Ds (6) came home today with a good-sized cuddly tiger in his bookbag. On questioning, he informed me that this is Tigger, who Miss X found abandoned in a classroom cupboard. Every Friday Tigger whispers into Miss X's ear the name of the child he wants to stay with that weekend (usually someone who has made a particular effort).

So far so cute. But the real genius of the idea, as I realised when we got home, is that Tigger brings his own diary (exercise book covered in Tiger-striped wrapping paper) in which he writes an account (from Tigger's point of view) of what he did over the weekend. On Monday morning the child then gets to read out what Tigger wrote in the diary about the weekend's activities. Clearly some previous entries had been ghost-written by parents, but some were amazing efforts by just-writing Y2 children. How great is that as an inspired teaching idea?

Ds tucked up asleep with Tigger atm, and as luck would have it, we've planned a trip to the zoo tomorrow, and Tigger is coming to meet his cousins.

We had Barnaby Bear last year. Tigger sounds dead cute, frogs.

We got Billy Bear last weekend. I think the teacher was particularly tactful as ds had been telling everyone that we were going to Hogwarts that weekend. In fact we were going to a collage reunion where they filmed Hogwarts. So Billy got his picture taken on the quad and sitting in the Hall!

Great fun

BTW my dss teacher is wonderful as well. ds is having lots of probelms with reading and writing. Will her considerable effor he is now making some real progress (none at all last year). On top of this he gets loads of stckers, 'superstar of the day' and merit certificates (three this term!). She is so positive with him, it is a delight to see.....oh and she got him extra help within 2 weeks of term.

A few teachers friends take their school bears on holidays and have pics just for the staff room. Ie the bear drinking cocktails etc.

Well I think it is nice, cod

You will get differences between the kids in terms of their ability as well, does that mean that you can't put their pictures up because some look crap. Ds's are always the worst, does that mean it should be 'no pictures incase it worries the berries ds'? No they put them up and praise his, just like the good ones!

You just value whatever Billy bear does instead? Doesn't matter where he goes, just that the kids get to feel special?

Our playgroup had a bear who had his own disposable camera as well so there was an album of all his adventures for the children to look at. The parents would take extra pics after the kids were in bed (we had a pub so he was enjoying a pint at the bar and having a go at the karaoke)and the bear ended up with his own slightly 'naughty' album that the children never knew about! As far as they were concerned he spent his time visiting the beach or horseriding etc but really he had a secret life!

dd2's reception class have Giorgio the Panda and the other reception class have Penny the Penguin. These come home to a family every night and has so far come home on ballet night Twice! dd2 dictates what she wants us to write and as her friend didn't make it to ballet last time I'm sure her friend was puzzled to hear of all the games they played during their sisters classes .

This bear was a pain three years ago when dd1 was in the class as she tried so hard to "earn" Giorgio and felt she never got him . She also didn't think much of the reasons given for the others to get Giorgio. The teacher said she kept a list and made sure he was spread out evenly but thinking back I agree with dd1 she didn't seem to get him that much. I must admit I felt this bear was not promoting the harmony needed in the class room. I will have to see how this year goes, especially with dd2's stories

DS' school has this too. DS' class has Pippa the Pukeko (pronounced POOKECKO ... native NZ black and blue and red water bird. Looks a bit like a very large coot)
At the top of the page it always has a reason for Pippa coming home ... Like "Angela got Pippa for doing such lovely writing" and "Ben got Pippa for counting so well" and "Jordan got Pippa for having such lovely manners"
DS got it at the end of last term ... I think the teacher must have been tired and had run out of ideas because it said "Ghosty Jnr got Pippa because he has waited and waited and waited for his turn"

I've just seen ad advert for a nightschool class of 10 weeks to learn how to make these! Why does it take 10 weeks to learn how to put a teddy and a book in a bag?
