Best private schools in Cornwall & Devon?

Hi there

My husband and I are considering moving to the north coast of cornwall and need to get to grips with the private schools in the area. Can anyone help? We've got three little girls (6 to 1yrs old) and would ideally like them to go to co-ed schools, with the flexibility to board or day (well I'm hoping they go day whilst at prep school!) It's hard to find out which ones are reckoned to be the best... Thanks in advance for any help/ opinions! :)

Amy

PS been to see Mount Keply and loved it, but not ready to board full time yet.

How old are your DC UpAtNight? Mount Kelly seems to be settling down under the new head, who is apparently well thought of.

St Josephs in Launceston is small and only goes to GCSE, with no room to add a sixth form, but I know people who are very happy with it.

Eldest is 8 - looking for a prep school only at the moment, they will move at either 11 or 13. Thanks.

Truro High is girls only (old girl) but apparently still good for an academic child. St Joseph's is well liked. Beyond that, I confess ignorance!

I know I am six years late in adding my bit, but people like me might be looking at this old thread wondering about private schools in Cornwall. Well done to Airiesgirl sticking up for Truro school and also Truromum. I do feel that those who constantly look for others' approval in the form of reputation outside Cornwall seem to be indicating that it can't be any good because no-one outside Cornwall has heard of it. So, I would say, what? So what if no-one outside Cornwall has heard of it. Frankly who cares? I would base my judgement on the sound advice of someone whose child attends a school, someone who knows first hand what a school is like, not on the judgements of people whose children do not attend the school and who are so tied up in making choices based upon a strange anxiety that faceless others would not approve. I think snobbery is a weakness.

Zombie thread but I bet opinion would differ these days. I know lots of the Truro school teachers and pupils and it's a brilliant school and churns out healthy, polite, well rounded kids from everything I've seen.

Truro high is dying a death and was about to go co Ed last year despite their "girls first" strapline. Think they've actually been bought out by Truro school now anyway.

I wouldn't bother with prep round here - the primary schools are largely excellent.

Truro school is, and has always been superb. DOI. Ex pupil

I think your information is very out of date. Truro High is NOT going co-ed and is an incredibly successful school just for girls. Like Truro School is is a part of the Methodist Independent Schools Group but the two schools remain totally independent of each other. Truro High is the top school in Cornwall with the best results at A Level and GCSE last year. It is also in the Top 1% of schools in England for adding value at A Level.

Be warned. Some people are VERY misinformed! Truro School is an excellent choice for secondary education, with sound academic results and significant sporting, musical and dramatic facilities. By some margin it's the largest independent school in Cornwall.

Hello,
Sorry if this has been asked before, I cannot find any recent posts about it.
Which independent schools would you recommend in Devon? For both girls and boys. Possibly in the Exeter/Mid-Devon area.
Thanks!

Prep or senior? Can't help for Exeter/mid-Devon I'm afraid - but if South Somerset isn't too far for you, check out Perrott Hill. Fab prep school - various reviews up on their website. Worth checking out if the area is doable for you. Good luck!

Sorry, if you want independent in Exeter, start by looking at Exeter School. Co-ed, from reception to A level and excellent results all through. It is quite academic though. Maynard is good too, but purely for girls. I don't know much about St Wilfred's.

"50% of the A level grades were A* or A grades" is not very good at all.
The worst school in Surrey achieves 55%. Since A & O were dumbed down by Blair (could have been any party) standards at school are low.
Even average schools get over 79% A* grades.
Truro (Boys) is a nightmare of pretentious rugby playing dumbos who typically end up stuck in Cornwall for the rest of their working life but I am not going to embellish what that means here.
A couple of hand picked gems but most schools here are deprived and show it. As a general employer, 40% of local candidates are illiterate; its no surprise that there is little successful industry in Cornwall & Devon.

Hi I am thinking of sending my sons to Truro School and Prep as we are moving to Cornwall. Does anyone have any comments about how the school is now in 2019? I am looking for good all round education, my kids need access to the arts in particular as they are musical and love the arts in general. My eldest has dyslexia so extra support with this would be necessary too.

@gingerhoney "Even average schools get over 79% A grades" I think you might be confused. I just googled the gov. stats and the national figure is 7.7% A and 25.2% A*/A grades for 2019. There is also no 'boys' school in Truro.

@Traveller1 Welcome to Cornwall :) Truro School (the main one - for Girls and Boys) has a great reputation at both the Prep and Senior levels. It's well worth taking a look around if you can and chatting with the learning support team (which is great by the way) - the art and music departments are wonderful too. Can you tell I'm a current parent and a big fan :)
