Hi there.

Looking to divorce ex husband. We have been separated for about 5 years and had no reason to get it done as neither party looking to remarry and things amicable, we get on, co parent etc. No messy financial stuff to sort. Quickie Dirvorce want £199. Is this legitimate? Can't work out if they are offering a proper process or if it's a bit of a scam.

Thanks for reading.

I’ve been separated three months married a year
I filled in the form on my phone and my divorce is now underway

I’ll do the financial order when that’s done

it’s one fee

why would you pay a service?

monsterradeliciosa · 05/03/2023 13:27

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/03/2023 08:45

I would expect that the 'quickie divorce' is a service that shows you how to fill in the forms and then you'd have to pay the court fees on top.

The forms themselves are not hard and if you have made your own financial arrangements and know the whole thing will be uncontested, you can do them yourself just by reading what it tells you to put.

The strangest thing, I found, is that when you get the decree absolute, it is just a sheet of A4 from a normal printer, not any kind of official-looking form. Don't throw it away by accident!

When would you need it?
just for the financial order?

PritiPatelsMaker · 05/03/2023 13:28

A Financial Agreement Order can be be Consent, or if you don't agree, it can be decided by a District Judge.

You should always get one. You might agree now but it's always in your interests to get one, you'd be mad not to.

As for the Divorce Application fee, if you are on certain benefits or a low income, you might be eligible for help with the Court fee.

You don't need to use any service, got to Gov.uk and file it yourself. You'll need to pay the £500 or whatever it is now.

But you will need to pay for a consent order separately, that cost us about another £2000 but essential for a clean break. We made all our own financial agreements, we just had it finalised.

Two grand? I thought after divorce you pay 279 for the financial order and I want a clean break

I’m just sorting mine but don’t know the process

i did the divorce online and applied for the fee to be paid as I earn under £1,400/month so obviously I can’t afford a gran can you shed any light for me please?

WinoLino · 05/03/2023 13:34

Yes I'm going to get one. I think I'm going to go through Amicable. A) because I have ADHD and filling in forms is very hard and B) because I can pay the fees over 3 months.

But yes, I'm definitely going to get a consent order based on advice here ☺️

PritiPatelsMaker · 05/03/2023 13:35

@monsterradeliciosa the £2k is probably the bill for a Solicitor.

crosstalk · 05/03/2023 13:36

Something in the Times or DM today about someone googling quickie divorce and signing on to some sharks who then realised she could get it free from a government website but then couldn't get her £700 back from the sharks .

Don't waste your money on them, and use it for the financial order.

Please, please don't pay a company to fill in forms for you.

Citizens Advice or CLOCK will do it for free.

i did the forms on my phone whilst crossing the road and if I can do that you can
its literally your names then upload a picture of the marriage certificate

it’s so easy a child could do it
please don’t waste your money

Anotheradventureforme · 05/03/2023 13:43

@stripedcurtains Yes, you can add the information.
We did so (our split looked on paper very uneven, but he was nearer retirement, I had an inheritance coming up and this way we could both afford to live - albeit in a slightly less comfortable way than before!).
Even so, the judge still questioned it. It was more a 'Are you absolutely sure you realise what you are doing here?!'. Nothing to worry about, but reassuring that they do ask.
We then added a letter explaining further and giving more details (solicitor helped with a few ideas) and it all got nodded through.

And if you do have ADHD and you find filling in forms difficult, have you ever tried body doubling?

WinoLino · 05/03/2023 13:50

My partner is my body double but I want to surprise him in 7 months time when it's complete! I could ask my mum though. Thank you

OP posts:
PritiPatelsMaker · 05/03/2023 13:53

Going around to your Mum or getting her to come to you sounds much more fulfilling and way cheaper than paying a company to do it for your and you could even bury her a treat with all the money you'd save Wink

WinoLino · 05/03/2023 13:53

Ha ha that's true! Thank you

If I go through government website, will there be a section to complete a consent order? And can I then choose which level I want, as in how much I pay? Or if I start the process myself will I then be forced to pay like £2k further down the line for a consent order? Thanks

This tells you how do do everything step by step.

When you do it on the gov website it asks you if you want a consent or financial order. They are the same thing, except a consent order you are already know and have agreed your split. A financial order is if you need the court to decide the split.
And your ex needs to sign the divorce, you can't present it to him as a done deal in 7 months time.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/03/2023 14:21

Monsterradeliciosa Do you mean the decree absolute paperwork? You'd need it if you wanted to use it to support your name change back to maiden name without a deed poll, and would certainly need the form to get married again.

PritiPatelsMaker · 05/03/2023 14:24

I think the OP meant her current DP. I could be wrong though Wink

ancientgran · 05/03/2023 14:28

Mine cost £5 but that was 40 years ago. They did a thing called a green form that was a bit like legal aid, hardly anything extra as we agreed finances and children although the judge got funny about the agreement as he said it was too flexible and would break down. I convinced him it would work and it did. I suppose it is all different now.

Definitely different and I don't think there's legal aid for divorce now.

Yes that's correct. That's how much the solicitor charged to write up, file it etc etc (and charged for sending us both copies 😒)

It’s actually really unclear
I’ve fine the first step
unclear on the second
I’ll be going to citizens advice for help

There is with domestic abuse but I just applied for fee waive based on income

Hope it goes through smoothly and you're rid of him soon.
