eBay return - sending back a different item!

I recently sold a pair of new boots for £100 on eBay (highly sought after) and the buyer was new with 0 feedback. I had my reservations but as they had paid, I sent the item signed for but to cover my back, took photos of the boots before I sent them off. The photos are dated and shows no marks / shows the boots has tags on etc

The buyer has requested a return on the basis that they are damaged & the wrong size! I have pics to prove otherwise and she is obviously going to send me back her damaged pair and keep my new pair

What do I do?

Hope not OP.

Za1ny · 29/09/2017 21:56

I hope not too, especially as the boots were very nice, but just a bit too high.

I'm put off selling on eBay now as well. I definitely will never send anything to a new eBayer ever again!

But you said previously eBay told you not to accept the return, after the date passes they will step in. So no you shouldn't have sent them the returns label. Besides, they could still have returned them without that, on their own back, as long as they would have kept the receipt as proof of delivering to your address. So sounds like buyer had no intentions of returning. But you didn't accept the return, so why would they return them if you didn't accept it? Hmm it's a funny one OP.
Did you accept the return yesterday & send returns label?
They are defo up to no good, and sounds like a scammer. Let's hope they don't return them.
But I'm not sure what's going to happen as you didn't accept the return anyway.
Let us know what happens once ebay step in.

Ebay won't get you to refund without recieving the boots back first but if the buyer asked them to step in they will now force the return, i.e. Send a label on your behalf Which you will be charged for and you will get a defect on your account.

19lottie82 · 30/09/2017 09:59

woodhill, because unfortunately, thats the way ebay works.

Za1ny · 30/09/2017 10:56

The thing is because the buyer has claimed the item was significantly not as described, I do have to accept the return. Ebays advice would mean a defect on my account and im sure they would eventually get me to accept her return as they always side with buyers. I was fiddling around with the return claim and clicked on 'accept return' to see if there was any additional information and the return got accepted! There was no confirmation or anything...

I'm just going to forget about it until I hear back from eBay. Too much headache!

Hi OP, just remember if they do send an alternate item back, the buck doesn't stop with eBay / PayPal if they decide on the buyers favour, the small claims court is your friend, or usually just the threat of it.
I'm quite a stubborn cow so if someone ripped me off for an item worth £100 I wouldn't think twice about sending a letter before action and following through with the threat if it was ignored.

Za1ny · 30/09/2017 12:35

Hi thanks for that! I will definitely look into that if she sends a different item back and eBay side with her. Thanks, I would not have thought of that myself!

It's so wrong though Lottie

19lottie82 · 30/09/2017 21:23

I'm not actually sure if it would be ebay or the buyer who you would take action against, but I'm sure you could hold one of them responsible.

TheDiamondMumcrafter · 01/10/2017 19:21

Have you heard anything back from eBay yet OP?

Za1ny · 01/10/2017 19:53

Nothing yet

OP posts:
19lottie82 · 02/10/2017 09:38

No OP, because if you didn't ebay would have issued her with one anyway and you would have got a defect.

I would however send her a final message telling her that if she does send a different item back you won't hesitate to file a money claim with the small claims court for the cost of the item and your expenses.

Any news?

Za1ny · 17/10/2017 11:56

No news yet... They've given her until this week to provide tracking details but I've not heard anything back yet. Will update as soon as I hear anything!

She's running out of time to do it through eBay. It's 30 days from when it arrived. Or, so many days after a case has opened. There is the paypal route yes, 180 days or something, but that's harder than going through just ebay.

Za1ny · 17/10/2017 20:32

If she provided tracking details would eBay have told me about it by now? I'm hoping she's not sent the boots back and runs out of time...

OP posts:
19lottie82 · 17/10/2017 22:14

Hi OP, yes eBay will tell you when / if she sends it and provide you with tracking details. If she marks it as sent and there isn't a tracking number then it hasn't been, when using the returns label it automatically uploads to the eBay record as soon as it's scanned by the post office.

My advice at this stage would be to sit back and keep quiet, if you contact eBay they may give her another nudge to send the return. If you don't do anything the request will time out eventually and will be closed in your favour.

Za1ny · 17/10/2017 22:29

Hi thanks for that. She has a few more days left so I really hope she doesn't send them back!

OP posts:
ImaLannister · 18/10/2017 00:26

This started ages ago. I don't think she is going to send them back. You scared her off by calling her bluff I reckon, by saying you can prove they wasn't damaged etc. I'd ease off on the worrying. You've heard nothing...this is a great sign!

Bendyandtheinkmachine · 18/10/2017 23:54

Did the buyer leave you any feedback?

Za1ny · 20/10/2017 10:03

She's not left any feedback and she's not sent the item back - the time limit eBay have given her has now passed. The money from the transaction is still on hold and it's still showing as an open return. Just waiting to see what eBay say now!

OP posts:
19lottie82 · 20/10/2017 16:04

The return request will close out in 30 days from when it was opened.

Za1ny · 22/10/2017 00:13

It's been over 30 days and it's still open so I'm not too sure what's going on. the buyer hasn't got her money back yet it's still pending, I'm just going to wait and see what eBay say.
The only thing I am worried about is when she sent the return request, the address that was showing was my old address and she might lie and say she sent it to that?! But surely I would have got a message informing me that the return has been sent.

Hi

Just thought I'd let you all know, I got back my money today! I didn't follow anything up, just left it and I'd read online that the longest they can keep a return open is 6 weeks. Today is 6 weeks since she opened the return and I've got my money back. I'm hoping she doesn't go through PayPal but yayy very happy about the outcome
