Help! That buyer IS dodgy. I knew it!

I am new to Ebaying. I sold a pair of shoes (£65) and the buyer wanted to collect in person and pay through Paypal. She paid via Paypal but after posters on here said not to allow collection, I posted the parcel this morning (tracked) and cancelled the meet-up pleading an emergency.

Anyway, just now I have had the following message:

i received today a.parcel with a plate, via hermes. wrong name on the parcel. i only expect your shoes so perhaps this is your plate? and shoes were posted to some other person? many thanks.

My parcel couldn't have arrived that fast (Royal Mail) and I paid to get it tracked and it says it is on it's way.

I feel so uneasy about this transaction, is there anything I can do?

Yeah, I agree, and I went for Paypal/Post which to be fair was what I'd listed. And she got the postage for free as I had cancelled her Collection in Person.

I am really surprised you all think I am over reacting about the plate. Perhaps lots of people get parcels addressed for others, open them, then connect them to someone else who has apparently no connection at all. Confused

She received a parcel, thought it was from you and opened it and then found it contained something different so queried it with you. Why is that odd? She sounds inexperienced and naive as opposed to a scammer!

Why didn't you charge postage when you listed the item?

millionsmom · 23/04/2015 12:22

Sorry to buck the trend, but it sounds dodgy to me too.
If a parcel addressed to someone else turned up at my house, I certainly wouldn't have opened it! I simply wouldn't have signed/accepted it and it would've been sent back by Hermes.

I'm with you Add.

NeedABumChange · 23/04/2015 12:24

I have received and accidentally opened parcels for other people. I get a lot and never used to check the front so just open automatically. My address is "x way" and I have received 2 parcels for "x road" which is actually about a mile away.
We also get a lot of wrongly delivered parcels at my work addressed to people with odd names who have nothing to do with us.

Cherryapple1 · 23/04/2015 12:29

I never check the name on a parcel either. And lots of Hermes couriers just leave in the porch or a shed and don't ask for a signature. Mine doesn't bother v often as many sellers don't pay the extra for the signature.

Spamminit · 23/04/2015 12:32

I would be suspicious too. I am constantly hearing of people paying by paypal and then collecting in person and saying you haven't posted it. You have done the right thing OP

LadyDeadpool · 23/04/2015 12:36

Do you suffer this badly from paranoia all the time? I've received several packages and letters addressed to someone else who I presume used to live at my address. If I was you I'd be making a Dr's appointment to discuss my paranoia.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 23/04/2015 12:41

I don't understand your point about the tracking and weight.

You have a royal mail receipt for Yahoo urged parcel with tracking number xyz. Your parcel also has tracking number xyz on it.

The buyer has a hermes parcel with tracking number 123, so it's clearly not your parcel and you can prove it because your royal mail receipt says xyz.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 23/04/2015 12:42

"Yahoo urged" is supposed to say "your". Don't know what happened there. Hmm

Cherryapple1 · 23/04/2015 12:44

Spam - you are right about collected items, so why not just refund and ask for cash. Then none of this hassle or expense or comeback.

parsnipbob · 23/04/2015 12:50

Randomly wading in here but last week I received a pair of shoes (Skechers size 6) from Hermes when I was expecting cups and saucers and plates?! Also ordered off eBay. Think Hermes mixed up the labels but they are refusing to do anything about it as I signed for the Skechers, which I never ordered. eBay seller is as confused as I am.

AddToBasket · 23/04/2015 12:54

I did charge for postage. I removed it from invoice when she asked to collect in person.

The point about the weight is this: A parcel containing e.g. Denby plate weighs (according to amazon) 0.780kg. A parcel containing boxed shoes weighs (according to my Royal Mail receipt) 0.760kg. Whether I had sent a plate or shoes my proof of postage would look the same. i.e. It is proof that I posted something but she can tell Paypal she received a plate not shoes and that I must have made a mistake.

BTW, thanks to all the people who said I'm not crazy!

And surely it isn't usual for a buyer to expect SAME DAY courier delivery?

sleeponeday · 23/04/2015 12:55

I don't check names before opening mail to this address either. And people with cash on collection often pay via Paypal - I refund and explain it needs to be cash only as I can't comply with their terms without tracked online proof of delivery.

It's perfectly sensible to trust your instincts about a buyer, I agree. But no need to panic here. You said yourself that she says the wrong parcel was via Hermes, and you sent Royal Mail Special Delivery which will show a delivery date after her message to you about the plate. So you'd win any Paypal dispute on these facts. If she's a scammer, she's a hopelessly inept one.

sleeponeday · 23/04/2015 12:56

And imagining someone that inept will know how much your packed shoes weigh, as opposed to how much a plate does, is rather reaching.

NeedABumChange · 23/04/2015 12:58

Your proof of postage will look different as yours is Royal Mail and the parcel is Hermes! If she was conning you she'd have seen you'd posted RM and be claiming to find a RM parcel.

And some couriers are same dy. she expecting a parcel and one turns up so of course just assumes it's the right one. It's not that weird.

Cherryapple1 · 23/04/2015 13:13

But the tracking for the Hermes parcel is nothing to do with your transaction so bears no relevance whatsoever? How would eBay link the two? It won't effect you at all will it? Am so confused as to why you think this is an issue?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 23/04/2015 13:16

Oh I'm glad you said it was Denby. I'm waiting for a plate from myHermes but it's an Emma Bridgewater plate. Phew. Grin

I've had four parcels today. I've actually just gone and checked that they are for me and not a random neighbour. I haven't had time to open them all yet.

She's obviously just a bit dim. She's had the wrong parcel delivered but assumed it came from you. Bit daft to open it without checking it's actually for you.

Psipsina · 23/04/2015 13:30

Don't be suspicious. Assume the best in this scenario, you have your bases covered. She sounds bonkers but not unpleasant.

Cherryapple1 · 23/04/2015 13:33

I still don't understand why you didn't ask her to pay postage before you sent it?

AddToBasket · 23/04/2015 13:42

I was cancelling Collect in Person so I felt that the postage would be on me. It was just a gesture assuming it was all in good faith; if she was in bad faith then paying it was worth it to protect myself.

OP posts:
TarkaTheOtter · 23/04/2015 13:44

She's not a very good con artist though, is she? If she opens a case against you, you can just prove that all this plate bollocks started before your parcel was delivered by comparing the dates on her email and your proof of delivery.

AddToBasket · 23/04/2015 13:45

And to everyone casually mentioning how often they open other people's mail: don't, it is against the law.

It is against the law to open, destroy, hide or delay any post that is addressed to someone else. The Postal Services Act.

OP posts:
AddToBasket · 23/04/2015 13:46

Tarka, yeah, that's my DH's view. He thinks she's a crap lazy conartist who does this so often that she didn't check which courier I used and didn't wait 24hrs til she received my package. Clearly, she's buying shoes elsewhere too!

OP posts:
Cherryapple1 · 23/04/2015 13:59

No it isn't always against the law.

You should have asked her for extra to post it tbh.
