Faded Item Described as Mint. What would you do?

DrowningEveryDay · 10/05/2018 23:45

I bought an item that was described as mint/store display. Since I really wanted it, I purchased it eventhough I knew I'd incur customs duty (the total was around $400 AUD with the GST, and the various fees - customs entrance, duty, broker fee, etc).

When the item arrived, I immediately noticed the fading in the collar and at the back.

What would you do if you were me? The jacket totalled around $950 US with the shipping (not including the customs fee). If I were to return, I will not get the customs duty back.

I messaged the seller but no reply yet.

By "vintage" I mean "vintage style" by the way

FesteringCarbuncle · 11/05/2018 07:59

I would just open a case
It obviously isn't mint so eBay will find in your favour and she will have to pay return postage. I guess at that stage she would likely offer a partial refund

Brendatheblender · 11/05/2018 08:10

I would raise a dispute with PayPal/eBay OP.

DrowningEveryDay · 11/05/2018 08:12

Can you find the original commercial listing eg was it described as vintage with Natural variation in colour?

No, it does not say that. The colour is "steel black".

One more thought: is there any tiny chance you touched this after delivery with sunscreen on your hands?

Nope. I did not touch it with sunscreen or anything on my hands.

DrowningEveryDay · 11/05/2018 08:13

Yeah, I think I will just open a case. Somebody in another forum said it might be a fake jacket. Now I am worried! It looks and smells like the new jacket I saw in a store but now it got me worried.

The marks are easy to see. The seller is not being truthful

nightwispa · 11/05/2018 09:05

Marks are clear to see. Ignore her sob story as it has nothing to do with the jacket. If the jacket fits like a dream and everything else about it is perfect, ask for a partial refund. Then take the jacket to a dry cleaners and get the faded patches fixed. My local dry cleaners re-dyed a very (very) faded suede jacket and it looked better than it did when it was new!

DrowningEveryDay · 11/05/2018 09:13

Seller is now claiming the item I am showing is not the item she sent me!!!

19lottie82 · 11/05/2018 09:44

Hmm she’s chancing her arm. Just open a return request. If you do want a partial refund then ask for one once you’ve done that.

DrowningEveryDay · 11/05/2018 09:48

Yeah, I opened a return request and that's what her reply is.

"I am sorry that you are unhappy with your purchase, Jacket had no markings or discoloration when it was mailed to you, I am not able to accept a return as we State clearly we do not accept returns. If considered you would be solely responsible for return shipment, I will find exact receipt but I am quite certain it was $87 to ship your item Express, well above the 65 I quoted however I did not expect you to pay the difference I just wanted to get it to you safe and sound and in good condition.. I would also appreciate a comparable photo of the full jacket hanging like the photos in my listing, the pictures you are showing me does not even look like my item, I did not sell a brand new item full of blemishes and not see them, my pictures are clear and precise. Sorry"

My reply:

"New pictures uploaded. eBay confirmed that the seller needs to organise a return because I am able to provide pictures of the item showing the discolouration. If you need help or assistance on how to resolve this, please contact eBay."

Oh. eBay bingo. Random mention of relative's cancer (but not so heartbroken you can't be doing auction listings. Selective blindness. Now you've imagined up a replacement jacket simply in order to scam her.

If you could live with the marks, write back saying 'this is my final suggestion: repay me x by way of partial refund.' Remind her that she would presumably have to pay incoming customs fees all over again if you send it back. And if she balks at that, it seems your only option is to raise the dispute with eBay, tell them everything she has said.

Bummer all round really. Shock

friskybivalves · 11/05/2018 09:51

I see her latest reply. Suddenly sounds quite forensic in her phrasing - far cry from the emotional stuff she tried first off. And now it's 'we' don't accept returns. Is it an eBay business?

Is she still saying she can't see the discoloration or has she now moved on to 'it's not my jacket anyway'?

theeyeofthestormchaser · 11/05/2018 09:57

I am away, my mom has stage 3 lung cancer, I never ship without global ship coverage, I have to say I am so upset

Grin

eBay bingo! Always someone has cancer Hmm

OP, sounds like you're not going to get far with this seller. The marks are clear on your pics. Go through ebay. Suggest a partial refund and try the dye PPS have mentioned. Good luck!

