we are relocating to Scotland sometime in the new year due to my husbands job moving to Erskine near Glasgow. I was hoping some of you mums out there could advise us on the best areas to live and for schools for our 5 and 8 year old. I come from Durham and have never lived anywhere else, so i am very nervous to say the least and any advice will be very welcome. Ideally no more than 30 Min's drive from Glasgow would be good.
many thanks for reading

Thanks so much .

Great to hear that Kilmacolm primary recommended by a teacher who knows it .

Our lives have been just So Unsettled the last 5 years . Ive lost track of how many homes weve lived in over that period .

Therefore feeling very daunted by a move that may be permanent ....

Plus Ive always been quite anti private schools .

Just think its such a pity for the kilmacomics that they cant go to Gryffe ....

MIGHT Consider sending our son to St Columbas ..... BUT

Weve only one child now . I sure couldnt afford to send 2 there.

Cant believe Im describing my life on here.

mankyscotslass - Temple primary shut down!! It always seemed like such a nice wee school. Knightswood Primary moved to Knightscliffe Rd, right next to Temple.

Spiderbabymum, there are loads of nice places round Glasgow. Honestly, the commute across the bridge is not far and there's lots of affordable, attractive housing. I hope this move sees you settle happily :)

darleneconnor · 10/11/2010 11:17

Euphemia- If his job is in erskine he will be going in the opposite direction from most of the other traffic so i dont think the commute would be so bad

lancaster · 10/11/2010 11:40

HI. Can I suggest going north west of the river to cardross or helensburgh. Drive to erskine would be around 20 mins and easy commute to glasgow also with an excellent train service. It would probably be a bit quiet for me personally (I live in Broomhill), and a bit close to my in-laws! but they both have a nice community feel and might suit you quite well.

prettybird · 10/11/2010 12:22

I agree with darleneconnor. I occasionally had to go to Erskine from the centre of Glasgow in my last job and it was always very quick.

Coming back, you do need to learn the short cuts to avoid the queue that backs-up from the Kingston Bridge - but there are various alternatives that work well. :)

another vote for bishopton. i went to bishopton primary and my daughter is in p1. i left and lived in hillhead for nearly 20 years but returned when i was pregnant. just wanted my child to have a similar childhood to mine. mind you i hated bish when i was a teenager!
on rightmove its pa7 for bish, pa8 for erskine, pa11 for bridge of weir, 13 kilmalcolm, 6 for houston

Hi
I am shifting to glasgow this month can anyone of you explain to me about education system there. I have twin boys of 3.2 yrs old. I am looking for some gud places to rent with gud nursery schools nearby.

KatoPotato · 17/01/2015 00:50

Have a look at Dumbarton, some really lovely parts and just over the bridge.

Pepperpot69 · 18/01/2015 09:01

Look through the early parts of this thread and there are some good explanations and advice.

prettybird · 19/01/2015 09:20

Semba - are you already in Scotland, so know when your twins will be starting school?

If not, you need to know that the age cut offs are different up here and gave more flexibility.
