Parents rebel against school ban on junk food

I decide kid's lunchbox

Had to share this with you. My DB was telling me about this earlier - a friend of his works in the school concerned and the reason they've banned juice etc. is because there's too much room for confusion with fizzy, sunny D and other e-numbered shite. The paper version of this newspaper had a big splash about their kid's yuman right to eat crap but apparantly, no information about how their human right to be educated can be seriously affected by them eating shite. Hilarious!

PMSL at Custy's impotence inducing juice. my DD asks for 'council pop' she doesn't yet realise it is tap water.

gingerbear · 18/10/2005 11:30

At DD's nursery they have milk or water to drink, no other choice.

gingerbear · 18/10/2005 11:30

GDG, did jools also buy 'RolaCola'?

Ha ha ha!! No, we never had fizzy drinks either! Jools was strict - she didn't want fat children - honestly!!!

Enid · 18/10/2005 11:36

no kids need juice at lunchtime. Water is fine and cheap.

Tiggiwinkle · 18/10/2005 11:37

Actually bloss pure juice is not on the same nutritional level as biscuits. A 200ml carton counts as one portion of fruit in a balanced diet.

Enid · 18/10/2005 11:38

its only school lunch anyway. why not follow the rules then let them eat loads of crap when they get home if you can't bear not to give it to them?

Gobbledispook · 18/10/2005 11:40

I don't think anyone on here feeds their kids crap Enid. A carton of pure juice for their drink is not akin to sending them in with 3 chocolate bars now is it?

aloha · 18/10/2005 11:40

I hate water too. Really do have to force it down. Yuk.
Think healthy eating policies in schools are generally a Good Thing though. Though I'm not really strict at home.

Enid · 18/10/2005 11:42

no its not gbg. but its amazing how people get stressed about not being able to give juice (expensive, un-enviromentally friendly - the cartons), when water is easier all round.

I know what you are saying Enid but if you don't like water, you don't like water! I don't like it - our water has a horrible taste so if the boys don't want to drink it they don't have to!

On that note though - can you get children's sized bottles of water? You know like fruit shoot bottles but with water in? And what about flavoured water or is that a no-no too? If I could get little bottles that appeal to kids that were maybe a bit flavoured that might be an alternative for some days of the week.

Bozza · 18/10/2005 12:00

I don't get the problem for those of you who live in areas where you don't like the tap water. You can buy bottled water just as cheaply as juice. Asda's Smartprice water is about 18p for 2 litres. Even watered down juice is going to come in at the same price I would have thought.

I buy the Smartprice water for DH because he is fussy, but the rest of us have tap water.

The reason (and I partially regret it) that I got into giving DS watered down juice was that when he went onto solids and I started giving formula during the day he wouldn't drink water and got very constipated. I also regret not phasing it back out again which is what my sister has done with my nephew.

aloha · 18/10/2005 12:02

I dislike ALL water! I don't mind San Pellegrino fizzy water that tastes of salt, but find the rest of it very, very hard to drink.

lol peachyclair, I hate them!

I just don't see what is the problem with some bad things, in moderation.

Ie, I think my dd eats very well and am generally proud of myself as I cook a for us every night despite it just being me and her. She has cereal for breakfast and sandwiches/baked potatoes or similar for lunch.

But yes she will sometimes drink juice, or have some cake/crisps. As will I.

Also my teeth are excellent to GDS, but don't have qualifications coming out of my ears , but have a few!

weesaidie · 18/10/2005 12:04

I also don't like water but do try to drink it. Sometimes.

I drink lots of tea! It's all liquid.

Gobbledispook · 18/10/2005 12:07

I drink lots of wine - does that count? It kinda looks like water.

hunkerpumpkin · 18/10/2005 12:08

Flavoured water often has aspartame or other artificial sweeteners in it. Or sugar.

aloha · 18/10/2005 12:08

Oh yes, wine too
Marvellous for the complexion. Look at the Queen Mother!

aloha · 18/10/2005 12:09

I could send ds to school with a half bottle of claret!
