Diabetic Ketoacidosis

MoodyBlues1 · 19/02/2024 15:48

I have a feeling my partner is heading for Diabetic Ketoacidosis . He has lost a lot of weight for no reason. regularly his bloods are 24 + ( sorry don't use the new reading), blurred vision, extreme tiredness, feeling sick, thirsty. Has stopped taking his medication for months. I feel 24 is excessively high but he seems unconcerned. Am I right to be worried.

Yes! Why isn’t he taking care of his blood sugars?

wontforget · 19/02/2024 15:55

. Has stopped taking his medication for months.

come again?

wontforget · 19/02/2024 15:55

he’s basically slowly committing suicide

r0ck · 19/02/2024 15:58

My H had bloods that high when his T1D was first diagnosed and he ended up hospitalised. You are right to be concerned.

LifeExperience · 19/02/2024 16:05

DKA is a life threatening condition with an approximately 5% death rate with emergency medical care. It is universally fatal within about a week without prompt medical care. Source: my T1D daughter who's also a doctor. And yes, T2D patients can, in extreme circumstances, get DKA and die. It happened to a friend of mine.

HowDoWeDoThisPlease · 19/02/2024 16:06

Is he type 1 or type 2 op?

HowDoWeDoThisPlease · 19/02/2024 16:07

And what are his usual diabetes medication, and why has he said he’s stopped taking them?

Itscatsallthewaydown · 19/02/2024 16:09

Does he fancy losing his limbs one by one?Why on earth is he behaving like this?

Icystars · 19/02/2024 16:09

Oh god how scary. I have a T1D in the family and 24 for a prolonged period is not good at all.

idontlikealdi · 19/02/2024 16:12

Why is he not taking his medication? T1 or T2?

Paninaro94 · 19/02/2024 16:15

If he is still testing his BGs then he hasn’t given up altogether so there is some hope there.

Is he Type 1 or Type 2? I’m guessing 2 because T1 without medication wouldn’t be possible for so many months.

MoodyBlues1 · 19/02/2024 16:15

Well to answer a couple of questions he is type 2 diagnosed about 10 years. He is not on insulin, was on a couple of meds (Jardiance and Glyisiside . About 6 months ago the DR said he needed to go to hospital with a view to going onto insulin but has not happen and he ran out of meds. Quiet honestly he is in total denial. I have tried to discuss but falls on deaf ears. The nausea and lack of appetite is the latest thing.

does he have children?
does he work?

MoodyBlues1 · 19/02/2024 16:17

*paninaro he only tests when I force the issue like yesterday as he was literally falling asleep on his feet and give him my tester, as I don't even think he has a working one. He shrugged his shoulders at 24.

Paninaro94 · 19/02/2024 16:19

Denial is unfortunately something that can happen when you’re managing a long-term medical condition like diabetes but your husband needs to address this asap.

He needs to know insulin is not the end, many people find T2 much easier to manage and their quality of life far better when they move onto it.

MoodyBlues1 · 19/02/2024 16:19

Wont that's exactly what the DR said word for word. Yes he has 3 grown up children and works.

OP posts:
Paninaro94 · 19/02/2024 16:20

What does he do for a living that would not be seriously affected by walking round with BGs that high?

MoodyBlues1 · 19/02/2024 16:22

Paninaro I know as have been on insulin myself for 10 years and have offered to help as second nature to me. But I can't force him.

wontforget · 19/02/2024 16:27

how in earth is he managing to work?

please say he’s not driving?

how long have you been with him?

bruffin · 19/02/2024 16:27

I didnt know i had diabetes and was unwell , i had an infection but also Gp took my blood sugar , it was 26 and keytones were high as well.
GP sent me straight to A&E . Dh drove me. I was there less than 10 minutes and took me into Resus.put on a drip for dehydation. I was there for a day then another 5 days in hospital.
I actually had DK without Acidosis. My symptoms were very much like your DH. I went straight onto insulin and metformin (slow release) it took acwhile to decise whether i was typev1 or 2 but eventually was told type2

MoodyBlues1 · 19/02/2024 16:36

bruffin funnily enough I had an almost identical experience before I went on insulin and felt very poorly when rushed to hospital. I am going to really hammer him about this, I don't think he realises how serious. I don't really get it as if I was at that level I would feel dreadful and he seems to function quite well.

Icystars · 19/02/2024 18:12

Perhaps he’s got used to how it feels to be 24 and therefore it feels ‘normal’ to him.

MoodyBlues1 · 20/02/2024 15:41

@Icystars clearly that, I would be on my knees at 24. It is having an effect but think he has been this way too long and body used to it.

My brother was the same, type 2...didnt take meds, ended up on insulin, didn't take it or eat properly, he lost half a foot and 2 toes, didn't learn and ended up up in a coma other week. Hes not old either. Tell your fella this is what happened my brother.

wontforget · 21/02/2024 08:21

He is actively and consciously being reckless with his health

and the NHS will end up having to pick up the pieces 😞
