Parents "sneaking" pop into water bottles - opinions please?

DS has just started reception and they have a policy that all the children are allowed to take in a bottle of water which are kept on a tray and they are allowed to help themselves as and when. Think this sort of idea is becoming pretty common. So I went out and bought DS a nice new Star Wars bottle to take it in and he was quite happy.

However loads of the parents are complaining and saying their kids won't drink water. Some of them have started sending in flavoured water and ribena. One even sent diet coke. I'm a bit peeved about this because DS knows they are only allowed water but that some of the others are taking these things. I know its only a small thing but I do think it is giving the kids the message that its OK to undermine the teacher and I think that its the start of the discipline problems that afflict lots of schools - the sort of thing that HMB describes very eloquently. What do you think?

children like rules

unicorn · 15/09/2005 12:09

I agree, but I also believe that rules should make sense.
I want my children to understand the rules, not just blithely accept them.. 'because them there are the rules'!

Gobbledigook · 15/09/2005 12:09

The mind is boggling at some of the links made with putting a dash of juice in water - parents unhappy at school, future disrespect for authority...

I'm getting the point and I've accepted it but I think these are rather giant leaps some of you are making.

Twiglett · 15/09/2005 12:10

oh gawd

whereas I want my children to do what they're bloody well told and not act like little prince and princesses

but rules can change Cod..and some rules (like not picking up reception kids from the classroom at hometime)should be changed (and have been in our school's case)

Not all rules are right.

Gobbledigook · 15/09/2005 12:14

Oh has it

So funny this thread - if I hadn't put a bit of juice in ds1's water I'd be on the other side baying for the blood of those norty parents

I quite agree about the rules.

Still hate water though. VIle.

Hey, I hope you are all liking the way I've been 'convinced' on this thread (didn't take much though.

Don't you find that rarely happens - most people just stick to their original argument and fight it to the end.

I'm great i am.

Twiglett · 15/09/2005 12:22

yeah, you're great you am

swedishmum · 15/09/2005 12:23

If you've ever been in a hot classroom and seen how the children use their drinks bottles, you'll know that they are in and out of their mouths all the time. Any juice in there would be bad for them. If you're told you can take water, you take water. There is a reason for the rule.

When I did my Oxbridge entrance many years ago at a local college, one guy asked if he was allowed to smoke! See where it can lead...

Well, not all kids are that simple: DS1 with AS ended up as a A&E emergency because he DID refuse to drink anything else, and DID go without on a hot day. It was only when we gave in and offered ribena he did drink something.

BigBumpBonnie · 15/09/2005 12:49

don't usually get into arguements but I can't see a problem with watered down fruit juice (not squash or coke etc). I think it's up to the parent what they give their child to drink.
