Weight loss failure

Hello everyone.

So the past 4 weeks, I've been on a no carb and sugar diet since finding out I had type 2 diabetes.

I've weight every Saturday, and all I've lost in 4 weeks is 4lb. I seem to be stuck now and the scales haven't moved for almost 2 weeks. I've stayed at the same weight.

My nurse was happy for me to completely cut out carbs and sugar as I've high cholesterol too. I was going to begin the Keto diet, but I can't have the fats. It's been a really boring, mundane diet, but I've got the Will power to stick at it and have been doing so.

Please, if anyone has any advice as to why they think I'm still not losing weight, that would be great. I'm all eyes and ears.

Thanks so much. Smile

What have you replaced what you have cut out with?

what is your movement like? Alcohol?

This is what I have say on a daily basis.

Morning - banana, 1 small cup of raspberries with almond milk, and a 1 egg, small omelette.

Lunch - sometimes a ham/chicken salad

Dinner - salmon and steamed veg

Sometimes a snack, protein only

No alcohol, I'm T-total. Or only ever have a Chombord at Xmas or an orange gin at parties which are so rare anyway. I'm not a fan of alcohol. Plus I've been on medication for migraines for almost 3 years so I tend not to drink for that reason too.

I only drink almond milk, and have also cut out dairy cause of the high fats.

Can you ask the nurse for a dietitian referral? They might be able to help with more interesting food.

ElliePhant28 · 11/11/2023 08:22

I'd recommend this book and if you use Instagram join the community on there for tips and support. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0CGY1Y9KK/ref=tmmkinnswatch0?ie=UTF8&qid=&sr= You will lose weight on this but you need to read the book to fully commit to the life change, understand how your body works and how to make food work. It's fascinating but not rocket science. I wish they taught this in schools. It completely makes sense.

I think you have misinterpreted a lot of what the nurse said

She told me to cut our sugar carbs and high fats including dairy, so no cheese, milk, oils. That is what she told me to do. I asked her if Keto was fine and she disagreed and said no due to the high fats offered on the keto diet. I've not misinterpreted at all

I will need to I think, cause it's been difficult to know what to live on with such limitations.

She's wrong! A low carb diet (which shouldn't be a no carb diet, as you will be eating veg/salad and some fruit, all of which are carbs) is also a high fat one.

Also, if you're eating a banana, that is pretty high in carbs.

This is exactly what I've been thinking that's why I'm so confused! It's impossible to have no carb no sugar diet! I'd be living off water then.

Surely you should be offered a course, my FIL went on something called DESMOND, and learned so much

ask your nurse to refer you to this.

Aw ok, thank you I'll call the surgery on Monday and speak to them. They've not mentioned it yet. I was diagnosed 5 weeks ago. I've had no support really.

I am low carb not no carb and I have a few snacks that feel like a carb treat
If you get the alpro high protein plan yogurt it's lovely and creamy. Sometimes I mix it with a protein yogurt so it's a high protein low sugar yogurt which leav
es you full.

Other tricks are puches of olives for yr bag so you are not caught out by hunger.

Last March I was on the Jan weight los thread and I'd lost 6lbs and then my weight loss stalled. But I kept going regardless. Weight loss is not linear they say and that was true for me. On good weeks I'd lost not a gram, then on weeks where I wouldn't have felt robbed not to lose a pound, I'd suddenly have lost a few pounds

Just keep going. My progress was so slow it was painful but I've lost 8.5 kilos since last December.

See it not as a diet but as practicing maintenance. That helped me.

CarolHath · 11/11/2023 09:15

Hey Op. look up masteringdiabetes on Instagram. Lots of research now that a plant based whole food (low fat) diet is helpful and actually reversing type 2. Your nurse is correct. Fruit has always been incorrectly demonised. It's the combo of sugar with the usual high fat western diet that is the issue. You should be eating unlimited fruit and veg.

Unabletomitigate · 11/11/2023 09:18

Hey there,
can i suggest you look at dr Eric Westman on youtube. He explains keto very well.

And you do not need to worry about the level of cholesterol in your blood. It does not cause heart disease. You need to eat fat on a low carb diet.

Your nurse is a dangerously wrong.

When you cut out carbs you need fat to thrive. High cholesterol is a carb problem not a fat problem.

Go keto. I did for pre diabetes and I also lost 6 stone. That was 8 years ago, I’m still keto and my cholesterol is perfect.

Picklewicklepickle · 11/11/2023 09:25

Regardless of what you’re eating and what you might want to change re: eating for diabetes, have you considered if your expectations might be a little unrealistic? Because 4lbs in 4 weeks is a good, consistent rate of fat loss unless you have a really large amount to lose. It’s normal to see the scales stall or fluctuate throughout the month, especially if you’re a woman. Can be hormones, increased food volume, water retention, extra salt etc. Don’t be disheartened just yet, it’s longer term trends you need to look at.

Thanks for your message you have hit the nail on the head. Great advice and it all makes complete sense .

I only need to lose around 2 stone, I'm not huge, and I'm 5ft 3 so I am small, but have a big chest.

I was disappointed at 4lb but the way you've written your comment all makes sense. It is harder to lose weight for us women. I'm 43 now so finding it much slower then in my 30s. I'm

Thanks again

Do you have to weigh foods or put the amount you have into an app?

If you want to join us on the Bootcamp thread (which we start on Monday) you don't have to weigh or count anything.

If you're doing keto, (which Bootcamp isn't) then you will, as it's a very strict, less than 20g carbs per day plan.

I'd like to say a huge thank you each & very one of of you for the advice & support. It really has helped & really means a lot. I will firstly contact my GP & nurse Monday morning, mention DESMOND. Then also ask for a better eating plan.

The videos and links have all been so helpful. Thank you for those. I will continue to take all of your advice, as I feel I've been doing this diet wrong the whole time.

All the very best, take care of yourselves. You've all be stars.
