So who is going to stop selling on ebay after the feedback rules come in next month?

Me for one. I have a good rating and don't want to see it tumble just because people are free to leave me bad feedback as a seller without any fear of getting the same back.

I am an honest and I like to think scrupulous seller, I am on the case whenever I have a buyer who isn't happy - but there are some who just take the proverbial, and this means they will be free to run amok.

For anyone who doesn't know about it, the announcement is Here here]].

Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral feedback for buyers.

I understand it is to protect the buyer but what about the seller?

I only have one neg, it was a ret from a nasty, nasty seller who sent me a pair of shoes that went straight in the bin.
I am still not in favour of the new system, despite being far more involved in buying than in selling.

IMO selling is far harder, if done responsibly - it carries far more responsibility. You always miss something incredibly minor when listing and buyers can string you up for the tiniest thing...you have to pack, send and track, you have to handle postal loss/damage claims if necessary, you have to communicate at all times with your buyer - all the buyer needs to do is pay for the thing they have won.

That doesn't merit a massive amount of praise in itself really - you don't bid unless you are going to, and able to, pay, do you?

A seller really has to put in the graft and I don't rule out leaving fb before the buyer, as I occasionally do this, but normally I will wait and see if they present with a problem over their purchase and hope that the manner in which I handle it is satisfactory/worthy of a positive.

If they try to pull a fast one (recent 'damage' that the parcelforce inspector 'wouldn't be able to see', for example) or are rude or very impatient, I don't think that would really merit a good feedback.

From Ebay selling Tutorial part 5

  1. Completing your sales

At the end of a successful listing, both you and the buyer will receive and end of auction email from eBay, detailing the final price of the item and payment instructions. If you didn't include payment details in your listing, make sure you contact the buyer to arrange payment and delivery details.

If you have opted to receive PayPal payments, you will receive a "You've got cash" email from PayPal once the buyer has paid. Simply click on this email to sign into PayPal and review the details of the payment. Remember to only post the item once you have received payment.

Once the sale is complete, leave feedback for your buyer and encourage them to do the same for you.

Fllight · 22/04/2008 12:13

Yes, exactly, 'once the sale is complete'. I would say that meant once they had the goods and you had your payment. Non?

BroccoliSpears · 22/04/2008 12:20

I don't understand why people are so afraid of a neg. Would you buy from someone with a neg? Yes. So people will still buy from you if you have one, especially if you're a decent seller and it's obvious that the neg is a one off. Misunderstandings happen and pretty much all ebay users understand this.

sixlostmonkeys · 22/04/2008 12:24

"Once the sale is complete, leave feedback for your buyer and encourage them to do the same for you."

exactly! once the sale/transaction is complete, not when payment is made- which is just the start of the transaction.

as fllight says - once they have the goods - and they let the seller know they have goods and are happy, either with FB or a message - only then is the sale complete and the seller able to leave FB

madamez · 22/04/2008 12:27

Actually, I am a seller and nearly always leave good feedback for the buyer once they have paid and I have posted the item. I recently had a problem with a buyer who didn't collect her item from the post office (I post recorded delivery); I agreed to send it again though she did not offer to send any more money for postage. Next thing (well some two weeks later) she has registered a dispute and left neg feedback saying item not recieved. I replied both to the dispute and the feedback saying that I would have preferred her to contact me directly before registering a dispute and asking if she had tried the post office again. I have since heard nothing. As I have paid for a second lot of postage (bringin the total to within a few pennies of her payment for item and postage originally) I am not going to refund the silly bitch as it sounds like it's her fault she doesn;t have her item.

sixlostmonkeys · 22/04/2008 12:31

madamez - that is a perfect example of why the seller shouldn't leave FB 1st - anything can go wrong after payment is made.

sixlostmonkeys · 22/04/2008 12:34

Broccoli - It's not a case of being afraid of a neg it's a case of if buyers get trigger happy with the neg button rather than communicate (for eg) then a seller's listings will drop down the search or they may get suspended. This for me, would mean no food on the table, or even a table.... or even a house to put the table in.

cluckyagain · 22/04/2008 12:48

I buy and sell on ebay and I've only ever had one problem with a non posting seller (which ended up in a dispute, refund and then neg feedback from her to me!!!) Although it annoyed me that she was able to do this, as a seller I've had far more problems from non-paying/ extremely slow paying buyers and I too think it's jolly easy as a buyer and jolly difficult as a seller - for the profits you make it's a complete farce 'protecting' the buyer more than the seller. The only thing you could do as a seller with a rotten/dishonest buyer is to (if I was being really, really nasty and horrid) buy their stuff (if they sell) and then leave neg for them.....utterly ridiculous though...really stooping to their level and could end up with vastly silly incidents all over the place.

squilly · 22/04/2008 13:09

I had a neg from a woman who had not bothered to collect an item from the post office. I'd left feedback on payment saying 'good buyer' then she left me feedback without even contacting me. I offered her a refund but she didn't even bother coming back to me. How does my 'good buyer' feedback stand when you look at that situation?? This person had other negs from other people too, but you can't judge every buyer you get. Especially when it's a toy for a couple of quid, so you just accept it.

I also had a woman who accused me of selling Disney fakes (do they do even bother making Disney fakes???) I had sourced the items from the UK license holder directly, so they were definitely genuine. I gave her her money back and covered the postage BOTH WAYS so she wouldn't be out of pocket and STILL got neutralled!!! Go figure!

I now leave feedback AFTER the transaction is complete. Otherwise I'm saying 'great buyer' when actually they might be a complete armhole who negs first and doesn't bother contacting me at all! Or who takes the p**s beyond all reason.

