Help - what to do? The bidding has gone too HIGH on my item for sale!

I listed an 'Outdoor Toy' (don't want to say what in case anyone is bidding on it!) which we've had for a couple of years, having bought it locally for £15.

It's been well-loved, and so I was pretty honest in the description (e.g. it's got scuffs and this is missing etc....). However DH thinks the photo I took was 'forgiving' (although not misleading in any way...

Anyway we thought we might get a tenner for it, but it's now been bid up to £40 with still over a day to go, and loads of watchers.

DH thinks when the winner comes round to collect it we should let them have it for a lower amount - what do you think?

Thing is, you can buy a similar new one for £39.99!!

Are you mad? If this is what they are willing to pay for it then that's what it's worth to them. No one is forcing them to bid on it, or twisting their arm pay that much. You should be happy! Take the money and enjoy it. If you feel that guilty about it, you can always donate some of it to charity.

Gameboy · 26/04/2007 09:48

I think DH is worried some hairy lorry driver type will come round to collect it and beat him up when he sees it....

Agree - DP sold an unused still shrinkwrapped DVD on ebay for more than it cost to buy from Play.com...

melpomene · 26/04/2007 09:53

If you have been honest in your description, then the price bid should be binding. It's the buyer's responsibility to decide how much the item is worth and to check how much it would cost new.

KTeePee · 26/04/2007 09:53

We sold a second hand dishwasher recently and I was at how much it went for - we would have been happy with £10-20 tbh to get it taken off our hands but it went for considerably more than that....I was also worried that the buyer would change their minds when they saw it but so far so good.....

usandnosleep · 26/04/2007 09:54

Is it too late to add more pics? Or can you email some?

NotanOtter · 26/04/2007 09:54

lets see it then!

cathcart · 26/04/2007 09:55

take your money!

Marne · 26/04/2007 09:57

We were looking for a little tikes car last year on e-bay and they seem to sell for more 2nd hand than new. As long as you have described it well then i would'nt worry. Enjoy the money.

serenity · 26/04/2007 09:58

Don't worry about things until they happen - if the buyer comes around and whinges then offer some money (£5 maybe) off the price, but don't borrow trouble in the meantime.

pinknfluffy29 · 26/04/2007 09:59

if its a little tikes item they go for loads in any state - dont worry youv'e been honest and people know that cameras dont take exceptionally good pictures. i had a pair of next shoes that cost me 3 quid in the sale go for £37 - love ebay sometimes lol!!!

Nemo2007 · 26/04/2007 09:59

ohh do a link to your item or give us your ebay name...ado agree people get carried away on ebay have had some stuff sell for ridiculous amounts.

nogoes · 26/04/2007 10:00

Why do things go for so much? I bought ds a cheap chair & table set from IKEA for £12. I have seen them on EBAY for £40! Who buys this stuff?

throckenholt · 26/04/2007 10:02

when considering givng the buyer a discount don't forget that you will be paying fees to ebay on whatever the final price actually is.

I agree with the others though - if you described it fairly it is not your fault if idiots want to bid high for it.

suwoo · 26/04/2007 10:02

Don't worry about it, it happens all the time-people are mad!! I just sold a 2nd had pair of girls birkis for £29!!! Just because I still had the box. People don't research first. Have fun with the money!

MrsWho · 26/04/2007 13:05

I sold some of those free dvds for £10.71 and the buyer was really pleased

LIZS · 26/04/2007 13:08

Caveat emptor

kittypants · 26/04/2007 13:09

i think people that bid more for 2nd hand than new are people that cant find it new.

brimfull · 26/04/2007 13:11

please please tell us what it is,I maight have one lurking that I can sell.

willywonka · 26/04/2007 13:15

Sure that people think "oh it's on ebay, so it must be cheap" without bothering to do a quick check elsewhere. It's their loss & you should definitely not feel bad just because some people are not very bright.

LadyMacbeth · 26/04/2007 13:16

I once sold a (used for two years) IKEA duvet cover for £65. It cost me £20 new! I felt really guilty but people are mad for them as they were designed (I think) by Cath Kidston.

KTeePee · 26/04/2007 14:11

Was that the pink one with flowers on one side and polka dots on the other?

Housemum · 26/04/2007 14:35

The winning buyer has entered a contract so you have law on your side. We sold an item (won't go into details in case the buyer is on here!) that we had bought 10 years previously - we sold it for £20 more than we bought it for, and new ones were available at the price they paid. We had been 100% honest in the description, and had even added a photo of a damaged bit so the buyer knew what they were bidding on. They turned up, paid up and collected - no questions at all, received positive feedback afterwards. So don't panic!

If they say anything when they arrive, just remind them that they did bid on it, and it is as described - you could offer them a fiver off, or if you think they will give you scummy feedback you may want to risk saying to them that they can leave it, then doing a second chance offer to the next highest bidder and hope they take it from you.

DarrellRivers · 26/04/2007 14:45

we sold our 6 m old lawnmower for the sameprice as could be bought new.
buyer was so chuffed with it as well
takes all sorts in the world you know
i get sleepless nights selling things on ebay, what if it stops working as soon as the buyer takes it , what if buyer is drug dealer/hairy knuckled truck driver and will steal item or give me fake notes etc.
stopped doing it now, sometimes would rather just give it away to a friend

PrettyCandles · 26/04/2007 14:48

Maybe what you're not aware of is that it's a rare limited edition collector's item...? .
