Sold a boys jacket recently - title advertised as aged 5-6, with the detailed description stating "(size 110cms or aged 5-6years)"

They've said that it's not been sized correctly, and have linked to the ebay conversion chart which states 5 Years 104 - 110, 6 Years 110 - 116.

I'm not a professional seller, I just sell bits and pieces that the DCs outgrow. It also states that I do not accept returns in the Returns bit.

Wwyd??

how are they arguing it isn't correct?

if 104-110 is 5 and 110-116 is 6 then I'd say that "(size 110cms or aged 5-6years)" is totally accurate!

if you gave the information that is on the label of the garment then I fail to see how they can argue it. surely it's up to them to check what size they need??

SirChenjin · 15/05/2014 20:34

Well that was my thought - I did label it in the Description area as 110cm and to my mind 110 is 5-6, based on the sizing she linked to.

Do I just refuse to refund her money? I've bought things before on ebay and they haven't always fitted as well as I'd hoped, but just put it down to 'one of these things' and have put back on ebay. If she pursues through Paypal they will just refund her, won't they? Sad

Anyone?!

no you cannot refuse to refund her - stating no returns is worthless. You will have to tell her to return for a refund.

SirChenjin · 16/05/2014 08:04

She is now suggesting we 'go halfs' ie I return half the total cost to her and she keeps the item - otherwise she is going to start a dispute which (if she wins) will mean that I have to refund her the full price (cost of jacket plus cost of postage) plus the cost to return it to me.

Was I in the wrong re sizing? She claims "6 years aka 5-6 is 110-116cm, so this would read 116cm on the label. It is always the upper size that appears on the label. Ie size 5 in X shop is the equivalent of 4-5, not 5-6. Similarly, 110cm is the equivalent of 104-110cm, not 110-116cm"

I think advertising something at 110cms and 5/6 years is correct.

LavenderGreen14 · 16/05/2014 08:13

did you write in the auction what is on the label?

Most sellers will not offer a partial refund - return for full refund or nothing is what many would suggest. And the return cost is her responsibility, not yours.

deepinthewoods · 16/05/2014 08:17

Did you measure it? I sell over 300 second hand items a month, sometimes clothes, but you have to be scrupulous in your descriptions.
I always measure and state exact measurements, and details of the size on the label too.

You won't win a dispute. You are best to back down, ask for the item back and offer a full refund. Ebay will always side with the buyer anyway.

There are less troublesome things to sell on ebay than clothes.

I have 3000 feedbacks on ebay and 100% rating.

SirChenjin · 16/05/2014 08:17

Yes. The title stated Boys jacket aged 5-6, and then under the Description field I wrote "(size 110cms or aged 5-6years)"

I note she has already opened a dispute. In it, she states she plans to keep the jacket once I return her half the cost, and plans to sells the jacket to another parent at the school gate for the other half.

SirChenjin · 16/05/2014 08:19

If she returns will I have to pay her return postage? She seems to think I will.

OP posts:
deepinthewoods · 16/05/2014 08:20

I would ask her to return the jacket for a refund.

deepinthewoods · 16/05/2014 08:21

How much was postage?

ilovepowerhoop · 16/05/2014 08:22

if something is age 5-6 then the top measurement would be 116cm. 110cm would be age 5 (or age 4-5).

ilovepowerhoop · 16/05/2014 08:24

why did you write the cm's at all if you hadnt checked the actual size? Why not just write the age guide given on the label?

Different manufacturers use different sizes so I wouldnt just stick down what one guide says without checking it is true to that size guide.

deepinthewoods · 16/05/2014 08:24

I think the labelling is neither here nor there. I usually say something like

" Labelled age 5-6, chest measurement xxxcm, nape of neck to waist xxcm, shoulder seam to cuff xcm, that gives a buyer much more information. we all know how much sizes can vary.

Rosieliveson · 16/05/2014 08:24

What an annoying buyer!
I was under the impression that the buyer paid return postage. If say she can have full refund once item is returned in condition it was sold in.

SirChenjin · 16/05/2014 08:25

According to ebay's own sizing - 5 Years 104 - 110, 6 Years 110 - 116, so I would think that "110cms, aged 5-6" is a fair description? Confused

Postage was £3.90 (I only ever use recorded delivery - bitter experience) - so if she returns it do I have to pay the refund postage?

OP posts:
LavenderGreen14 · 16/05/2014 08:26

no you will not have to pay her return postage

you can escalate the case now and ask her to return it - ebay will not force you to give a partial refund either btw.

SirChenjin · 16/05/2014 08:26

ilove - there wasn't an age on it. It was bought on holiday last year in Germany, only the cm's were listed, so I googled and got the age 5-6 that way and included the cm's size as well

OP posts:
deepinthewoods · 16/05/2014 08:26

I don't think she sounds and annoying buyer- I think there are faults on both sides here. The buyer was a little naiive in buying something without checking that it would fit, and the OP was a little naiive by failing to give a full description.

gamerchick · 16/05/2014 08:27

Just tell her to return it at her own cost and you'll Issue a refund. My guess is she's already sold it on.

If you ask for it to be returned i can't see eBay agreeing to a partial refund.

I'm never selling clothes in eBay after reading in here, buyers quibble about the most pathetic of things.

SirChenjin · 16/05/2014 08:27

Have to run and take DC3 to school - how do I escalate the case?

Thanks for all the advice here btw Smile

LavenderGreen14 · 16/05/2014 08:27

and use My Hermes next time - £2.98 with proof of delivery - cheaper than RM and you get proof it has arrived, signed for with RM they don't bother with a signature half the time anyway so is a waste of money.

LavenderGreen14 · 16/05/2014 08:28

the option to escalate should be there in the case itself.

ilovepowerhoop · 16/05/2014 08:28

for e.g. on the Next website it says for a boys age 6 it is 116cm and the 5-6 size is given as 110-116cm
