Anyone up for a funds generating clear out challenge ?

fairisledog · 17/05/2021 16:07

I did this some years ago and it was definitely motivating to have a thread sharing success/lack of success with others doing the same.

I need to get listing to raise funds for a particular expense coming up in July.

I will need to switch from paypal to a separate bank account along the way so can share the joys of that too.

Anyone else ?

Count me in, I did it at Xmas and again for the April Bank holiday and made a couple of hundred quid.
I've just listed some clothing bundles and they all have bids so I'm off to a good start.

The worst part for me is taking the photos, it feels like such a chore. I'm trying to photograph and list one new thing every day atm.

UhtredRagnarson · 18/05/2021 11:36

Count me in. I have so much stuff to get rid of. I have collected it all into my dining room. It looks like a jumble sale. I listed two things on marketplace before the weekend. One thing got no response. The other, despite clearly stating pick up only, a woman arranged to come and get it on the Saturday, then asked if I “wanted” to meet her in Asda, I said I would be at home all afternoon for pick up, and then when it came to the time she said she’d come she asked if I could meet her somewhere. Fucking NO!! I can’t- that’s why I stated pick up only. Grrr. The hassle is what’s putting me off.

Great, so there's enough of us to share the experience.

I echo the "jumble sale" description. I have previously listed some clothing items as one-offs but I'm sure I'll get a better return overall by making up some bundles by age range including a mix of stuff. The postage costs are much more attractive for buyers getting several items in one parcel. Photographing everything takes so long though.

Have started already with outgrown footwear, after laboriously cleaning soles or putting some items through the washing machine. The shoe racks are looking much tidier.
Have also just got rid of some school extra curricular activity equipment no longer needed which raised £35 !

I offer local collection on everything but never seem to get any takers. It helps to be only 10 mins walk away from a courier collection/drop off point too. I've been using the e-bay packlink service.

I'm aiming for £500 (after selling costs). Possibly over ambitious I know, but I haven't had a major clear out for over 3 years and really need the space and the funds.

I'm not keen on facebook selling, prefer to remain a bit more anonymous. I generally put free stuff on facebook free to any taker when it's big/heavy and I just want someone to come and take it way. You still get people asking for it and then asking for it to be delivered for free too. If it's nice weather I can often get rid of random non saleable stuff by putting it out in front of the house in a box with a help yourself label and then a message on facebook local page saying come and look. If I'm lucky the cardboard box disappears too !

Definitely got some stuff to get rid of - books, perfume and clothes but had some very negative experiences on eBay recently with a dodgy buyer and several non payers. Not sure where else to try selling but might try FB marketplace for specific selling groups (although a bit put off by the above!)

Ideally would like to make money for charity as well as some cash for the kids!

Thelnebriati · 18/05/2021 21:21

I've got 20 listings up and 3 bids already!

fairisledog · 19/05/2021 07:31

@TheInebriati

That's impressive !

I'm currently at 41 listings (but I had the day off yesterday) and only 2 bids but watchers on a few more items.

I have some standard wording that I cut and paste in to the lower half of the description box to save time.

I still need to sort out an alternative separate bank account to replace paypal in order to minimise fees once e-bay effect their changes (at the end of May for me).

@Lookdeepintotheparka I have used the donate a portion to charity tick box in the listings if it's a higher priced item I'm selling. Charity shops round here are not easily accessible for dropping off bags of stuff and I have found staff to be a bit picky (my stuff's not tatty honestly Grin). They're also inundated with donations following people having clearouts during lockdown periods.

Thelnebriati · 20/05/2021 13:50

I've got 4 bids and two best offers so thats £40 before post. Its all stuff that was going to the charity chop, which is still shut.

fairisledog · 20/05/2021 14:33

£40, that's a good flying start TheInebriati !

OP posts:
strangeshapedpotato · 20/05/2021 16:23

I'm in - sort of started already with 17 sales this month, but I've got a ton more stuff to get shut of.

Today I'm cleaning up an old antique tin box, a fireside, brass plated, tinder box and a guitar for sale.

I can heartily recommend FB marketplace btw - it's quite hit and miss - when someone views the marketplace, they get shown a selection of recent posts depending on what they've searched for recently. After a couple of days, items fall out of this list and the seller needs to renew them (after 7 days) to get them back to the top. You can still SEARCH for specific items and see all those available, but attracting interest in that first 24h makes for quick sales.

You can hide listings from friends, and you can set your FB profile so that everything on it is private - only viewable by friends - then buyers only get to see your profile photo.

You do get a lot of "still available" questions followed by silence, so don't start writing essays in reply until you know there is genuine interest. I usually just reply "yes" and the postcode.

The nice thing about FB is you're in total control. If you don't want to sell to someone because they mess you about, you don't have to. Price-wise, it's worth looking at what things are selling for on ebay, and advertising them on FB for the same.

