why can't I list make up as "used"?

Have there been some changes on ebay re. selling cosmetics?
I want to sell some Laura mercier eye shadow ( used once) and some OPi nail polishes- used a couple of times only- but it's only letting me list as new.

Didn't used to do this. Have tried in different browsers and still the same.

perhaps because it's not really good to buy 2nd hand eye shadow?

i'd think it was pretty unhygenic tbh, it's classed as 'personal' goods, surely?

ameliagrey · 09/12/2011 19:04

well, taking out your judgemental reply-it used to accept used cosmetics.

If anyone knows please, without making it a moral issue please let me know.

i'm not being judgemental, there is a huge risk with using pre-owned eyeshadow

i don't call the risk of passing on conjunctivitus a moral issue, do you?

and no i'm not saying YOU would knowingly sell on infected stuff, but there are plenty of people out there who wouldn't give it a 2nd thought, this section often discusses people selling on dirty clothing for instance

maybe ebay have only just brought in the restriction, and not before time if so.

Ewwwww

QuinnFabray · 09/12/2011 19:33

I think it's silly considering you can sell used make up brushes with no problem. I sell make up that I've used once or twice, I get round it by saying that the item has been opened and tested once. NO problems with doing that.

MotherPanda · 09/12/2011 19:35

You are also not allowed to sell second hand nappies - people get around it by listing them as new - but saying in bold in the description that they are used.

notcitrus · 09/12/2011 19:47

Ebay are a law unto themselves when it comes to banning stuff - eg nappy wraps count as 'underwear' despite obviously going over a nappy, so you can't sell used ones. (got a warning for that...)
Use euphemisms like 'opened and tested' or for nappies, 'washed'. Even in the description don't use 'used' as a competing seller can report your items and get them pulled.

ameliagrey · 09/12/2011 21:58

If anyone has any real advice on this please post.

I didn't ask for an opinion on whether it was hygenic- I did ask if the policy had changed.

This is because I have ebayed for years and lightly used cosmetics have always been on the site to buy or sell- I have sold cosmetics such as nail polish, and make up before that was top- end of range, had been used maybe once ( as in unwanted gift) and was snapped up by buyers.

(FWIW lots of things you can buy are harmful- cigarettes and alcohol- doesn't mean you can't buy them though, does it? Smile)

it looks like it has never been allowed judging by this

QuinnFabray · 09/12/2011 22:07

Um, I did offer you real advice.

I sell top end make up that has been used once or twice, and I list it as "opened and tested", as do many other sellers, since the eBay rules changed.

ameliagrey · 09/12/2011 22:59

thanks Quinn I meant everyone else- I'll do as you suggest.

I've got an eye shadow palette which I bought without seeing in the flesh and tested the colours on my hand once- too dark for me.

fergoose those posts are from 2011- I've been selling for about 5 years and in the past it was allowed.

OP posts:
fergoose · 10/12/2011 08:19

well maybe you just got away with it as no-one reported you?

Feenie · 10/12/2011 08:21

Ewwww. Second hand eye make up - regardless of how many times it has been used - is definitely icky.

ameliagrey · 10/12/2011 10:01

Fergoose- don't know how many times I have to say this- but it was allowed before- so not a case of "getting away with it" at all! Lots and lots of people sold used items.

The other point is- no one is making anyone buy used make up are they?

Sure, some of you might not want to- but you cannot deny that others don't feel the same, or else it wouldn't sell, would it? Buyers do have a choice, you know.

ameliagrey · 10/12/2011 10:01

Oh- and if you think eye make up is bad, I've seen 2nd hand lipsticks there too years ago.

OP posts:
Feenie · 10/12/2011 10:11

Yeah, but some dim people don't know the risks. I've had girls in ladies' toilets in clubs/pubs asking to borrow eyeliner/mascara.

fergoose · 10/12/2011 10:12

Amelia - why don't you go and ask on the community boards then - I can only presume eBay have stopped allowing sellers to sell used makeup.

FabbyChic · 10/12/2011 10:17

You haven't been able to list used make up for at least three years.

Here's what eBay have to say about it in their help pages

pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/used-cosmetics.html

TheOriginalNutcracker · 10/12/2011 10:19

I had this problem. I wanted to sell some bobby brown concealer, and i had tested it on the back of my hand, so there was a slight mark on the top.

I listed it as used and ebay removed it. I relisted it as new, but explained in the description, why there was a mark etc and it sold fine.

Obviously, this hadn't actually been used though really. Tbh i'd not buy lipsticks or eye make-up that had been used.

WhoopsyLa · 10/12/2011 10:25

Opened and tested is not fair....not if it's used! As an occasional ebayer I would not know that that meant "Used" YACK! Gross.

fergoose · 10/12/2011 10:26

no i agree - I would think open and tested was totally different to used - sounds grim. I am glad eBay don't allow it any more.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/12/2011 10:32

What a load of rubbish. I bought By Terry rose foundation - £97 new so bought a half used pot on ebay for £22 - it was fine, lovely in fact.

WhoopsyLa · 10/12/2011 10:41

Yes but did it say it was half used? If so then fine...you didnt mind. But opened and tested is not the same as used and if I bought makeup that said opened and tested and then found it half empty I would want a refund.

Feenie · 10/12/2011 14:06

And eye make up is different altogether - cross infection, very nasty.
