Parents "sneaking" pop into water bottles - opinions please?

DS has just started reception and they have a policy that all the children are allowed to take in a bottle of water which are kept on a tray and they are allowed to help themselves as and when. Think this sort of idea is becoming pretty common. So I went out and bought DS a nice new Star Wars bottle to take it in and he was quite happy.

However loads of the parents are complaining and saying their kids won't drink water. Some of them have started sending in flavoured water and ribena. One even sent diet coke. I'm a bit peeved about this because DS knows they are only allowed water but that some of the others are taking these things. I know its only a small thing but I do think it is giving the kids the message that its OK to undermine the teacher and I think that its the start of the discipline problems that afflict lots of schools - the sort of thing that HMB describes very eloquently. What do you think?

hope you gave them bread with that?

bobbybob · 15/09/2005 16:40

No - I let them eat cake!

At ds's nursery they only give water, no exceptions, and they do all drink it.

Ulysees · 15/09/2005 16:42

I know you did bobby, I meant to put a next to that comment

hunkermunker · 15/09/2005 16:46

Water and peanuts at nursery, BB? How's that going?

Oh fgs! I haven't read the thread (but has it kicked off? lots of posts!) but I think the school should put a stop to it. Kids need water not water with sugar and e numbers added. Of course they will drink water if that's all there is!

WideWebWitch · 15/09/2005 20:43

Have skimmed and agree with cod and Twig.

Ulysees · 15/09/2005 20:43

Mosschops, what angers me is our school is v strict re:water not even flavoured but then the kids come out eating sweets from the teachers, WTF???

Blimey, Its taken me 1/2 and hour to read this thread and now I can't be bothered to type anything

Water is the expected drink for the kids to take in at my girls schools and thats fine by me. What a load of cobblers from the rest of you

roisin · 15/09/2005 21:05

DS1 always refused to drink water at home, even when he was very thirsty
But he learned to drink it at school, and now drinks it at home too.

DS2 also drinks milk at school, which he refuses at home!

Jimjams · 15/09/2005 21:07

goosey - I was a bit worried reding your message (he'll drink water )

socci- um does this answer your question about ms vs special? You won't believe the hassle I had regarding the bloody fruit rule in m/s. Now they're just happy when he eats (big bowl of chips today) - (although I asked the to stick to water except for1 carton of juice). There are lots of rules of this ilk in m/s- which don't really feature in special.

Ha ha this thread has made me laugh! The bits I've managed read anyway. DD1's school don't do water bottles during the day, but there is a water fountain. For break they can bring what they want, but at luch time it's tap water supplied by the school only they don't allow even bottles of mineral water. Even those on packed lunches don't bring a drink, can't even get away with yoghurt drink, got to be in a pot with a spoon. PMSL at the outrage this caused when it was introduced. Parents insisting on the water being checked for safety by the water board, contacting the island health safety officer and insisting on more tests...school stuck to their guns though. One parent even insisted on buying the school a water filter cause their little precious didn't like the taste of the water! Mad or what

Jimjams · 15/09/2005 21:15

PMSL pf!

mumfor1sttime · 15/09/2005 21:28

Passionflower that is mad! There are many children in the world who dont have access to safe drinking water- people in this country are so stupid sometimes!
I have once over heard a mum say 'I feel cruel giving her plain water' - how ridiculous!

nzshar · 15/09/2005 21:29

OMG ok this is a very funny thread

my ds is only 15 months will only have watered down juice with me BUT he knows how to push ALL my buttons have tried and tried the water route...yeah yeah im a pushover

When he goes to school and if they have a water only policy then water he will have. Its better for him and damnit he WILL learn to respect them ....even if he dosent respect me LOL

Passionflower · 15/09/2005 21:37

I'm like Issymum, choose school pay for it and let em get on with it!

After all the hoo ha school did say if you don't like the rules you can take them home for lunch..funnily enough no one cared enough about it to collect their kids and feed them themselves.

School gives excellent entertainment value

goosey · 16/09/2005 10:22

lol Jimjams I know he will. One will only drink apple squash but loves flooding my kitchen by turning the tap of the water dispenser on and off to watch the drips - which the dog then licks up

Jimjams · 16/09/2005 11:59

od god don't show him the water dispenser he'll be fascinated ;o And if he gets a spec of water on him he'll be stripping off

pixel · 16/09/2005 14:11

I haven't managed to read all this thread yet but I did have to laugh. I was annoyed at ds's nursery and school both giving him squash when he is perfectly happy with water! I can't believe there are people who object to their children being encouraged to drink water.

Anyway, will go back and read rest of thread now.

Gobbledigook · 16/09/2005 14:13

Just to update you all, ds1 has gone in with water in his bottle today!! Will let you know if I get a response at picking up time!

I also found out yesterday from another mum that there is apparently a 'drink sink' where they can help themselves to water whenever they like. Ds1 didn't tell me this!

hunkermunker · 17/09/2005 11:17

Well, GDG? Did he drink it?

edam · 17/09/2005 11:37

As long as they don't bring back free school milk and force them to drink it..,, at memories of being forced to drink milk that had sat in the sun all morning with cream congealing on top.
