Would you like to reminisce with me about school assemblies?

DH and I were talking about the 'Come and Praise' book, and singing remembering the songs.

Does anyone else remember songs such as Autumn Days and Cross over the road my friend? Which others were there?

Tequila, I'm in Grin can I play recorder in some verses and sing in others though?
Our recorder teacher was called Mrs Podmore and she was a bit weird but I am still really good at it Grin

carriedababi · 29/09/2011 20:20

streets of london,

excellent thread

BoastingByStealth · 29/09/2011 20:20

Wow his thread is fantastic!

Another for the sad Grandfather Clock Group.... and did anyone else sing

old Roger is dead, and laid in his grave,
laid in his grave, laid in his grave
old Roger is dead and laid in his grave
something something something..
They planted an apple tree over his head,
over his head, over his head,
they planted an apple tree over his head,
something something something

This also made me sad.

We ALWAYS sang this directly after "I'm a Dingle Dangle Scarecrow" coz we had to lie down and be Roger in his grave and we needed the rest after shaking our hands like this and shaking our feet like that

ScatterChasse · 29/09/2011 20:22

I'm going to paint a perfect picture,
a world of make believe,
no more hu-unger,
war or suffering,
the world I'd like to see

The stream runs clear through the meadow,
The white owl sleeps in the barns,
the brown geese fly
a group in the sky,
the yellow chick pecks the corn...

But I was at school a bit later than most of you, we just had the same hymn books!

PrideandBumperlicious · 29/09/2011 20:22

'Oh and a right Catholic weepy-wailey...

Ave Maria
Grazia Plena
Dominus
Takuum
Benedicta too

All I have I give you
Every dream and wish are yours
Mother of Christ
Mother of mine
Present them to my Lord

Rpt dodgy latin chorus...

(excuse me for the bad Latin and possible wrong words, I am now a very excommunicated lapsed Catholic!)

You are the first person in world I have come across in adulthood who knows this song. I was beginning to think I'd imagined it. I could only ever remember the first verse (yours is the second)

As I kneel before you
As I bow my head in prayer
Take this day
Make it yours
And fill me with your love.'

I went to a Catholic first school and know these!

tiredemma · 29/09/2011 20:23

Cross over the road my friend

Streets of london

Kumbayah

Shalom my friend

zinfandel · 29/09/2011 20:23

Seek ye first the kingdom of God
And His righteousness,
And all these things shall be added unto you.
Hallelu, Hallelujah....

Then lots more Hallelujahs and sung in a round by several groups...

CeliaFate · 29/09/2011 20:24

The journey of life may be easy may be hard
There'll be dangers on the way
With Christ at my side
I'll do battle as I ride
'Gainst the foes that would lead me astray

Would you ride, ride, ride with the King of Kings?
Would you follow our leader true?
Would you shout "Hosana!" to the holy son of god,
Who died for me and you?

BoastingByStealth · 29/09/2011 20:25

I was a nun in The Sound Of Music, aged 11.

I didn't bother to learn past the first line, I just lazily mouthed silently to the rest of the song....

Dixit dominus domina day-oh, sed et dextris mey-eeess.

Good eh?
26 years later :o

Tequilamockinbird · 29/09/2011 20:25

I meant come and praise meetup, not songs of praise Blush, but I suppose either is fine Grin

Yes, a quiche!

Michaelmas daisies purple in the border,
big fat leeks all standing up in order.
Whiskered barley talking to the breeze
Low hung boughs of laden apple trees

Chugging engines ready for the reeping
Pounds of chutney labled for the keeping
Giant marrows winning every prize,
Bubbling jars of elderberry wine.

Fruits are bottled, others in the deep-freeze,
Silken poppies blushing in the cornfields.
DON'T BRING MUDDY BOOTS INTO THE HALL,
Golden Onions hanging on a wall.

It's harvest time,
Harvest time again.
Harvest time,
Give thanks for sun and rain.

A time to take
and a time to give
Harvest time, it's the time to live

At harvest time.....
Mellow, fruitful harvest time.

Dreamer234 · 29/09/2011 20:27

So light up the fire, let the school burn... Grin

BoastingByStealth · 29/09/2011 20:27

Ooh, yay! A quiche, what will we call ourselves?

CeliaFate · 29/09/2011 20:29

All over the world, everywhere,
Where the sun shines,
and where the white snow gleams,
through the green green forests,
and by the streams,
hands are busy, plans are laid,
and slowly, slowly,
somewhere, somebody's house is made.
Everybody's building,Everybody's building,
Everybody's building day by day
Everybody's building, Everybody's building
Everybody's building in a special way.

Tequilamockinbird · 29/09/2011 20:30

Shalom my friend! Well done tiredemma, I'd forgotten all about that one!

Shalooooooooooom, shaloooooooooom

I'm not picking the names of the OHP monitors though, somebody else can do that. I don't want to start a bunfight on my own thread Grin

I was singing along to all of these. Such great memories.

I'm not religious at all but I loved the songs and our assemblies.

We would all walk into the hall, class by class, starting with the juniors. Everyday a different piece of classical music would be played (on the record player) as we walked in and the Headmaster would tell us what the piece was called and who the composer was.

Each week a different class would do some sort of show and tell thing, then we would have hymns. The juniors teacher played the piano and the older children would get to play their recorders as well.

I loved the routine of it all. It all felt safe, warm and familiar.

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 29/09/2011 20:32

I remember groaning in disgust if they got us to sing from the green come and praise, the blue one was the best.

ScatterChasse · 29/09/2011 20:34

Shalom, shalom,
may peace be with you
throughout your days
in all that you do
may peace be with you
shalom, sha-a-lom

Sung in rounds, getting louder and louder and faster ans faster.

The Journey of Life was our school hymn! I'm going slightly teary!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 29/09/2011 20:35

Ha ha, I had forgotten about OHP's and acetates

KinkyDorito · 29/09/2011 20:36

Autumn Days was my favourite! I wanted it at DS's christening, but the vicar had never heard of it. Come and Praise rocked!

Tequilamockinbird · 29/09/2011 20:36

We had the blue come and praise and then a green hymn book which was 'proper' hymns - the lord is my shepherd etc.

This thread has moved too fast while I've been at work, did anybody remember the clingety clang one about the bells?

Grottbags used to pull out of line every girl whose hair touched their collar and make them tie it up with elastic bands. Even me. My hair was short and layered (and bloody awful cut by dad) but I had a short neck. So I had to try and get it into 2 bunches of 2cm long hair. The old bitch.

zinfandel · 29/09/2011 20:38

Moses,I know you?re the man?
the Lord said.
?You?re going to work out my plan?
the Lord said.
?Lead all the Israelites out of slavery,
and I will make them a wandering race
called the people of God ?

So every da-ay
we?re on our wa-a-ay
for we?re a travelling, wandering race
called the people of God .

Very cheerful tune:)

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 29/09/2011 20:42

what about
"We are climbing Jesus Ladder, ladder, chilren of the world"

"The ink is black, the page is white, together we learn to read and write, to read and write"

"From the tiny ant...to the elephant....from the monkey to the chimpanzee!"

"Dance, then, wherever you may be,
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said he"

CeliaFate · 29/09/2011 20:43

"I've seen the light, I've seen the light, and that's why my heart sings, I've heard the"....What's the next bit?
I've known the joy, I've known the joy that loving Jesus brings.
