relocating to glasgow need help with areas

we are relocating to Scotland sometime in the new year due to my husbands job moving to Erskine near Glasgow. I was hoping some of you mums out there could advise us on the best areas to live and for schools for our 5 and 8 year old. I come from Durham and have never lived anywhere else, so i am very nervous to say the least and any advice will be very welcome. Ideally no more than 30 Min's drive from Glasgow would be good.
many thanks for reading

cannot seem to find any houses for sale in houston, bridge of weir or old kilpatrick, going to look for the others now.

The only thing you really want to avoid commuting wise is the Kingston Bridge in rush hour. You also have Paisley close by which will be cheaper for housing. Best schools are in East Renfrewshire.

mankyscotslass · 06/11/2010 14:13

Be careful looking at paisley, there are definetely areas to avoid!

Ferguslie, some areas round Thrushcraigs and others are dodgy.

There are some nice houses near Barshaw Park, but out of your budget I think.

seb1 · 06/11/2010 14:13

Here are some renfrewshire ones

seb1 · 06/11/2010 14:15

and some East Renfrewshire

dogmadmum · 06/11/2010 14:15

Gee darleneconnor thanks for that, well i dont know if this is bad of me but i dont really mind if my children dont go to the best school as long as it is a good school and they are happy there. I am a protective parent and would prefer a school where the children and parents have good strong morals.

and Some more

expatinscotland · 06/11/2010 14:17

I know someone who lives in Nielston.

Can't say I'd want to live there myself, though.

seb1 · 06/11/2010 14:18

Scottish school reports here HMIE and some General School Info HTH

mankyscotslass · 06/11/2010 14:20

There seem to be a few properties in Erskine around your budget too, but they are 3 bedrooms mostly semis in the x housing association stock, so not full of character, though the will be solid!

mankyscotslass · 06/11/2010 14:22

And I agree with Expat about Neilston. [

expatinscotland · 06/11/2010 14:26

You just have to be careful about where you go sometimes if you don't have a very large budget.

Hopefully, MN will be able to make sure you don't wind up in one of those areas.

dogmadmum · 06/11/2010 14:31

wow i have saved all the links everyone has showed me and boy have i got some homework to do. I knew this wasnt going to be easy but i am now totally confused lol most definitely dont want to live anywhere remotely dodgy, so i am now making a list of areas of good and bad.
can i ask each of you to name your top 5 places that you would consider living within 30 min drive from ErskineGrin
thanx

Sorry, have only skipped through the posts. Glasgow is near to Erskine and on a good day with no traffic you could get to the centre of Glasgow in under half an hour. However, in peak times it could be more like an hour and a half!

May have missed it but do you drive?

I would suggest asking your husband his maximum commute from Erskine and take it from there. Then factor in property prices and then look at schools.

Roughly speaking, anything to the West of Erskine, either side of the River is fairly rural and you probably would need a car. To the East is generally more urban and you could possibly rely on public transport.

For your husband's commute, bear in mind that some of the more rural roads to the West can get congested and traffic is reduced to a crawl ans some can be treacherous in the winter.

I would agree that Bishopton is lovely and has a real community feel but not sure about the house prices.

Sorry for the essay, hope it helps and let me know if I can help with anything else.

mankyscotslass · 06/11/2010 14:56

Just 5 of many

Bishopton

Lochwinnoch

Kilmacolm

Bridge of Weir

Bearsden

Milngavie

mankyscotslass · 06/11/2010 14:57

OOps, i can't count! But looking at these places there is not a lot at all for your budget.

dogmadmum · 06/11/2010 14:58

Hi PTA yes i do drive and have my own car, although i wont drive in the snow as im very nervous. DH said he would prefer no more than a 30 min drive to work in erskine, which does give us a fair range.
