Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

Sidge - thank you. I actually worked out how many daaaaahs were needed, and which ones needed to be longer, that is quite how (unhealthily?) into it I got!

just followed noyouhavehadawee's link (brilliant name btw!)... and I have never heard Autumn Days before.
Mind you, I didn't know paintbox until my children started school either.

All the way through this thread I was thinking of the 'I was cold I was naked' one. We used to giggle at that. I also remember one about being the lord of the dance.

I can't believe how many of these I remember.

Good thread.... daaaaaaaance lord wherever you may be, I am the lord of the dance said he .....

LOL at Sing Susannah!

What about those programmes they used to put on, you know when the TV was wheeled in! I had nightmares about Boy from Space for years and Badger Girl was odd.

For he gave me a heart
And he gave me a smile
He gave me Jesus
And he made me his child
But I just thank you Father for making me ME ME ME

What about the one where you had to shout KANGAROOSEY ROOSEY really loud, or was that just us?

Lord of the Dance!! To my utter shame, the reason I remember this song is because aged 7, I burst in to tears in the middle of assembly, while singing 'and we'll lead you all wherever he may be'!! In my defence, my dad had just walked out the night before, and my mum was sat on the benches at the side of us children - because she was a teacher - and when I looked at her, she just looked so sad :( Bastard men!!!!

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry merry king of the bush is he
Laugh Kookaburra,
Laugh Kookaburra
Gay your life must be

For some reason I'm hearing that song in a Marilyn Manson stylee Confused

my friend and I like to regale everyone at christmas with

"It was on a starry night when the hills were bright
Earth lay sleeping, sleeping calm and still.
Then in a cattle shed, in a manger bed
a boy was born, king of all the world.
And all the angels sang for him, the bells of heaven rang for him
for a boy was born, king of all the world."

Oh I LOVED Colours of Day!

Colours of day, dawn into the sky
The sun has come up
the night is behind
go down in the city, into the streets
and lets give the blessing to the people we meet
So light up the fiiiire and let the flame burn
open the door let jesus return

OMG where is this stuff coming from!? I was obviously more indoctrinated than I thought Grin

workshy - you completed my daaaaaahhhhhhs! thank you!

I danced in the morning when the world was begun
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth
At Bethlehem I had my birth....

And so on.
But my DC came home from school singing that last Easter, and were very shocked when I joined in!

I am also in the "sad at My Grandfather Clock" club.

"90 years without slumbering, tick tock, tick tock
his life seonds numbering, tick tock, tick tock"

WT very F is that for a childrens' school song? Sad

That said, I also ended up in floods of tears aged about 7 watching Dave Lee Travis' Golden Oldies at that song "We had joy,we had fun, we had seasons in the sun" Blush

We had "One more step along the world I go" as one of our wedding hymns!

What about songs sang on the coach on trips?

Oh you'll never get to heaven, on roller skates, cos you'll roll right past, those pearly gates.

Everywhere we go, people ask us, who we are, where we come from, and we always tell them, we're from [enter school here] mighty mighty [school].

I was very sad when I started teaching that the schools I've been into don't sing any of these.

Its all happy-clappy new stuff now with no mention of Jesus in case someone is offended...
