Selling all your old stuff to pay for Christmas?

If you fancy it, pop in and say hello.

I am starting today and have done some listings - am aiming for £300 after fees to pay for the DC's Christmas pressies.

Hi
Not too bad for me this weekend. I have 4 items to post today which went for about £80 plus a few bids on things. I am hoping to get a few more items listed today. I am going back into the loft! My items to post today were all BIN btw. I do a mixture of BIN and auction and I also wait for FLW and relist, sticking to at least my minimum acceptable amount which I lower if something seems to really not be shifting. I have found most things eventually sell for an ok amount.

Tortoise · 17/11/2014 14:04

I've got masses listed and nothing is selling! All BIN listings. So skint this week, desperate for some to sell.

Dumbledoresgirl · 17/11/2014 17:01

I think my overall total profit is about £175. I wanted to get up to £200. It might still happen but I admit I am getting a bit bored with ebay now. I have free listings today and tomorrow so I thought I would list a few new things tomorrow and then not make too much further effort this side of Christmas.

Am I selling rubbish at over inflated prices, or is ebay generally much less of a thing than it used to be? I remember Oct and Nov being manic in previous years.

fairisledog · 17/11/2014 22:38

OMG - things have taken off today.

Listed some kids VHS videos using the free listings and batched them up in 3's so people get max value out of one postage amount (

Tortoise · 17/11/2014 23:25

I went through reducing prices by 50p/£1 here and there. Sold 3 things tonight. Need to make about £40 to cover fees before profit (business account) No wonder I'm not making much money!

fairisledog · 21/11/2014 12:45

Have exceeded my original target due to getting over £10 for the nativity play costume and silly money for some old kids VHS videos, Thomas the Tank Engine being ever popular. Thanks heavens some people can still play videos instead of dvds.

Will extend my target to £300 I think rather than rest on my laurels as I still have some big toys to list and people may be skint after Christmas.

Does ebay buying normally drop off after Christmas I wonder ?

Tortoise · 21/11/2014 14:20

So skint this week and really need stuff to sell.
What videos sold well? We have loads, I thought they weren't worth selling.

glammanana · 21/11/2014 15:21

I'm not doing too bad these past two weeks my sales have risen to just over £300 after this months fee's paid,so I'll have a bit over what I first estimated,I intend to save it towards holiday fund and not blow it on stuff not needed in fact I am going to be ruthless and watch it mount up.
Tortoise Video's seem to sell very well so get some listed when a free week-end is on again you never know you could have just what people are looking for ? lots of people still have players and can't afford DVD's there are some good classic's I'm sure.

fairisledog · 21/11/2014 16:19

Tortoise

I thought they wouldn't sell too but it seems quite a few people can still play them.

I've sold kids ones in batches of 3 (the total weight of 3 falls in the

Tortoise · 21/11/2014 23:04

EBay decided because I sold similar stuff on both accounts I wasn't allowed to do that and the limited my non business account to buying only (now sits unused!) I tried arguing that they were business items on one and personal on the other. Not sure if it's worth paying 30p listing fee for a few quid. It's so annoying missing out on free listings.
Not sure what videos we have. DDs still watch Disney ones. I know there's tweenies. Could never get rid of spider! Iove it lol.

Dumbledoresgirl · 23/11/2014 17:36

Wow, who knew videos still sell? I either charity shopped mine or possibly took them to the local dump Blush I am struggling to sell a few dvds for £3 each (and that includes p&p).

On the plus side, I have had an ok week. I have reached my target of £200! I am not exactly sure, but I think I currently stand at £226. Grin

Thanks for the tip re dressing gowns fairisledog. I have had a couple lying around for ages. I have listed them both. Neither have sold yet, despite a cheeky offer from someone, but they are attracting more interest than many of my items.

Tortoise · 23/11/2014 19:57

I'm seriously considering putting everything back on at 99p when it ends and just seeing what happens! I had a lovely little dress on BIN, 9 watchers, unsold!

fairisledog · 26/11/2014 04:35

Hauled another box of discarded/outgrown toys down from the loft last night and set the alarm for 4.15 am to get photographing and listing (Addicted.....who, me ?) to maximise the Christmas buying window, particularly as I want to offload some more Christmas themed items.

Have just found (by researching a suitable start price on e-bay) that one of the items I propose to sell is quite rare and a collectors item now as it was sent as a birthday gift by relatives in the USA and was not available in the UK.

The 2 identical (but not in as good condition as ours) items for sale are in the USA so expensive on postage.