I figure I'll deal with the negs in the future as they come. And I'm sure they will!!! But what can you do? Tazbar is not a real alternative because you don't get the viewers Ebay does. Ebay aren't daft. They know they've got us all over a barrel. If you applied the Monopolies commission rules to them, they'd be stuffed. Because there is no competition...

sixlostmonkeys · 22/04/2008 13:23

btw - you have all heard that buyers are being given money off vouchers from ebay whenever they leave a neg haven't you?

MsPontipine · 22/04/2008 13:33

NO !!

I hadn't - however could it just be coincidence?? I got a voucher for £2.50 and I hadn't left one.

How much are they getting?

AbbeyA · 22/04/2008 13:50

I buy and sell small amounts of stuff on ebay and haven't had a problem yet. I am not sure if I will continue after the new ruling.
As a buyer I always leave feedback as soon as I get it because it is straightforward-either you are hapy or you are not. As a seller I always wait for the buyer's feedback, just because they pay doesn't make them a good buyer-they can be completely unreasonable after they have bought it! One case that sticks in my mind was someone who sold a bottle of well known perfume, sealed and well before it's sell by date. The buyer opened it and wanted a refund saying that she didn't like the smell!!! If she had given a refund the seller then had an opened bottle of perfume so could only sell it as such (if anyone then wanted to buy it). I have had a few problems with selling but luckily have had lovely buyers and we have sorted things out amicably and they have been able to give good feedback.
I will buy off a person with negative feedback-if you read the comments you can ofen tell that it was undeserved however I do not want to jeopordise my 100% feedback.
I have looked for an alternative site but not found one as good.

ninedragons · 22/04/2008 13:50

Jesus, talk about giving people an incentive.

sixlostmonkeys · 22/04/2008 13:55

It's a £10 voucher

quote - Evening everyone,

This is meant as a 'sorry about that' gesture to buyers who have had a bad experience on the site.

Naturally we won't dish one out every time a buyer leaves a low DSR; we're not quite that dim, contrary to board opinion

This initial trial is issuing coupons to a random sample of buyers the first time that they leave low DSRs.

  • end quote.

I have heard of quite a few who have received these vouchers, who didn't fit into the above criteria ie first time and they certainly didn't want the vouchers.
No matter how much ebay claim there is a lot of criteria etc, rumor will have its way and buyers will try and 'win' a tenner

MsPontipine · 22/04/2008 14:07

Huh

chenin · 22/04/2008 14:20

I am really dim with regard to Ebay but my experience with buying from there would have benefits under this new system...

Bought something electrical and heavy (heavy postage costs that were more than what item cost) and despite me asking seller to assure me it worked before I bought, it did not. Contacted seller 4 times over three weeks... she ignored all contact by me. Got an electrician to check the goods who stated the goods were faulty and could not have worked prior to postage. Emailed seller again... she ignored.

Left neg feedback stating facts. Seller then retaliated with the most awful neg feedback saying I was a scammer and a cheat and everyone should beware. This was my first experience of Ebay and I was shocked! It put me off for life as am now a minus 1 neg feedback ebayer!

mumofdjandbabies · 22/04/2008 16:12

what a crock

wouldnt it be interesting to start new thread and keep it running called

MAY FEEDBACK CHANGES - WHAT I GOT A NEG FOR

.....(sorry im tired can someone rephrase that)

am absol shattered today.....

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 22/04/2008 16:33

perhaps when you are happy to leave feedback depends on what you sell- DH has a business selling electronic items on ebay and he wont leave feedback until after item received and either feedback posted or email received to say OK, as we have had a few people altely taking the item apart, destroying chips etc and then insisting item never worked. As we replace all items that don't work, we get it back, and it isn't until Dh tries to repair that he realises what happened.

Also had lots of people not paying lately, really annoying

We're part reliant on ebay for income though so will ahve to continue

mumofdjandbabies · 22/04/2008 16:54

That is so annoying for you

so in that situ why do they destroy it is it to steal a part then they return the part for a full refund?

SoMuchToBits · 22/04/2008 16:56

Can someone tell me what the recent changes have been regarding searching, please? I do use eBay, but wasn't aware of these changes. Thanks.

Fllight · 22/04/2008 17:15

Oh it's horrible isn't it? I can't find things any more...I think if you go to the home page and scroll to the bottom and there should be a link to announcements. Should be on there. I haven't looked as it's too depressing!
Giving up on ebay, once my current listings have finished.

ProfYaffle · 22/04/2008 17:15

I mostly buy from Ebay but have also sold a handful of stuff. I don't think I'll bother selling after the fb changes, looks like potential for far too much hassle. The trouble is there's no real alternative for selling. I've tried cheapcycle which has the small but important flaw of having hardly anyone signed up to it in our area

As a buyer I also hate the idea of preference being given to bigger sellers in the listings. I like seeing quirky individual stuff, that's what makes it unique.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 22/04/2008 17:17

mumofdj, what we think (and its guesswork) is that they buy the item for a specific event- it's specialist lighting equipment- and they damage and return for a refund.

only other explanation we can think of is they bought the wrong item, but we always exchange for that so they should just ask, and also Dh spends hours sometimes wth people on the phone discussing their needs to make sure its right for just a few pounds profit- some people think they know it all though I guess?

AbbeyA · 22/04/2008 17:35

I try and avoid buying anything off the bigger sellers, I like to buy from people like me who just get rid of mistake buys or something that they no longer want.
