Seller has added a 'seller charge' onto the total of the item I won.

I bid on an item that ended last night in the early hours.
I went online this morning and found that I had won the item for £14.80 plus £5.40 postage.

I clicked pay now and went to the invoice/payment/basket page and it said:

Subtotal. £14.80
Shipping. £5.40
Seller charge £15.00
----------
Order total. £ 35.20

I don't understand what the seller charge is.
It is mentioned nowhere on the auction listing.
There is no way to remove this charge.

I have contacted the seller but not received a response yet.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Any word from them today?

IrisWildthyme · 03/09/2013 20:18

If there's no reason for the extra charge it must be removed and the seller is obliged to sell the item to you at the auction price plus reasonable P&P. It may have been a typo if the seller needed to add on £1.50 to the P&P for a legitimate reason, but got the . in the wrong place.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 03/09/2013 21:17

i think if they havent replied tomorrow then i would open a case, as it might give them a kick up the bum and it will get ebay officially involved too

SuperiorCat · 03/09/2013 23:03

Agree with Iris - whose name I love - my friend is the author

jendot · 04/09/2013 08:55

I'm sure it's a mistake on the sellers part. One they see your message they will most likely apologies and remove it...crisis over!

I hate the way everyone automatically assumes fraud or ill intent when there is a problem.. As a seller the eBay automated system is a nightmare to deal with. Give the seller a chance.....

After sending a couple more messages (the funal one threatening to file a NPS case) the seller has finally responded.

The reply says:

"sorry I don't know why it says that, I've tried but I can't change it. Ebay said it cant be changed. The only thing I can think to do is for you to pay the amount eBay has requested and I will refund you the difference. You hav my word, I'm a honest person."

Hmm I don't know how to respond, other thank

Other than with, hahahaha NO.

I think when you go to pay you put in the amount so you can just put the correct amount? Whatever you do don't trust them to refund you. If this doesn't work make them raise a new invoice or re-list the item as a buy it now or second chance offer?

Not too familiar with eBay but there has to be a way round this.

lookoveryourshouldernow · 04/09/2013 12:09

... at one time there was a box below the total price/shipping where you could add/delete an amount by prefixing with either a + sign or a - sign - is that option still available ??

LilyBossom · 04/09/2013 12:54

no don't pay them - ask them for their email address and log into paypal and send payment direct and paste in the item number from ebay.

Cremolafoam · 04/09/2013 13:28

Agree with Lily

roguepixie · 04/09/2013 14:44

They go to the drop box and chose invoice.
They manually change postage charge.
They then PREVIEW the invoice - this way it will show new/amended p&p.
They issue invoice from that screen.

It is not hard. They can do it.

Flibbertyjibbet · 04/09/2013 14:54

If you send them direct to ther PayPal address it will not be automatically connected to this sale .... Could the seller then take the payment but open a case for non paying bidder as eBay won't 'know' you have paid?

I'd check with eBay customer services again.

MollyBerry · 04/09/2013 15:00

As flibberty says don't pay direct to PayPal or they could open a case against you not paying

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 04/09/2013 15:55

eBay is a bit difficult when I comes to sending different invoices for the same item.

I would - and have in the past cancelled the transaction and put it on a buy it now.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 04/09/2013 15:59

That sounds very dodgy. I wouldn't trust them to refund the money. There must be a way of them amending it, babe you checked with eBay to see if they say it can be amended?

Rooners · 04/09/2013 16:17

No it's not a problem if you use the paypal 'send money' tab - it gives you the option of 'ebay items' and you fill in that little bit and then send the correct amount.

I hope that would work anyway. It might default to the existing invoice.

IrisWildthyme · 04/09/2013 16:17

err - no, do not pay the higher amount. This definitely sounds like a scam to me but even if they are being honest this is not a good idea. I think I would open a dispute in the resolution centre and ask customer services to look into it. If they are being honest they will confirm the extra £15 is not due and it will get resolved.

"hello. Thank you for confirming that the £15 is a mistake. I do not agree that paying it and getting a refund is a good solution though. No offense intended but I think that the best thing is for me to lodge the issue with the resolution centre - I expect that doing this will open up the option for you to issue a correct invoice, or will allow them to correct it on your behalf."

don't pay anything separately outside ebay though - as other posters have said, that can open up a whole other can of worms.

Rooners · 04/09/2013 16:20

No, it shouldn't...paypal and ebay are affiliated, as are paypal and gumtree.

They can easily link the payment to your ebay purchase. It isn't a problem.

Rooners · 04/09/2013 16:21

In practice though the seller sounds like a chocolate teapot and their comms are at best lacking.

I'd be in favour of cancelling (mutually) and buying it from someone normal.

WeAreEternal · 04/09/2013 16:29

I had a look at paying from PayPal and just adding the transaction number, but as soon as I put the number in it changed the amount to that of the existing invoice.

The seller doesn't look like a scammer, they have good feedback, although most of it is as a buyer.

What happens if you put an email address (any, you are not going to complete the transaction) in. Then click pay for ebay goods and put the eBay id number in? Does it bring up her invoice or does it allow you to specify your own amount? If it looks like it may work ask her for her PayPal email address and try that way? Only thing I can think of that may get round it!

belatedmaybe · 04/09/2013 16:33

Wow great minds Grin oh well that won't work then!

Rooners · 04/09/2013 16:43

Oh that is a shame...have oyu suggested she contacts paypal by phone? They could explain to her what to do. (not ebay CS - paypal are far better)
