Nappies leaking constantly

Hi everyone

I'm using the Bambino Mio Solo nappies for my 6 month old baby and I'm at my wits end because they're constantly leaking. I barely get 2 hours of wear before all her clothes and soaked in wee. Im using them on the smallest and sometimes middle setting - but neither makes any difference. I've invested a small fortune in these nappies, anyone got any ideas? I don't really want to use the booster in the daytime as that would make the nappy even more impossibly huge...

I'm about to give up this whole eco friendly journey 😫 Anyone else got the same problem!?

I found they were not absorbent enough once DD hit the 6-8 month stage when she started weeing more. It is because they are entirely microfibre so absorb quickly but not large amounts. If clothes are even a little tight, they are subject to compression leaks. They were reasonably slim alone but bulked up a lot when boosted.

If you're considering boosting, I recommend not using their booster and buying hemp/bamboo ones. I second the recommendation for Motherease Unos though, they came out when DD was just over 1 and I ended up converting all my nappies to them which saw me through 2 children with both in cloth at the same time for a while. You should be able to pick up second hand ones for about £10-12 each and can sell your current ones for at least £6 each, if not a little more.

I didn't need a single vest extender with unos. Boosting them lasted the night for DD, DS needed the duos with night insert and booster (much more wee!)

I loved them but used a little lamb triple thickness bamboo booster in them, hope boosting works for you!

If the nappy is soaked through when they leak it is lack of absorbency. If there are still dry bits it's a bad fit. We use Bumgenius pocket nappies and they leak very quickly if we only use the inserts they come with. We use two the big micro fibre insert they come with and add two thin (and very cheap) bamboo boosters. The nappy isn't too much larger and they go 3-4 hours usually (maybe one leak every 1-2 weeks if she's gone hours without weeing then floods them). The bamboo takes ages to dry but they are cheap so we just bought loads.

Def look at tots bots easyfit if you want all in one. They have a blend of bamboo and cotton within microfibre so you get absorbancy, without bulk. They keep emailing offers at the moment so you can get older style prints for about £6 to try

@BluePassportsAreBollocks exactly! This really was a bit of an investment and I'm so disappointed. Today's the day though, will try the boosters and hopefully get a better experience!

Yes our Bambinos have always leaked pee horrendously. I persevered with DD1 but I'm honestly not sure I can be arsed with DD2 Sad I tried her in them last week and she was soaked through within two hours. She's still tiny so to boost them would make her absolutely massive and it doesn't look comfortable for her. And I don't fancy spending another small fortune on another brand. I feel like reusable nappy tech still has a bit of a way to go tbh.

The good thing is that reusable nappies tend to sell well on second-hand market!

WalkingOnMarshmallow · 10/09/2022 15:15

@prescribingmum I've just put the booster in today (their own one) and my god it's so huge her sleepsuit is now too tight, so I tried on a bigger size 6-9 months but even that is tight where the nappy is! 😫

@AegonT thank you - good advice!

@Hugasauras yes same problem here, I've just boosted today and the nappy is absolutely gigantic and none of her clothes fit!

I ended up selling on our bambino mios after having the same issue. The good news is they maintain value quite well because people like to collect the designs.

We switched to two parters including the airflow wrap and they were bombproof. You can usually pick them up secondhand too if cost is an issue. Check out the nappy lady buying and selling group on fb.

Hi OP, lots of good advice here already re boosting. I was also thinking it might be worth revisiting your ‘technique’ as in making sure you’re putting them on properly. I now I used to always get leaks when I wasn’t paying attention / very wriggly baby. I found that getting the nappy elastic into the leg crease rather than half way down the thigh helped stop wicking to her clothes. the nappy lady has tonnes of advice on her website - if you’ve not already found it have a look as she might have some ideas on there tht help you.

WalkingOnMarshmallow · 10/09/2022 16:59

@Battybonkers thank you, that's good advice - I'll have a look at the nappy lady too! 👍🏼

Could someone send me a link to these bamboo boosters that everyone's talking about? I'll order some today because the bambino mio boosters are just massive on my little girl. 🙏

These ones? amzn.eu/d/funtkZ6

Yes those are the ones I use.

CheapandTrashy · 11/09/2022 10:01

Try bells bumz! Absolutely brilliant nappy brand. Definitely don’t use microfibre and Vinted tends to have good value nappies on there if you don’t want to spend so much.

WalkingOnMarshmallow · 11/09/2022 12:41

A little update! I've tried the bambino mio booster - too huge on my little girl BUT I've tried fitting the nappy properly and now I've not had any leaks in 3.5 hrs twice in a row. That's a pretty huge improvement!!

OP posts:
WalkingOnMarshmallow · 11/09/2022 12:44

@Battybonkers thank for the advice - it really works!

OP posts:
Battybonkers · 11/09/2022 13:58

No problem - it’s a bit counterintuitive as well so not obvious!

AnnaBegins · 11/09/2022 14:20

Fabulous news, so glad you could tweak the fit!

dottyrobin · 11/09/2022 14:27

Bambino Mio were my go to as they were easy to use for nursery. There were some teething problems with leakage at nursery but once fitting properly they worked great. I never had any issues at home but I think I might have changed more frequently.
However I always always boosted them, never used them without a booster as they were pretty poor.

BearBibble · 11/09/2022 14:39

This is why we ended up switching to disposables. I just couldn't deal with the constantly urine-soaked clothes and furniture. Everything smelled like old urine and it did my head in. We couldn't afford to try loads of different brands (especially once we'd shelled out for a big stash of bambino mios) and I found all the info and jargon on sites like the nappy lady overwhelming.
Part of me is tempted to try the old style ones that you fold out of a square of fabric and pin, with DC2, as I think my mum would probably able to show me how to make them work. But I don't know where you can get hold of them - all that seems to be available now are very complicated contraptions with loads of straps and buttons and pockets and boosters, and you need a textiles degree to know all you need to know about the characteristics of different types of natural and synthetic fabrics... It's overwhelming, and just feels like another way in which being environmentally friendly is restricted to people with time, money and intelligence/a good education on their side.

WalkingOnMarshmallow · 11/09/2022 15:03

@BearBibble I know how you feel 😂😂😂