I'm thinking start price of £25 ? Who knew this stuff could be so valuable ! If it sells for that I'll have exceeded my target by £50, although Christmas shopping is now whittling down the paypal balance a little

All dressing gowns now sold plus some slippers but PJs not doing so well due to a predominance of less desirable patterns/prints thereon (presents to the kids from a slightly odd Auntie). Think many will end up at the charity shop/Women's refuge.

I'm eyeing up an almost empty bookcase that used to hold a lot of children's books, videos and dvds which have mostly been all sold and wondering if I could sell it as surplus to requirements now.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 26/11/2014 14:44

Wow, fairisle, that's dedication!!! Grin

I'm losing a little enthusiasm...had a request to accept a return but eBay will charge me 3 times more than the original postage cost for the return postage. Another buying claims part of their bundle doesn't work so have given a partial refund. Also, I haven't had the 100 free listing offer for ages...I wonder if it's because of the problems I've been having with these two buyers

jenmcspen · 04/12/2014 08:43

Have managed to clear a few more bits but am def losing momentum! How is everyone else getting along?

fairisledog · 04/12/2014 13:27

Have made over £300 now - so pleased I set my mind to it but work pressures and all the enjoyable social rituals of the Christmas season are eating into my ebaying time so I'm running out of momentum a little.

My rare item bidding is up to almost £30 so I have a frisson of excitement to look forward to seeing what it finally sells for.

The kids oddly patterned PJ's have also started to sell all of a sudden, probably because the cold weather has kicked in. I should have finished listing fleece jackets and winter coats by now but time is short......

How's everyone else done total wise ?

PurpleFrog · 04/12/2014 14:37

I haven't joined in this challenge but my selling target for the year was between £500 and £1000. I am currently sitting at £581.37 so I am happy - I would still like to nudge it over the £600 mark though! Grin

My main motivation is decluttering, and I am trying very hard not to eBay absolutely everything. I am aiming to sell one-third, donate one-third and chuck one-third.

Dumbledoresgirl · 04/12/2014 14:50

I'm at about the £250 mark. It would have been £265 as I made something for a friend who said she would send me some money for it but either she hasn't or the money has been stolen in the post. I don't like to ask her again.

I still have over 60 items listed. I could get to the £300 target if people bought my stuff, but I am not expecting to. The way I see it, all my stuff is on a 30 day BIN listing. If it goes, it goes. If it doesn't, it is there for January. I always need money in January! Grin

fairisledog · 05/12/2014 06:55

same here purplefrog Massive decluttering exercise on the go in fits and starts since the late summer.

Gave away anything friends and family were interested in taking off my hands, charity bagged some, donated to various Christmas fete/fair appeals for toys/games/dvds etc and ebaying the rest.

I wanted to clear out before Christmas presents for the kids start arriving but now they are mostly asking for or being offered vouchers for stuff so we may actually stay less cluttered in 2015.

fairisledog · 06/12/2014 08:15

OMG - my rare item bidding reached £70 ! Thank goodness I held my nerve and turned down all the offers of around the £40 mark if I did a buy it now.

Sadly, having neglected my parcels processing all week I am now committed to losing my Saturday morning to packing/labelling a dozen items and a trip to the post office and drop shop as I fear my delivery times star rating will be taking a hit when this lot finally arrive.

I know this is the kids stuff I've sold but I do feel I've really earned the money so should get to decide what it is spent on. Local collection items are difficult however as the kids see their old toys being handed over for cash so I usually give that to them having "taxed" them through sleight of hand for the ebay +mum combined selling fee.

I've decided that some of the proceeds will be used to buy stuff for my MN Secret Santa parcel.

glammanana · 06/12/2014 12:20

Well done fairisle on holding out for that better price,I know how you feel when you get an offer I had one last week for a collectable handbag at £35.00 and it reached far more than that in the end so my total has exceeded my £350.00 initial amount.
Nothing exciting selling at the minute but I think I will not renew any listings until after New Year as the postal system is dire at present and I don't need to collect any INRs on my account.
Well done everyone its been fun doing this and keeping up with what everyone has managed to do,I am starting the saving for DS1s wedding extra's in 2015 he gets married in 2016 so everything will go towards that "little" expense.

chocolatemartini · 22/12/2014 18:28

Well I've been kind of lurking on this thread as I didn't think I'd get around to it but you guys inspired me to sell some stuff and I've made over £300. Yay thanks all Thanks and wishing you all a merry Christmas
