Ebay return for not as described, seller refusing, high value item

AliBingo · 10/05/2018 13:54

I just bought a ring for over £300 and it is not as described, the stone is not as large as the seller said, they don't accept returns and so I have requested a return as it was not as described.

But now the seller (who has very low amount of feedback so possibly a new seller or newly reregistered seller) is saying no, she is saying it was as described.

I feel sick to the stomach at wasting the money and am stressing about what to do next if she refuses to accept the return. Apparently I can escalate to eBay but if it is her word against mine, how will they mediate/decide what to do?

I have nearly 400 feedbacks on eBay and have never experienced this situation before.

I'd welcome any advice or comments, thanks.

Did the pictures/description accurately describe the item? I would escalate through eBay, if it is nothing like the description you have a good case.

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/05/2018 13:56

Ebay almost always finds in favour of the buyer, open a dispute and try not to stress.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 10/05/2018 13:57

She has to accept the return, she can not refuse and if she does eBay will automatically accept the return.

AliBingo · 10/05/2018 14:07

Thanks for the replies. She has now told me to post the item back. Shouldn't she be accepting my return request so eBay generates a label/tracking/process though rather than just saying send it back?

Argh I regret buying this now!

Yes it is definitely significantly not as described.

Yes do not post the item back without her accepting the return!

AliBingo · 10/05/2018 14:24

Great thanks

Posts above are correct. DO NOT post it back until you have an official ebay generated returns label.

Message her (keeping all communication through the resolution Centre) asking her to formally accept the return and send you a returns label.

If she doesn’t just get ebay to step in and help once the 7 (?) days has passed since you opened the return request and they will sort it out for you.

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 10/05/2018 14:47

As per 19lottie and others, get her to authorise return thus generating an official returns label. If she won't, escalate the problem through ebay.

I am in process of returning a purchase too (my first in 100+transactions) and from what I have read (trying to ease my own fears), ebay seem heavily weighted towards being on the side of the buyer so I have little doubt you will get your money back.

AliBingo · 10/05/2018 16:59

Thanks for all the advice. Seller has now accepted my return request.

It seems like I need them to send me a post label/address label now and I am good to go!

Glad it's been accepted. Think I had a returns label sent through from eBay once the seller had accepted it. I bought a size 10 dress that was actually an 8!

milleniumhandandprawn · 10/05/2018 19:10

Also send it recorded delivery!

19lottie82 · 10/05/2018 21:24

Also send it recorded delivery!

No need. That’s what the pre paid return label is for (it’s a tracked service).

AliBingo · 10/05/2018 22:13

The seller has messaged me asking me to send it recorded delivery, she says the eBay system wouldn't let her specify that. The label says 48 hour tracked.

OP posts:
Crispbutty · 10/05/2018 22:20

You need to make sure it is covered for upto the value of the item. Send it 48hour tracked as per the label.

Crispbutty · 10/05/2018 22:22

Signed for only covers upto £50

19lottie82 · 10/05/2018 23:51

You don’t need to send it recorded delivery. The label provides a tracked service which protects the buyer and seller. On the off chance Royal Mail were to lose the parcel, eBay would refund both parties.

As it’s generated by eBay the moment the parcel is sent, it’s journey is tracked via eBay also - this saves you having to upload any tracking details ect, yourself.

It just sounds like the seller doesn’t really understand how the pre paid return works.

19lottie82 · 10/05/2018 23:52

You need to make sure it is covered for up to the value of the item

No, the OP doesn’t.

cone · 11/05/2018 16:41

Could you take a photo of the item with a coin or ruler next to it, to show its actual size?

AliBingo · 23/05/2018 00:10

Thanks again for all the advice. The seller signed for the return a few days ago and had until today to refund my £365. They have not issued a refund or been in touch so I have escalated to eBay. Am really stressing that I'll lose the money. This has really put me off buying on eBay!

OP posts:
ZeroFuchsGiven · 23/05/2018 07:53

Ebay will refund you, don't worry. Please don't let one bad experience put you off using ebay, there are genuine sellers like me out there who will go above and beyond to help buyers out Smile

Hellbentwellwent · 23/05/2018 08:05

Escalate and don’t stress. She’s being a cockwomble and either doesn’t know how to sell properly in ebay it is trying it on. Either way you’ve done everything right.

Have you messaged her to ask why you haven’t received the refund?

UpperWallop · 23/05/2018 08:08

Fret not, you will definitely get the money back.

AliBingo · 23/05/2018 10:11

Thanks for your comments. It's just stressful until I have the money back! Interestingly seller has relisted item but has altered the title and description to a smaller size as per what I complained about, so perhaps they realise they did misdescribe it. So even stranger that they haven't refunded.

Thanks again for all your help. I am pleased to report that Ebay found in my favour, phew! I am sooo relieved. I know they should have done really but I was still just a bit scared I might lose my money. I am still puzzled as to why the seller wouldn't have refunded too. Anyway, glad the kerfuffle is now over!
