£685,000 item with economy delivery

Somebody is currently trying to sell a 50pence for £685,000 on Ebay but are only offering Economy delivery. It might be my imagination but there are an increasing amount of buyers trying to flog items for thousands more than they are worth. This coin for example does not even sell for £2. I checked the various completed items of that description.

A really terrible attempt at money laundering?

IncompleteSenten · 18/11/2023 19:26

I tend to assume they're not actually selling what they claim to be selling.

PuttingDownRoots · 18/11/2023 19:28

Drugs?

QuitMoaning · 18/11/2023 19:29

I was watching a program once, a detective drama or similar, maybe a film, and they said that things that are completely incorrectly priced are actually a front for something else entirely, like drugs. I think the drama had human trafficking (I think young girls for prostitution). You buy the 50p and this gives you entrance to the market place for the illegal items.

However this was on Tv or a film so could be a complete fabrication. Might have been an episode of Elementary.

mumda · 18/11/2023 19:58

Someone on the local Facebook group was selling the most expensive cake in the world. Really expensive. Didn't look that exciting. Assumed it was drugs rather than actual cake.

I read an article a few years back about Wayfair. Apparently they list, for example, a wardrobe for several thousands of pounds. The wardrobe is actually a trafficked child.

Whether that's true, I've no idea, but I've always avoided Wayfair after reading that.

You will pleased to know it's absolute cobblers and an urban myth that was busted ages ago.

It's maybe my 13yo 😁She has a stash to sell on vinted, she reckons £3 each. She cracks me up, always up for earning a buck.

So she tells me but money burns a hole in her pocket and she's too bloody generous w and spends it all on everyone and the dog.

Placeholder item.
The Seller wants to maintain a listing without making a sale - it's a ranking thing.

Yes. Loads of people do this.

I'm very disappointed though as I assumed this was going to be the Twelve Days of Christmas Centrepiece.

coldcallerbaiter · 18/11/2023 20:49

Probably a placeholder

Might be put point wrong place when listing and it is 6.85

What benefit does the seller get from a listing like that? I don't understand.

So you don't t have to pay a re-listing fee. Perhaps you are unavailable to post a sold item or to answer questions. Or you run out of an item but you are getting more next week.

justanothernamechangemonday · 18/11/2023 21:10

Do people really think people traffickers operate on eBay and Wayfair? Halloween Confused there's a dark web for a reason!

SabrinaThwaite · 18/11/2023 21:16

Has anybody ever bought a Twelve Days of Christmas Centrepiece? Or is it just to lure you in to buy whatever other crap they have on sale?

PlipPlopChoo · 18/11/2023 21:18

Look at the sellers other items. I doubt that is the case here.

I think it is a simple case of trying it on and hope some moron thinks the coin is actually valuable. Nothing more nothing less.

It's when they run out of stock or similar. The listing stays in place so they don't have to create a new one when they get stock.

Ignore all the posts above of people blathering on about drugs, child trafficing and the like... as if such people would advertise on eBay!
