Without being too outing an item I put on eBay is selling for way more than it’s worth and I can’t sell it without feeling really bad.
I have put this in the description, told people what it is and specifically asked that people don’t get carried away but it’s going for twice the amount it’s worth. You can literally buy it in the shops for less right now!

Now it’s got bids on it I can’t revise the selling price or put Offers Accepted. I did think I put a Buy it Now price but it didn’t show up.It says I can end it with extra costs involved but I don’t want to disappoint my highest bidder either.
Anything I can do?

Why do you think it’s going so much higher? Is it out of stock elsewhere?

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 02/12/2020 13:58

It's not your job to police what other people pay for something. Let them make their decisions and you just post it.

growinggreyer · 02/12/2020 14:00

Just double check the payment is through before posting the item as I am sure I have read of a scam involving massive overbidding.

borageforager · 02/12/2020 14:01

If you’ve been clear that is their choice/mistake I think. Wait to see if a buyer actually coughs up...

Desperate to know what the item is!

Plonque · 02/12/2020 14:01

I wouldn't worry, it's their issue not yours.
Don't do yourself out of a little Christmas treat - accept the money, post on time and your job is done.
Merry Christmas to you!

Catchytune · 02/12/2020 14:01

It’s not rare and a very cheap brand - there a million not unlike it right now it the shops. In fact the price it’s selling for would get them a much better version. I’d feel terrible selling it.

I have NO idea why it’s selling so well except maybe people go a bit nuts at auctions?

You’ve clearly got a strong conscience which is admirable. I think ‘caveat emptor’ really, but you could always give the buyer a partial refund if you really can’t square it with your conscience...

MoonDelay · 02/12/2020 14:03

There are tons of things on Ebay going for more than they're selling for in shops. Perhaps it's people who are unable to get to the shops right now and things are available to them online. Enjoy the extra money! It's not unusual

MoonDelay · 02/12/2020 14:04

*unavailable

Yeah I'd second PP, make sure you get the dosh first and insurance when posting it.

Wyntersdiary · 02/12/2020 14:05

I often pay way more for stuff just to be able to get it online. im Lazy and i dont want to go to the shops

Kazzyhoward · 02/12/2020 14:07

As long as your description is honest and clear, then don't worry about it.

People over-pay for things all the time, sometimes because they don't care about money, sometimes because they don't have shops locally selling it, etc.

We once sold a wooden train set from Tesco. It was widely available in store at £15. We paid about a tenner in the sales the year before. It was bid-up to over £30. We contacted the seller directly to confirm exactly what it was and they replied saying they knew it was more than in store but that they hadn't a Tesco local to them and they really needed the set..

Years ago, we had a nice little earner selling a particular hobby book - we had a hobby shop nearby who sold the book, but we knew it was pretty rare (not the kind of thing sold by Amazon etc). We noticed them selling on Ebay for silly money, so bought a few and sold them at silly money. The price wasn't marked on the book, and they weren't available online, so buyers really didn't know how much they sold for in normal shops. The Ebay price became the "norm". Eventually the publisher and/or retailers caught on and the shop started selling them at Ebay prices, but it was nice whilst it lasted.

GreyishDays · 02/12/2020 14:07

You can do a partial refund via PayPal once it’s sold if you want. Smile

I get that but they can’t see it in person and can’t get a refund as I’ve described it perfectly. I think they’re at a disadvantage.

We’ve all had stuff online we are disappointed with and I can’t do that to someone.

Is it an Aldi carrot or similar? If so, people are paying for a sure thing, rather than a possibly unsuccessful trip out and scrimmage.

viques · 02/12/2020 14:09

Check out the amount of feedback of the bidders. Are they new or old hands?

SpamIAm · 02/12/2020 14:11

If people want to pay over the odds for it then that's their choice. If they may be mistaken about what it actually is then I'd clarify with them before posting (eg I recently sold a toddler tablet, but double checked the buyer realised it wasn't a real tablet but just buttons that could be pressed and made noises).

Catchytune · 02/12/2020 14:12

I mean potentially disappoint them.

OP posts:
Redburnett · 02/12/2020 14:12

On the one occasion this happened to me the winning bidder did not pay or communicate at all.

GerardWay123 · 02/12/2020 14:13

Something is only worth what someone will willingly pay for it.
It's up to them. It's the same with houses, cars etc.

sofiaaaaaa · 02/12/2020 14:14

The thing is, this could always be a scam. If they’re offering a price that’s too good to be true, be wary. The might have some weird sob story after the auction ends about how they will pay via western union because some relative across the world is dying or whatever etc.

Sweettea1 · 02/12/2020 14:20

Am I the only one who wants to know what it is.

Dinosaur19 · 02/12/2020 14:21

Lots of people do put silly bids in on eBay and never actually pay. If they’re willing to pay for it then let them!

Harrisismyparadise · 02/12/2020 14:57

It’s not a PlayStation box is it?

MikeUniformMike · 02/12/2020 15:02

It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

I've sold things for much more than I expected to get, and things for much less.

If you are in doubt, send a note with the invoice.

Watch out for buyers not paying within a couple of days. They often only have a few feedback entries, all from sellers. They usually will cite illness or needing to wait for payday.

CorianderQueen · 02/12/2020 15:49

Maybe there's something you don't know about it
