Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

yy, but being Catholic we had "Hymns Old and New"

"cross over the road my friend, ask the Lord his strength to send, his compaaaassion has no end. Cross over the road."

Haul Haul Away gives me the heebie geebies as I remember being dragged out of assembly shortly afterwards and given the bollocking of my life Grin

Walk with me oh my Lord, Bread of Heaven (Welsh), and one that went "sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"

Actually I'm surprised some of the Catholic dirges didn't give us nightmares... Smile

I remember one which I've googled for countless times and can't find anything, I'm sure I didn't dream it!

When Jesus walked in Galilee
All of the people came to see
What God intended them to be
And how they ought to live

Or something like that! Anybody else remember that or did I actually dream it?'

does anyone remember the really freaky one that went

"i was cold i was naked were you there, were you there?
i was cold, i was naked were you there?
and the creed and the colour and the name don't matter were you there?"

I don't think we ever sang hymns at my school. I vaguely remember my teacher having a guitar covered in Greenpeace stickers.

We sang stuff like Nowhere Man, Yellow Subermarine, Sloop john B and Lady Madonna. I can remember crying in assembly singing Bright Eyes just after I'd watched Watership Down for the first time!

'When I needed a neighbour, were you there, were you there?
When I needed a neighbour, were you there?'

  • And so on.

with traditional sniggering at
'I was cold, I was naked, were you there.....'
Because clearly naked was a Very Rude Word......

ASByatt I remember My Grandfather's Clock too (and I enjoyed your daaaaahhs!)

We also had a songbook in Music (not for assembly) that had "When I'm 64" and "Bright Eyes".

Was song 1 'Water of Life'?

The one I really hated was 'there's a man for all the people', and we always used to be berated for not singing 'pi-pul', according to how the notes should go.

We had a projector, they even drew pictures up the sides!

I used to love assembly! Remember all of these, one of the regulars was "he's got the whole world" Grin
