Right I've got a pram on ebay, its just ended (one of my coach prams) at £50

I have just received an email from a person who enquired about it a couple of days ago, she said she missed the end of the auction but has offered me £100 for it!

God what do I do???

Would you sell it for more and stand up the buyer (who is a shop) or what!

Bloody hell why is nothing ever easy!

Hilllary I don't know your personal circs, but IMO if you sell on eBay then you should play by the rules, otherwise you are deceiving and conning people

I presume you were glad to get the £50 before you were offered £100?

as a rare user of ebay I bid for something at Christmas. after winning it I regretted it for a couple of reasons. But I read up the stuff about contracts and realised it was tough. if you bid or offer you enter into a contract - not just according to ebay, but according to the law. I decided it wasn;t worth risking trying to withdraw.

iirc you're perfectly within your rights to ask the buyer if they would mind, but if they say no, they say no.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/05/2007 21:43

I was a bit startled on here to see the consensus was 'sod the rules, get what you can'. But that appears to be a common attitude.

Thankfully I've not run into it in my ebay transactions.

FrannyandZooey · 20/05/2007 21:43

If you don't know how to sell on eBay then do a boot sale or use the local paper

I don't believe that you didn't know you would have to sell to the highest bidder no matter what the winning bid was

NotQuiteCockney · 20/05/2007 21:44

(Oooh, I did once buy a TV and then realise it was probably too big. We tried repeatedly to set up a pick up appointment, anyway, and the seller never seemed to be around. So we just dropped it, and were happy.)

hatwoman · 20/05/2007 21:45

F and Z - in answer to your point about not knowing - I genuinely didn;t know the extent to which it was binding - my own fault, I should have found out, and when I did I played by the rules - just saying that it's posisble to buy/sell without realising the extent to which they;re binding

Hilllary · 20/05/2007 21:46

Speccy Its not that simple!

You have all these different catagories and listings and it baffles me!

I could see it was not doing well and tried to put a reserve on it but still coldnt find how to do it!

If I didnt need the money I wouldnt be selling the pram

You don't have any feedback at the moment - you really want to think this one through. It's going to look very bad if you have one negative feedback - the buyer has got high enough feedback to absorb a retaliatory neg from you.

It's not that easy to change your id with no trace of your previous. They do this to stop people with bad feedback just changing their id. I would really consider if you plan to sell or buy on ebay again. I could be overstating things but I wouldn't buy or sell to you with neg feedback and no positives. Sorry.

pinballwizard · 20/05/2007 21:47

i intended a cynical and ironic viewpoint...i wouldn't advise anyone to trade on ebay unless they are very sharp, it's just not worth it..but hey it's an opinion

It's a beautiful pram btw. I can absolutely see why you're annoyed.

FrannyandZooey · 20/05/2007 21:49

Hilllary if you did not understand what you were doing then it was a mistake to try to sell on eBay

you could have come on here and asked if you had wanted help with setting up the auction or anything like that

FrannyandZooey · 20/05/2007 21:51

Hatwoman, that does surprise me, because to place a bid you have to click on a button where it says that your bid is a binding agreement to pay for the item

it is quite hard to miss

anyway slap on the back for paying up when you realised

Wotzsaname · 20/05/2007 21:52

sorry Hillary but you have entered a contract.

see here

Ebay do offer the chance to opt for a reserve price (mim £ you would accept) if the winning bidder does not reach that price, only then do you not have to sell as the reserve price has not been met. See end link.

There is a small charge for this.

Don't sell anymore until you have read up.

So sorry. Also if it is a shop that has bought it, they will know all about the ebay T&C's , if you do't sell I expect they'll report you.

Don't want to sell your item below a certain price? Set a reserve price - About Reserve Price

Wotzsaname · 20/05/2007 21:52

If you have the other item with no bids, take it off NOW

I know you have reservations about eBay, but unfortunately rules are rules - even though the buyer is a shop, it may be a small business that's struggling - an acquaintance of mine ran a baby shop for a while before going out of business, it was very hard work for her - great shop, possibly wrong location but it was the best she could afford.

Check and double check before you do your next listing - I have been very lucky so far and not been scammed/had bad feedback but I am paranoid about checking the listings/rules.

I would also be v wary about the person offering £100 - I have been looking at coach prams over the last few days and just missed out on a Silver Cross Kensington yesterday for £167. Yours is lovely, but Marmet prams tend to go for less - how can you be sure the person is genuine?

Hilllary · 20/05/2007 21:56

Thanks Wotzername

My other item does have bids does that mean I cant pull it out? Can I not say it has been damaged to the bidders? I know it sounds immoral but I really dont want to go through this again!

Thanks for the links.

FrannyandZooey · 20/05/2007 21:57

Hilllary yes you can cancel the auction, ask if you need help doing this

I am sorry you have had a bad experience on eBay as it can be a great place when buyer and seller are both playing by the rules

FrannyandZooey · 20/05/2007 21:57

You can cancel their bids Hilllary

you can say "item no longer available for sale" and then end the auction

when is it ending?

Hilllary · 20/05/2007 21:58

Oh I think I'm just going to forget the lot of it
