present for reception teacher/assistant - help!

Talking with other mums at school today I realised we need to give the reception teacher and assistant a christmas present. They've been great with DD, who had trouble settling.
Does anyone have any top ideas (teacher allergic to chocolate)?
Any teachers out there ever received the perfect present?

gift basket from Lush or Body Shop?
nice wine?
cinema vouchers?
I gave my midwife a really pretty mug with 'Thanks' on. Sure teacher and assistant would like to have one of those in the staffroom

WickedWinterWitch · 16/12/2005 23:40

I always buy a bottle of decent ish wine, if they don't drink they can always give it away.

Spatz · 16/12/2005 23:46

thanks - this is my first school Christmas so I have no idea what kind of thing they might like to get given that they probably get lots of stuff - I guess consumables are a good idea.

Cod reckons a bottle of bubbly goes down well with teachers....you can get 37.5cl bottles from tesco. I went with her idea and know the teachers will enjoy....better than bubble bath anyday

Mini Moet (20cl for £6.49, Sainsburys)

Lush Bath Ballistics or Bath Melts (may be tradeable if not liked!)

Bottle of wine (even if not partic liked can be taken to dinner party)

singersgirl · 17/12/2005 00:48

I gave bottles of wine to all teachers and assistants today.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 17/12/2005 05:09

I got two lovely cards the kids had made themselves and drawn flutes and everything on them. They were lovely and I will keep them.

Chocolate will probably jut be passed on because either I eat less or buy bigger pants.

As I work from home I don't need a mug - but I would like one if I worked in a school.

I also got homemade shortbread which was lovely.

santabops · 17/12/2005 08:36

always wine....

Enideepmidwinter · 17/12/2005 08:37

i always give wine

(and made it champagne for dd2s nursery staff as they have been totally amazing)

Enideepmidwinter · 17/12/2005 08:38

and the dds always make cards and write something nice they remember doing with the teacher inside

Have mini moet for teachers, but I cannot find suitable bottle bags.

Has anybody seen little bags?

SueW · 17/12/2005 09:24

Little bottle bags are available in Sainsburys stationery range in our branch. Look round near the wrapping paper and gift bags. They are a sort of pearlised pink/white. Otherwise use a cellophane and tissue. Put piece of cello on table, put tissue on top. Lay bottle diag across and wrap. FInish with ribbon/bow.

MrsMillsletoe · 17/12/2005 09:28

Thanks SueW, we have a Blue Peter afternoon lined up anyway, so could give that a go.

XmasPud · 17/12/2005 09:36

Got mine a really lovely christmas tree decoration from Accessorize for a fiver (would never spend that much on just one for my tree, ho hum...) and hung it round the neck of a mini bottle of champagne (as recommended by HRH Cod herself). Was happy to spend a little more than usual as the teacher has been just brilliant, newly qualified and full of energy and time.

When I was a teacher it used to be endless boxes of chocs, little gift packs of bubbles and soaps (yuck) with the odd querky item such as a handknitted scarf one year and a book of poems another (that was lovely as she (about 15 I think she was) wrote one of her own in the cover

Agree with malory, except the mug. You can only use so many mugs, hoiwever nice.

I actualy got some prezzies this year...I must be getting soft in my old age!

Spatz · 17/12/2005 09:59

I think the small champagne with a christmas decoration around the neck sounds perfect - thank you!

Actually - just saw the gel pens. DD loves gel pens so maybe we should give those...

I got a huge tin of biscuits for all the nursery staff and some molton brown stuff for dd's keyworker

baublerock · 17/12/2005 10:04

Why don't you just give her a nice card with a thank you message inside?

LIZS · 17/12/2005 10:37

Well we obviously got it wrong yesterday. dd's Reception class had organised a collection for the teacher and assistant, £60 M and S vouchers each, plus a large card. Fine thought I, dd sent them cards and I left it at that. Then yesterday others had separate pressies for them as well - so am now very confused and a bit embarrassed. ds' Year 3 class only do a collection at end of year so we got her some nice chocs which seemed fine, but she was deluged with small gifts !!

Shimmers · 18/12/2005 00:16

We broke up on Friday and the parents were very generous. I always feel so embarrased when I receive gifts for doing a job I love.

To give you an idea I received Debenhams vouchers, choccies and they even got my ds a little gift! So sweet.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 18/12/2005 08:42

Having given all mine a shake - they are all chocolate, except for a boy with allergies who has given me a candle he made himself. Must make it known that I like wine before next year.

Spatz · 18/12/2005 09:25

BBBBalong - the reception teacher is allergic to chocolate and known for having rather too many late nights so she is more likely to be given hangover cures than suffer your fate!

Someone gave me a plant pot you know from one of these plain to decorate yourself kits.It was so lovely and the child had worked so hard on it too.Chocolate and sweets is fine for some but as staff we tend to have tins upon tins from first week in december from staff to each other by time we break up we are sick of sweets.Places like body shop and boots also do like little cubes of minature travel stuff they are nice to receive too.