Thelnebriati · 22/05/2021 13:34

I'm in shock, 5 sales raised £105 this week (before fees and post).

I have spent £20 of that on some new clothes Grin

lljkk · 22/05/2021 14:07

I am just back from a carboot sale where i didn't even make my pitch fee --always the way with carboots! But count me in, I now have a big pile that may sell online when carboot failed. :)

FTEngineerM · 22/05/2021 14:12

What a cool idea; I’ve just put the last of my clothes on eBay that were never ever going to fit (still with tags on, cry) and they’ve all sold woohoo.

Just put some big ticket items like sofa we don’t use and a few baby items on Facebook market place, is there anywhere else that’s better than there?

fairisledog · 22/05/2021 16:29

@lljkk and you can stay warm and dry whilst listing even though it's more hassle that a car boot sale.

Disappointing weekend finish to many of my e-bay auctions. Quite a few watchers on stuff but only 3 items sold totalling approx £25 before p&p & fees,

Have rifled through various collections of stuff around the house, discussed with kids about stuff they no longer want/use and now have over 60 listings running.

I'm putting off doing the clothes though, hanging/photographing/describing takes longer than listing an unwanted dvd set or toy.

Anyone had any luck this weekend ?

OP posts:
FTEngineerM · 24/05/2021 13:39

All 7 items of clothing sold for a whopping £53😂🤭 but nobody wants my sofa grr which is what I want gone the most.

How low do I go? It’s a great sofa just don’t want it, am I being precious?

FTEngineerM · 24/05/2021 13:39

Also I hope your next lot sells all those things should get a decent income Smile

Thelnebriati · 26/05/2021 00:19

I sold 18 out of 20 listings and took nearly £150 before post and fees! I just put up another 20 listings.
I'm knackered but very happy 😀

fairisledog · 26/05/2021 09:34

Surprise best offer of £20 and £5 on two items. Speedily accepted and all packaged waiting for payment. That's more than doubled this weeks total so far.

My target timescale is end of July so I'm not setting starting bids that low initially, will reduce and relist what's left if no takers by end of June. I also allow offers, but set it to reject all offers of less than about £1 under starting bid. Due to the work involved, I'd rather give it away than start at 99p and see it only reach a little over that.

Found and listed one big bundle of kids TV character collection stickers early this morning and have 2 watchers already.

When you work it out it's possibly a low rate of pay per hour of setting up listings but it's like getting paid to declutter your own home instead of paying a professional de-clutterer to do it.

Do you have a ££ target in mind @Thelnebriati ?

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 27/05/2021 01:17

No target, I just want to declutter and raise some cash to pay off the washing machine. If there's any left over it will go towards decorating and some new furniture.
I've been very lucky, I had a couple of vintage and hand made items that I didn't think would fetch more than a couple of pounds but they caught peoples eye.
I'm going to go for it again this weekend.

fairisledog · 29/05/2021 12:07

I've had 2 items on e-bay for 3 years now. I just kept re-listing them every month or so, dropped the price a little on the more expensive item last year but still no interest.

WoooHooo ! One of these items has finally just sold ! £15 payback for leaving it hanging in the wardrobe instead of charity shopping it.

Have a busy weekend but hoping to squeeze in some listing too. Still cherry-picking a little and avoiding the massive pile of outgrown teen age clothing.

Thelnebriati · 29/05/2021 18:39

I forgot its bank holiday on Monday, I've been busy listing and already sold another £60 worth. I've got my eye on some new trainers.

fairisledog · 02/06/2021 16:31

I have now made just over £300 after fees and p&p !

I've also set up a new bank account and linked it to my ebay account just for e-baying. I'm in the process of emptying out the paypal funds into the account so that I can see the balance (hopefully) grow.

Had to stock up on tape and facing the challenge of packing up a fragile electrical item to send via courier this afternoon. Tackling my jumble sale looking clothing pile later on today too. How's yours going @UhtredRagnarson ?

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 02/06/2021 23:23

I took £120 over the Bank holiday but my post bill took a chunk of that.
I'm a bit worried, I sold an item and imo the buyer paid at least 3 times what its worth. The description and photos are accurate but I can't see this ending well.

On the plus side I've cleared out 2 bin liners of stuff.

RulesRulesRulesRulesRules · 03/06/2021 07:40

Oooo please can i join you?
Planning to list some stuff this week.

I'm considering another platform though as annoyed ebay stoped paypal.

(Have started a thread to find out other's experiences of Vinted & Dpop)

Blueberry40 · 03/06/2021 08:03

I would like to join please- this thread is giving me the push I need to get started!

Have got loads of things to list (mainly lots of clothes that I no longer fit into unfortunately) and hoping to make around £300 to go towards redecorating. Have been putting it off but going to try and spend a day next week listing it all as have a few days off work.
