Help! That buyer IS dodgy. I knew it!

I am new to Ebaying. I sold a pair of shoes (£65) and the buyer wanted to collect in person and pay through Paypal. She paid via Paypal but after posters on here said not to allow collection, I posted the parcel this morning (tracked) and cancelled the meet-up pleading an emergency.

Anyway, just now I have had the following message:

i received today a.parcel with a plate, via hermes. wrong name on the parcel. i only expect your shoes so perhaps this is your plate? and shoes were posted to some other person? many thanks.

My parcel couldn't have arrived that fast (Royal Mail) and I paid to get it tracked and it says it is on it's way.

I feel so uneasy about this transaction, is there anything I can do?

She should have done what she considered was inappropriate in the circumstances. Not what people demand on mumsnet.

sleeponeday · 23/04/2015 14:33

And to everyone casually mentioning how often they open other people's mail: don't, it is against the law.

It is against the law to open, destroy, hide or delay any post that is addressed to someone else. The Postal Services Act.

I absolutely and sincerely promise you that no policeman will ever knock on my door to take steps against me for accidentally opening the odd misdirected piece of mail. That law is to prevent malicious or fraudulent events, not a genuine mistake. We get a lot of parcels as I shop online and I tend to open with one eye on the baby and one on DS. It's very rare that they're not for me, but if so, no biggie - I just return to sender.

But your concern is appreciated. Grin

Have you heard back from her? Did you check the tracking number to see if the shoes were delivered anywhere?

I haven't a lot to do today, clearly...

StupidBloodyKindle · 23/04/2015 14:59

I will play devil's advocate and say ywnbu...I say that, wanting to think the best of everyone, but having had my fingers burnt several times (only difference being I was a buyer) am somewhat cynical now.
I once received a toy mouse instead of a toy shield in a huge envelope and signed for it without thinking. As the cost of return was the same as the cost of item in the first place I am sure they thought I would not bother for a refund...I bloody well sent it tracked back on principle.

I don't think you're crazy op Smile,
Something fishy about it isn't there?

glammanana · 23/04/2015 17:00

Any news about the delivery we are all waiting with baited breath for up-date.Smile

TakeYourFinalPosition · 23/04/2015 17:04

AddToBasket It's not illegal to open someone else's post unless you intend to behave maliciously with the contents.

I have no idea if your buyer is dodgy - they've screwed it up if they were trying to be, getting the courier wrong! - but they won't be arrested for opening someone else's plates.

It has been delivered. Someone signed for it at 12.49.

do you not put your senders details on the parcel?

LaurieFairyCake · 23/04/2015 21:21

The parcel was delivered the same day by Royal Mail?

Are you quite sure?

I don't get why posters are trying to catch out the OP:

I wasn't trying to catch her out at all.

I read the thread and thought it had all happened today, posting and delivery. Grin

Good that it's now been delivered and wasn't anything to do with the Hermes one yesterday

Jeez --needa- basketcase I thought you were bonkers enough on the other thread.
Sell shoes, person asks to pick up. Buyer assumes cash on collection. You give only a partial address and make it difficult for her to collect. You keep asking for paypal Because you think by paying cash the buyer is money laundering. She complies with this request, expecting to come round and pick up shoes at a pre arranged time.
You then realise what people advised you, that paypal is a bad idea with picked up goods. So you lie about an emergency to get out of the pickup appt, and post the item by some expensive tracked means.
she replies with a sympathetic comment about your pretend emergency and you think that makes her dodgy and scammy???
You've even been on amazon to check the weight of plates to feed your conspiracy theory ????
I buy shoes from eBay occasionally. If you'd been a buyer you'd have got a whopping great NEG for messing me around.

MadameJulienBaptiste · 24/04/2015 14:22

Gah. Witty suggested name change fail.

Confused I had to take my dog to the vet. As it happens, I took my dog to the vet. The 'expensive tracked means' was the one that she bid on in the listing. Except it was free to her, as I paid it because I had cancelled the pick up. Can't really see that she can grumble about that, and I have no idea why you are.

I had a very irate message from a buyer saying goods were not as described. Turns out someone had sent him a free gift as compensation for another breakage which ironically was similar to the goods (but not in as good condition) as the items I had sold him. All I am saying is that it can happen innocently. They did apologize profusely when the parcel I sent arrived.

GeneHuntsMistress · 23/05/2015 11:23

Just reading through this thread and dying to know what happened in the end - did she receive the item? And what happened with The Plate? Any news op?

GrrrrrBear · 23/05/2015 11:39

I'm curious to know what happened too
