Is this not fantastic? An "I love my child's teacher" thread

Ds (6) came home today with a good-sized cuddly tiger in his bookbag. On questioning, he informed me that this is Tigger, who Miss X found abandoned in a classroom cupboard. Every Friday Tigger whispers into Miss X's ear the name of the child he wants to stay with that weekend (usually someone who has made a particular effort).

So far so cute. But the real genius of the idea, as I realised when we got home, is that Tigger brings his own diary (exercise book covered in Tiger-striped wrapping paper) in which he writes an account (from Tigger's point of view) of what he did over the weekend. On Monday morning the child then gets to read out what Tigger wrote in the diary about the weekend's activities. Clearly some previous entries had been ghost-written by parents, but some were amazing efforts by just-writing Y2 children. How great is that as an inspired teaching idea?

Ds tucked up asleep with Tigger atm, and as luck would have it, we've planned a trip to the zoo tomorrow, and Tigger is coming to meet his cousins.

How lovely! Some teachers are really incredible, aren't they?

You'll have to tell us what Tigger does this weekend - from the point of view of DS, obv

startingtobehalloweenylover · 07/10/2005 22:18

awww bless

KristinaM · 07/10/2005 22:21

that is great. unless you are planning to have your kids watch Tv all weekend while you do DIY or housework. then you need to do interesting and educational things instead......

Hulababy · 07/10/2005 22:25

Th$at's great Glad your DS is enjoying his special weekend with Tigger.

princesspeahead · 07/10/2005 22:27

we have that! but her name is jessica teddy and she is a lovely shade of violet. and very fluffy.

her diary is full of photos as well, of what she did on the weekend... so sweet. lots of photos of children beaming with jessica teddy at pizza express etc etc

soapbox · 07/10/2005 22:28

Us too - Barnaby bear

He is worryingly well travelled!

roisin · 07/10/2005 22:31

Oh that's lovely frogs. I hope your ds is inspired and motivated by Tigger this weekend.

KristinaM · 07/10/2005 22:33

You could always do the anti-competitive parent thing . You know, make cakes with Tigger, or let him polish the family shoes, or look for bugs in the garden. As an antidote to " I flew to Paris for the weekend and toured the Louvre"

LadyTophamHatt · 07/10/2005 22:33

We have a very over hugged Barnaby bear.
Ds1 brought him home last year and we took him to Gloucester as we were about to move there. Barnaby's diary entry tells everyone about the new house(including a photo) and the forset close by.
Some of the enters were from 2000 so Barnaby is a well travelled bear.

LadyTophamHatt · 07/10/2005 22:34

Soapbox.....I wonder if it's the same Barnaby?

KristinaM · 07/10/2005 22:36

" I went to gloucester" is nearly as exciting

soapbox · 07/10/2005 22:37

School name begins with C?????

tamum · 07/10/2005 22:38

This was the bane of my life, I have to admit. Dd did it at nursery, and both dd and ds at school at different times (mainly a bear, sometimes a cuddly dog IIRC). Every time I decided to have a lazy evening and give them pizza the blooming teddy would come home and teddy's diary would sound as though I was the only mother in the class who didn't cook elaborate healthy meals every night and spend the afternoon doing imaginative craft activities with them

It is a nice thing to do in the end though, it's great reading all the entries.

roisin · 07/10/2005 22:41

ROFL at tamum!

KristinaM · 07/10/2005 22:43

tamum - you are the only mother in the class who doesn't cook elaborate healthy meals every night and spend the afternoon doing imaginative craft activities with them

LadyTophamHatt · 07/10/2005 22:44

not the same then, our is a B.

Barnaby not exactly original I suppose.

tamum · 07/10/2005 22:44

Damn, I was hoping no-one would suss me out

(Roisin, spectacular change of subject but have you seen that Lego are doing chess sets? Just seemed like something that might appeal to your ds1!)

frogs · 07/10/2005 22:44

Luckily we'd already planned a trip to the zoo. And dh is home from exotic foreign parts on Sunday, hopefully with a decent crop of exotic pressies for all. So Tigger should have plenty to write about. Makes a change from: "Ds squabbled with his sisters. Played scalextric. Squabbled with sisters again. Moaned about wanting to watch TV. Mummy read the newspaper and said 'Fergodsake-can-I-not-have-30-seconds-peace-and-quiet-and-tidy-up-that-godawful-fleapit-of-a-bedroom'.

Actually it's all a teacherly conspiracy to spy on child's wholly inadequate home life. But she is fab. And he gets homework every week, interesting and at an appropriate level. And it gets returned. Marked! With constructive comments!!

I have seen them Tamum. DS1 was wittering about something in the Lego catalogue this evening, but I must admit I wasn't listening! I don't think it was the chess though.

Frogs - I'm delighted to hear about this teacher. Will she teach him for the whole year?

hub2dee · 07/10/2005 22:51

mummy sat on computer doing mummysnet all day long but then dh told her off for snurking at norks. I had a great weekend but wish I had been given a meal or too but mummy was two busy parping with her friends.

awwww....

soapbox · 07/10/2005 22:54

hub2dee · 07/10/2005 22:57

Sorry. Just killing time waiting for dd to wake up for a late night feed so I can get some bl**dy kip.

frogs · 07/10/2005 23:01

I was called in once by embarrassed looking teacher - dd had promised I would take Barnaby to Barcelona. I was going without kids with dh on a business trip!. Duly took him to Miro museum, bought him a sombrero, and imagine head's surprise when she was emailed pic of said bear on La Ramblas. Class 2's bear is so well travelled, but usually with kids!!
