else posted so hope I'm not repeating info.

The Year1/2 list is a guide for reading, not spelling, primarily. By the end of Year 1 children should be able to spell some of the words, but not all by any means, and as you point out, the days of the week are tricky.

I would imagine that the whole class have probably been given the same list of spellings and I'm sure the teacher doesnt expect everyone to remember them all perfectly. If the children write the date on their work at school they will get lots of practise and this set of words will probably be revisited several times before the end of year 2 so dont panic.

Yes magnetic letters on the fridge are a great idea and no spellings are not compulsory in year 1 - some schools may feel they do enough within the literacy at school without sending spellings home.

Hope this puts your mind at rest.

ladymuck · 06/01/2006 18:52

WWB, I don't think that the 45 words are a target in that sense. I think that the hope is that the child can read those 45 words, many of which are irregular in some respect, as well as reading some additional words, especially cvc words (sat, pin etc). There are so many of the latter that I'm not surprised that they're not listed in a set. Perhaps a set of magentic letters would help plug the gap?

Art · 06/01/2006 20:36

I bought a roll of magnetic tape in our local toy store to make magnetic words for ds that didnt come in the pack. He wanted to use words like our names, places we'd been etc. so we wrote them on bits of card and stuck the magnetic strip on the back. Hey presto! He even got quite into spelling too writing his own.
