Ds (6) came home today with a good-sized cuddly tiger in his bookbag. On questioning, he informed me that this is Tigger, who Miss X found abandoned in a classroom cupboard. Every Friday Tigger whispers into Miss X's ear the name of the child he wants to stay with that weekend (usually someone who has made a particular effort).
So far so cute. But the real genius of the idea, as I realised when we got home, is that Tigger brings his own diary (exercise book covered in Tiger-striped wrapping paper) in which he writes an account (from Tigger's point of view) of what he did over the weekend. On Monday morning the child then gets to read out what Tigger wrote in the diary about the weekend's activities. Clearly some previous entries had been ghost-written by parents, but some were amazing efforts by just-writing Y2 children. How great is that as an inspired teaching idea?
Ds tucked up asleep with Tigger atm, and as luck would have it, we've planned a trip to the zoo tomorrow, and Tigger is coming to meet his cousins.
