Went to NUT meeting at school yesterday re pension reform. Cannot see myself teaching until 68 and who wants their kids taught by oldies not wanting to be there.

Teachers have already agreed to pay considerably more into their pension scheme (50% extra)

Feenie · 29/05/2011 10:59

That's called transferring, Cain. Sounds like you are pissed off with your situation, so think everyone else should suffer.

mrz · 29/05/2011 11:03

The National Audit Office has confirmed that the Teachers'' Pension Scheme is already sustainable

Of course it pisses me off, it also pisses me off that teachers want to hold the children to ransom for a pension scheme that was realistic in 2006 before the recession and now needs to be reviewed.
I think striking is selfish.
Everyone is having to make sacrifices now. Everyone. Why should teachers be exempt?

Feenie · 29/05/2011 11:20

We aren't - we've already had our pay frozen.

fivecandles · 29/05/2011 11:26

You're just not listening Cain. Teachers accept that they need to do their bit. They have had their pay frozen and are suffering terrible cuts as evident in the other thread. The pensions scheme is sustainable which you've been told over and over again.

There's also nothing selfish about striking. You lose a day's pay. You strike because you're thinking of the WHOLE profession including potential future teachers and all of the pupils present and future.

Cain · 29/05/2011 11:29

And you feel that should be enough?
I'm trying to remember when I last heard of a payrise in the private sector, I think it was probably in the last millenium.
If teachers vote to strike over this I will have nothing but contempt for the profession. And I wont be alone.

mrz · 29/05/2011 11:30

Cain it has been revised since 2006
we agreed to pay 50% more contributions we agreed to a pay freeze we agreed to work longer before we got our pensions!

Feenie · 29/05/2011 11:32

Doesn't sound as if you held us in any great esteem anyway, Cain.

Grockle · 29/05/2011 16:22

It's not just teachers who are unhappy though, is it, Cain? Lots of public sector workers (nurses, higher education lecturers etc) have protested and are willing to strike over the same issue.

Cain · 29/05/2011 18:45

Does it occur to anyone to be grateful they have a job?

mrz · 29/05/2011 18:49

How grateful would you like us to be Cain?

Grockle · 29/05/2011 18:52

I don't think anyone has said they are not grateful. I know I am lucky to have a job. And even luckier to have one that I feel is valuable & that I love.

I'm not sure what your point is, Cain. You strangely seem to be bitter and angry toward teachers. Do you feel the same about other professions?

Grockle · 29/05/2011 18:53

You seem to be strangely bitter and angry toward teachers

Cain · 29/05/2011 19:02

I'm angry yes, bitter is not an emotion I'm feeling.

As I have said, I consider it selfish to hold the children to ransom. That makes me angry.

I am getting bored of repeating myself however so unless you can give me a good reason why you should be right to disrupt children's education for this then I will be off to watch come dine with me...

Donki · 29/05/2011 19:05

Cain
I don't want to strike
I do want to support the union negotiators in this.

What do you suggest I do then?

Donki · 29/05/2011 19:05

(Still on the bloody fence)

Cain · 29/05/2011 19:13

There are other ways to protest! Ways that don't impact the children. Its half term - get yourselves down to London and make yourselves heard.
Be creative.

mrz · 29/05/2011 19:16

You really believe a one day strike is going to disrupt children's education?

Grockle · 29/05/2011 19:16

Cain, There was a protest on a Saturday in March, so we didn't impact the children's education. The pension problem will impact them as well.

Cain · 29/05/2011 19:18

As a mother of a child with adhd I know it will, what worries me is that as a teacher you think it will not!!!!!!?????

mrz · 29/05/2011 19:22

Perhaps you should mention the disruption to all the parents who take their children for a two week holiday during term time

Cain · 29/05/2011 19:23

Donki asked what I thought should be done, I have offered a suggestion, I think you should be proactive. If you want to change what is about to happen then do something, but don't expect me to support you in striking.

mrz · 29/05/2011 19:24

Will the one day strike be more or less disruption than the Royal Wedding ? or the Voting referendum?

Cain · 29/05/2011 19:25

I disagree with that too and have never taken DS out of school for non-essentials.

Still in no way justifies a strike.
