How often do your kids get new coats?

I know a frivolous question. My DCs last year coat still fits her, however I'm bored of it but feel guilty a little to get a new one. Perhaps if I get it this year she still could wear it next year. She has a few coats for different weather, but this one is school coat she wears daily. How often do your dc get a new school coat?

Youngest? Maybe never? Eldest (16) has the coat he got at 14. Just one coat per child.

Theunamedcat · 02/02/2024 20:41

Not often ds1 hates coats (will only wear a hoody) and all his primary school coats are handed down to ds2 I feel a bit guilty ds2 rarely has a "new" coat but he isnt fussed tbh

ditalini · 02/02/2024 20:43

Only when they grow out of them / they're not fit for wearing any more.

You could get her a secondhand one if you're just bored of it and fancy a change without adding to the clothes mountain.

Xmasbaby11 · 02/02/2024 20:45

New winter coat every 2 years.

then a waterproof, a fleece, denim jacket and numerous hoodies- all last a couple of years max apart from hoodies which get destroyed within a year.

dd are 10 and 12.

WashableVelvet · 02/02/2024 20:47

When outgrown. They have 2-3 each for different weathers. I mostly buy on vinted.

SleepingStandingUp · 02/02/2024 20:53

When they need it. DS had one recently because he needed a thicker coat. Twins, one tends to inherit DSs coat and one gets a new one, currently yearly cos they're of an age of growing fast

Snowdropsarecoming · 02/02/2024 20:54

When they out grow them.

IDontWantToBeAPieIDontLikeGravy · 02/02/2024 20:57

Every year or every other year depending on if they still fit into the one from last year (age 4&6, but very different preferences so handing down isn’t an option).
They have one winter coat each, and one lighter weight showerproof jacket for spring summer.
The old coats get passed on to friends kids or the charity shop if they’re still wearable.

Busy75 · 02/02/2024 20:58

When they’ve grown out of the current one. Our two youngest DC have 3/4 jackets each for the different seasons. They are tall for their ages, constantly growing fast, both heavily involved in outdoor sports, so they also need a waterproof jacket, thick fleece jacket, additional thick hoodies, etc.

I tend to buy our DC coats in bigger sizes in advance, if they’re on sale, as I get satisfaction knowing I’ve saved us money.

As an adult, I don’t automatically buy myself a new coat every year just because either, as it’s unnecessary and wasteful. I have a collection of various coats and jackets that I rotate throughout the year. They eventually get passed onto to the charity shops. Though since last year, we’ve decided to re-sell the quality/good clothing items and hardly worn footwear online.

Pass down clothing to younger siblings, friends and family if you can.

Likeagoodday · 02/02/2024 20:59

When they can’t squeeze into them anymore? One very warm coat and a lighter rain coat per child. Plus one child rides horses so has different coats for that as no hoods allowed.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 02/02/2024 21:01

My 4.5yr old still fits his 18-24m coat!

SpinningTops · 02/02/2024 21:14

Oh blimey. My daughter wore a coat from 2-5 then it passed to my son who wore it from 2 and he's now 5 and I think it will do next year too. So that's 7 years from one (very good quality!) coat. Good thing I love it!!

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 02/02/2024 21:19

One winter and one summer, worn till it doesn't fit, then passed down and then charity shop/recycling.
Ds1 (19) clearly intends to keep wearing his current two coats until they fall apart. Dd (21) on the other hand, appears to own more coats than I've owned in my entire life and uses Vinted like a library.

PuttingDownRoots · 02/02/2024 21:20

When they need one.
DD2 currently prefers a coat bought for DD1 4.5years ago. She has a newer one that is 18 months old... but thats a lot thicker and "too warm" apparently. Dds are 10&12.

TwylaSands · 02/02/2024 21:21

When they need one.

WolfFoxHare · 02/02/2024 21:24

DS has a couple of coats and a light waterproof, we usually try to make them last two years if we can. But we stagger the purchases - so his big waterproof warm school coat is on its second year but the lighter jacket was new this autumn, and the waterproof is around 8 months old.

Sleepproblems · 02/02/2024 21:26

Every year surely, as they grow!

sciencemama · 02/02/2024 21:30

My dc have had their school coats for 2years. They both have two other coats which have lasted maybe 18m so far

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/02/2024 21:41

When they've grown out of the old one. Every year or two.

BertieBotts · 03/02/2024 11:00

When it's too small or worn out (e.g. if I get it second hand)

A coat is a functional item to me so being bored of it seems irrelevant - it's a coat, how exciting can it be? If I see a new coat that I really like then I'll buy a couple of sizes up, to grow into.

Caspianberg · 03/02/2024 11:06

When he outgrows it.

We run on about 3-4 coats. Winter (thick snow/ ski thing), thinner autumn spring, rain coat, and wind proof fleece. He has to have the winter, rain and fleece for kindergarten here . And the thinner one is recent as too hot sometimes in other.

But I aim for at least 2 year out of it. If Ds doesn’t have a huge growth spurt, I think we will get 3 years out of the winter one already as it’s still spacious. I don’t really get bored of coats. Buy fairly neutral in the hope they will last long and go with most things. My own coats are 5-20 years old, I only replace when damaged as not growing like a child.

Meadowfinch · 03/02/2024 11:09

Until it doesn't fit.

This year ds is 15 and he's got a ski jacket for when it's seriously cold, and a black padded jacket that he puts over his school blazer.

Caterina99 · 03/02/2024 11:19

I kind of stagger them as DS seems to get so revolting (live in the country and he actually completely fell in a muddy stream the other day for example) that he needs 2 proper coats so that he has a spare for when one is being washed. So he has one that’s a bit too big and one that’s getting a bit too small. Also has a fleece and a light rain coat that I suppose he could wear together too.

DD gets his hand me downs (if they’re wearable) plus some of her own stuff, so I buy her less of those kind of things.

shellshapes · 03/02/2024 11:24

At the moment, every season as my eldest is 4 and my youngest was born the opposite season to get so the sizes and weathers don't quite match up.
I get them all from Vinted though
