Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the paper,
with his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news

So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.

Chorus

In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man is sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea last an hour
Then he wanders home alone

Chorus

And have you seen the old man
Outside the seaman's mission
Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears.
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care

SOB!!

Ooh I love We are climbing Jesus' ladder, but it's children of the lord isn't it?

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 29/09/2011 20:49

probably Celia, im crap at knowing the real words, but always give 100% in the singing Smile

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 29/09/2011 20:51

My lil sis at primary in the mid 90s used to sing this, and I love it (traitor me?)
My friend is orange with a long, green nose
His teeth are yellow and arranged in rows
He comes from a planet where the blue grass grows
But inside he?s just like me.

So what? So what, so what?
Who cares how many eyes he?s got?
He?s my friend and I like him a lot,
So what? So what?

My friend?s orange with a big, bald head,
His feet are furry and his eyes are red,
I can?t say his name and so I call him Fred,
And inside, he?s just like me.

So what? So what, so what?
Who cares how many toes he?s got?
He?s my friend and I like him a lot,
So what? So what?

Can't believe how well i remember them all!

When Israel was in Egypt's land
Let my people go

Our sarf london school liked all the ones we could make sound like football chants.

I remember our school singing Mary had a baby and a lot of parents being shocked as they thought it was too modern and not mournful enough.

In the infants we used to sing Puff the Magic Dragon and Clementine. They still make me sadBlush

In the juniors we did an assembly about the world wars, we sang roll out the barrel, white cliffs, pack up your troubles etc. Some of the grandparents cried because it brought back so many bad memoriesSad

My school sure knew how to pick em.

If I were a fuzzy wuzzy bear ...

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 29/09/2011 20:58

Brilliant thread. Brought back so many memories, been sharing with my DD's. Here one I've not seen mentioned. I'm sure there's another verse or 5.

I had an old dog
And his name was Blue
And I betcha five dollars he's a good dog too
Singing come on Blue, you're a good dog too

Old Blue he died
And he died so hard
That he cracked the ground in my back yard
Singing come on Blue, you're a good dog too.

Strange song for 6 year olds. Could never quite work out how he cracked the ground.

UniS · 29/09/2011 21:01

I NEVER got to do the OHP. I would have brilliant at it.

I quite liked singing in assembly... #

Loved reading this thread, it's brought back so many memories. Not at all religious, but I used to love singing so many of these.

Remember the harvest festival one?

"The farmer comes to scatter the seeds, scatter the seeds, scatter the seeds
The farmer comes to scatter the seeds
O'er the fields so brown

God sends the sun God sends the rain
Over again, over again
God sends the sun, God sends the rain
O'er the fields again"

Or something like that.

CeliaFate · 29/09/2011 21:07

Cross over the road my friend
Ask the Lord his strength to lend
His compassion has no end
Cross over the road...

LynetteScavo · 29/09/2011 21:08

Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising, praising, praising
Give me joy in my heart I pray (I pray)
Give me joy in my heart keep me praising, praising, praising
Keep me praising till the break of day.

Sing Hosanah
Sing Hosanah
Sing Hosanah to the king of kings........

yellowsubmarine41 · 29/09/2011 21:12

Does anyone remember -

'The ink is black, the page is white,
Together we learn to read and write,
To read and write.
And now as last we plainly see,
The alphabet of liberty,
Liberty"

etc

Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 21:14

If I were a fuzzy wuzzy bear
I'd thank you lord for my fuzzy wuzzy hair
And if I were a billy goat
I'd thank you lord for my strong throat
And if I were a fish in the sea
I'd wiggle my tail and I'd giggle with glee
But I just thank you father for making me me.
For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus and You made me your child
So i just thank you father for making me me ...

Allboxedin · 29/09/2011 21:16

AHHHHHH! :o

pozzled · 29/09/2011 21:28

I remember so many of these! My DH now thinks I'm utterly deranged for singing them out loud.

Someone mentioned the 'bread and fishes' one, it was this:

As I went a walking
One morning in spring
I met with some travelers
On an old country lane
One was an old man
The second a maid
The third was a young boy who smiled as he said
"With the wind in the willows
The birds in the sky
There's a bright sun to warm us wherever we lie...
We have bread and fishes and a jug of red wine
To share on our journey with all of mankind."

And does anyone remember Calypso Carol?

See him lying on a bed of straw,
A draughty stable with an open door
Mary cradling the babe she bore
The Prince of Glory was his name.

Oh now carry me to Bethlehem
To see the Lord appear to men
Just as poor as was the stable then
The Prince of Glory when he came.

weevilswobble · 29/09/2011 21:29

Iliketomoveitmove. Interesting what you said about the routine feeling all safe and warm and familiar, thats actually how i feel when i go to church now. I love the hymns and have encouraged DD too, i like the insence and familiarity and the calm away from the bonkersness of life.

weevilswobble · 29/09/2011 21:30

Can our quiche be called Tequilas Assembly?

TooManyBlossoms · 29/09/2011 21:32

At half past three we go home to tea
Or maybe at quarter to 4
And 10 pairs of feet go running down the street
And in at their own front door
And it's rough and tumble, rattle and noise,
Mothers and fathers, girs and boys,
baby in the carrycot, cat by the stove,
A little bit of quarreling but lots of love

Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 21:34

I never understood why it was an issue that the green hill didn't have a city wall. Why would it? Cities have city walls, not green hills.