(There's a difference between an item being 'mint' and 'store display'. If it's ex-display, it could have been sat in the sun for years, been touched or tried on by people. Not mint!)

DrowningEveryDay · 11/05/2018 09:58

If you could live with the marks,

I was initially open to a partial refund but now I am so annoyed.

Is she still saying she can't see the discoloration or has she now moved on to 'it's not my jacket anyway'?

It seems now she can see the discoloration but claims that the jacket isn't what she sent me.

So people really do this on eBay? OMG. So weird. And so freaky. I mean, if it's true then what does it have to do with the transaction. If it's not true and just an excuse...well...

I am not able to accept a return as we State clearly we do not accept returns.

Why don’t sellers realise that this only covers where the buyer changes their mind and not where the item isn’t as described? I wish eBay would make this clearer to sellers.

I bought an expensive item that didn’t work and the seller was initially “bring it on - I stated in my listing that I don’t accept returns”.

I processed the refund through eBay and got my money back, obviously.

Hi Drowning,

Thank you for getting back to us.

We have not seen this kind of issue in our Mock jackets, but it can be likely if the person you bought it from used some harsh cleaning chemicals in addition to leaving the jacket out to hang where it is exposed to the sun. There could be a number of reasons for these issues arising but we haven't seen this kind of spotting in any of our Mock styles (where there is no human intervention).

The kind of issues/wear that we would see may be some fading due to long time use or perhaps continuous abrasion of the leather - but not discoloration in the leather.

I would recommend for you to let the eBay seller know and perhaps try to return the jacket if you are unhappy with it - especially if she has sold the jacket to you without informing you of this defect.

I also would recommend to purchase Acne Studios from reputable and authoriszed wholesalers or from our stores directly. With private market places like eBay, it can never be guaranteed that the products you buy are authentic. With purchases through us directly or with our wholesalers, you will have the peace of mind that the products are genuine and you will have customer care and after sales care if you have any problems with the purchase.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

Have a great day!
Kind regards,
Amanda

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face. If eBay says you can return it, how much will you lose?

So she's changed her tune re the discolouration Hmm She's trying it on.

I have no idea why they do that, but they do. To gain sympathy? So you just go 'oh well, never mind then, I'll just keep my faulty/not as described item and you can go and fleeece someone else?'

If she's posting things for sale, then she can't be that upset at her mum's cancer. And it's completely irrelevant.

theeyeofthestormchaser · 11/05/2018 10:06

Good reply from ACNE - I thought it was the sun!

nauticant · 11/05/2018 10:13

So people really do this on eBay?

Yes, the correlation between selling on eBay and the seller or a close family member having cancer is so strong that the government really needs to slap a health warning on the site. There's a Nobel Prize in Medicine waiting for someone over this.

DrowningEveryDay · 11/05/2018 10:13

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face. If eBay says you can return it, how much will you lose?

$400 for the customs fees.

I am of course bummed but I am more annoyed at this seller now, as I have tried to reach out to her and I just got 1) sob story + claim she can't see fading and now 2) I'm showing her a different jacket!

Yeah, I am surprised by the lengthy reply since I did not purchase the item from them or their authorised wholesaler. I think I am now a fan of ACNE!

I've just caught up after my run Halo and can now confirm seller is a cheeky thieving fucker. And their handling of this matter is not ok.

When in Oz I had one eBay "wrongly described" item for about $500 from Thailand (no customs fees at stake). Seller was mortified, refunded me before she'd even got the item back, insisted that I kept the gift she'd sent me to compensate for inconvenience (worth about $40) and paid me express courier fees for the return within an hour of my raising the issue.

And I even found that quite stressful(!), so am no good at advice for you here unfortunately, but Flowers

LostMyBaubles · 11/05/2018 10:25

Did you pay via PayPal?
If so open a case with them
They do give you an option to ask for partial refund etc once the case is going

Ebay should be more helpful too Confused

ItsNachoCheese · 11/05/2018 10:26

Some sellers on ebay can be really shitty. I got a gift set for my df for his christmas and the box was all ripped yet seller said it was fine Hmm
