Bought a FAKE bag on ebay! Advice needed!!! ARGGHH

The seller had a 100% positive feedback rating at the time of purchase but later on another buyer left a negative feedback saying they were sold fake goods! When I took the bag to the shop for authentification, they were very impressed that it was a very well made piece of counterfeit!

I opened a dispute through Paypal straight away but the seller has been extremely defiant and now accuses me of being harsh, unhelpful and uncorperative. I asked the seller to refund the money within the next five days but the seller said it will take more than 9 days as his/her bank details are being verified atm.

Have any of you had a dispute? How long did it take to get your money back?

I feel I'm dealing with a professional con person.

Any advice will be much appreciated. TIA

Thanks Aimsmum! Dunno why seller's bank details have to be verified by Paypal at this stage, sounds a bit fishy tbh. Anyway, I really hope the seller will return my money back.

Sounds a bit fishy to me the bank thing.

I had something like that on an outfit for dd and the seller then closed their ebay account so paypal couldn't get them. Eventually with a lot of pushing I got my money through paypal

Email the seller again and again on this and keep the copies of the emails

katz · 10/09/2007 09:20

if you get no where with paypoal, then report the person to the police, selling counterfiet goods is illegal.

kitsandbits · 10/09/2007 09:25

If the seller agrees to refund once the paypal dispute is open you could get your money today, if they are unco-operative and you have to esculate to a claim (where paypla decides who is right) it can take 2 months.

PaulaRaty · 10/09/2007 10:21

You must report it but sometimes it can take ages to get a result. I once paid for a wide screen t.v from someone (stupid me) and all ebay did was make him unregistered even though it didn't work, but that was a few years ago and I think things are better now

MrsSpoon · 10/09/2007 10:30

You've got to be so careful with this, I was buying a bag the other week and was given the heads up by a few MNetters about the fakes. I found this forum and they have a section where you can link to a potential e-Bay item and get advice from the other members as to whether a bag is fake or not.

Agree that you must report it.

SushiMummy · 10/09/2007 11:23

Thanks for all the advice, all!

The seller has agreed to pay me back but said my five-day time limit is very unreasonable as she/he has not enough funds with Paypal account and takes 7-9 days for transfer plus 3-5 days of verification so in total 10-14 days.

Anyway, I will call Paypal call centre to see if the above is a valid explanation, if not, I will escalate the dispute after the five day limit is over.

BTW, I have reported to ebay about this bag.

Thanks so much again!

Sushimummy, I have a Paypay account and have had to verify it as there was attempted fraud on it, the account was out of action for a period of time (can't remember exactly how long, could have been around a week), could it be something like this with the seller?

MrsSpoon · 10/09/2007 13:11

Out of noseyness (as I was looking last week), what type of bag?

SushiMummy · 10/09/2007 16:55

MrsSpoon, thanks again! Probably so. As for the type of the bag, well, let's just say it's a very well copied French design bag.

OP posts:
MrsSpoon · 10/09/2007 17:18

I possibly was looking at those last week, quite a number of fakes apparently .

SushiMummy · 11/09/2007 11:46

Update - Have contacted Paypal after receiving various reasons from the seller as to why s/he can't pay me back the next five days and the reasons are beyond me to verify. Paypal suggested to escalate to a claim straight away, so I did. I have proof from the shop so should be able to get all my money back.[crosses fingers]

You should report the seller to the police. DO Not send back the bag before you have spoken to the police.

A man was recently jailed for selling designer fakes on ebay. They confiscated his house, his car, and his accounts.

SoupDragon · 11/09/2007 11:53

It can take that long to link/verify a bank account to your Paypal account and then add funds via that link.

Paypal send 2 small amounts to your account and you have to type the amounts into Paypal when they arrive (takes a few days). then you can transfer money from that account to your Paypal account which takes a further amount of time.

SushiMummy · 11/09/2007 11:55

Well, the seller didn't give me the address (surprise, surprise!) so I only know the name s/he uses with Paypal (which could be anything?). Is it enough to report to the police?

OP posts:
StellaPolaris · 11/09/2007 11:58

It is, as the police will work with paypal on this. They are cracking down on fraud now.

You will also get a lot of useful advise if you go to the "New To Ebay" in the ebay community chat boards (i dont know if you have already). To trade on ebay, and to use paypal, you need to have an address registered. So though Paypal will not tell you, they will tell the police should they ask for the address.

Also, if you look on the invoice the seller sent, there might be some more info there?

SushiMummy · 11/09/2007 12:00

Paypal suggested a claim so they must know something about the seller that I don't. Anyway, I simply don't trust the seller and don't want to waste any more time and effort to communicate with the seller tbh.

Thanks again all!

SushiMummy · 11/09/2007 12:08

Stella, there was no invoice. It was sent from Hong Kong according to the stamps, not from London as the seller described.

OP posts:
StellaPolaris · 11/09/2007 12:12

Oh sushi,
A very skilled conperson then. Most of feedback of hong kong sellers are also a con... It is against ebay rules to be untruthful about location, that is a reason to have listings pulled!

Where was the seller registered?

Have you kept the wrapping paper? I seriously think you should report it to the police....

SushiMummy · 11/09/2007 12:25

Yes, Stella. Have kept all the wrapping paper and other evidence. The seller is registered in London btw.

OP posts:
StellaPolaris · 11/09/2007 12:29

So if he is registered in London he should accurate describe where goods are coming from in Item Location. Some scammers say Item Location London, but it may say in small print further down that you should expect up to 3 weeks delivery time (which is unheard of in ebay terms if your item really is with you) and this normally indicates that the item is abroad, and if you query the seller he may actually say item is coming from Canada, or Hong Kong, etc.

Still think you should call the police about it.

SushiMummy · 11/09/2007 12:35

Stella, I asked my barrister friend and she said as long as you get your money back the police would not be interested to know. So I just leave it as it is for now.

OP posts:
StellaPolaris · 11/09/2007 12:38

Oh in that case....
I guess I hold the police and their crime fighting interests in too high esteem LOL!

Have you opened a goods significantly not as described dispute in Ebay?

SushiMummy · 11/09/2007 12:40

Yes, I hope I did everything I could. I also have regrets that the seller has my email address.
