Am I right to be worried or hysterical?

My son has lost a bit of weight recently, but he’s a fussy eater. He has always drunk a lot so nothing is different. He has developed some almighty mood swings and literally will sleep all day. Initially we thought puberty spurt, but after a week of constant sleeping we are trying to get a GP appointment on Monday. He’s alert when he’s up, just constantly tired for the past week or so.

I have a BG machine and did his readings tonight, they were:

5.7 pre meal
10.1 1hr post meal
9.4 2hr post meal.

Is this high?

Pipandmum · 10/07/2020 21:15

Yes. Keep monitoring it but if goes really high without coming down call 111 straight away.

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 10/07/2020 21:15

I’d get a GTT to be sure. That’s on the higher side of normal.

SimonJT · 10/07/2020 21:18

I’d personally call 111 if they were my readings along with the other symptoms.

Microwaveoven · 10/07/2020 21:20

Sorry OP I am not sure if you are saying he has diabetes and that's why you have a GB machine or he hasn't got diabetes but you have a GB machine for another use?

Either way, it's high. Take him to the doctors ASAP. My brother has diabetes and was extremely ill (fell into a coma) before he had a diagnosis. If the warning signs are there get him checked out.

AKissAndASmile · 10/07/2020 21:21

Sorry to be dense but does he have a diagnosis of diabetes? How old is he? Non-diabetics' sugars wouldn't go above 7.8. Those numbers are quite high. Can we call 111 anymore or is it just for covid stuff?

AKissAndASmile · 10/07/2020 21:23

Agreed. A lot of type 1s are only discovered when they go into diabetic ketoacidosis shock

Itisasecret · 10/07/2020 21:23

He doesn’t have diabetes. I have the monitor because I had GDD and I like to monitor my own sugar.

OP posts:
Itisasecret · 10/07/2020 21:24

Sorry if I was not clear, he’s 12 and 1/2.

In that case he needs medical attention tonight.
Microwaveoven · 10/07/2020 21:30

Take him to hospital now then OP. My brother was 10 when he fell into a coma. Literally as my mum was carrying him into the hospital doors. It was horrific and I wouldn't wish it on my own worst enemy.

My brothers signs were there for a week before anyone twigged on.
His signs were...
Pale and then going grey within hours
Wetting himself
Feeling very sick
Sleeping a lot

Makes me sad just thinking about how we didn't see it in time.

Children progress extremely quickly.

Wecandothis99 · 10/07/2020 21:31

Gosh I had GDD and was told my child could develop type 2 diabetes as a result. I thought it was ridiculous if I'm honest because I thought it's a lifestyle thing but this is interesting as maybe that is actually the case here. Good thing you checked and you can get sorted ASAP tomorrow (tonight is a bit extreme as it's probably not an emergency). Don't worry, it will all be fine, if it's diabetes they do so much for them now.

Microwaveoven · 10/07/2020 21:36

No, if it diabetes you have to go now. You can't wait until tomorrow. Tomorrow could be the day he goes into a coma.
OP you take him in, they say he's fine, no diabetes, that's great. The doctors won't judge you. They are there to save lives.
But if it is then he will be safer to go now.

Itisasecret · 10/07/2020 21:37

I’m terrified but glad I posted, thank you. My husband thinks I’m over reacting but I did think they were too high. I’ll get him seen.

OP posts:
Microwaveoven · 10/07/2020 21:39

OP I don't want to terrify you. Not my intension. I just wish we had taken my brother a day earlier . Or a week earlier.

Itisasecret · 10/07/2020 21:41

Yes I understand. I’ll be logging off now thank you. If anyone wants to leave some messages I’ll read them when I’ve charged my phone.

OP posts:
Microwaveoven · 10/07/2020 21:42

Oh another sign I forgot was he looked very gaunt in the face by the end of the week.

With hindsight it's easy to see the signs there all along. But we just didn't put 2 and 2 together and I will always feel bad for not thinking it through more.

You have done so well at spotting the signs.

Fingers crossed we are wrong and he is just having a growth spurt and a sugary day! Good luck OP. Take care.

Butterfly44 · 11/07/2020 03:54

Yep my husband thought I was overreacting. I hoped he was right but turned out mums instinct is strong stuff! The 2hr post is higher than normal. Would have expected that to be back down to around 5mmol by that time. Perhaps test again after eating. Though the symptoms you describe add to it. The constant drinking and weeing is a definite worry. The earlier it's caught the better so go get checked out to eliminate!

missnevermind · 11/07/2020 04:05

Yes the same here. My son was drinking litres of water. He was grey and his face was very gaunt. I was on the phone to 111 as he started to fall into a coma. They had an ambulance out to us in minutes.
The paramedic kept asking me what his numbers were but I had no idea what she was talking about but they recognised it immediately. He ended up in hospital for a week but started looking so much better just after a few days.

LockedDownKnockedUp · 11/07/2020 04:30

@Wecandothis99 OP is doing the right thing not waiting to have him seen, if it turns out he has diabetes he will need to be treated as soon as possible. A lot of people don’t understand the dangers of high sugar levels (admittedly they’re not sky high levels, but for someone without diagnosed diabetes they are outside the normal range) as quite often only the dangers of low sugars are emphasised.

My Mum and brother are both T1, my brother got admitted to hospital with ketoacidosis when he was about 12 and it was terrifying. The doctors said that my Mum recognising the signs and getting him there early saved him. He wasn’t even allowed to drink water bless him.

OP, so good that you check these things. My Mum always tested all of us regularly if we went to the loo more often than normal, drank a lot or lost any weight. I used to dread the summer as it meant more blood sugar tests because you’re generally thirstier in the heat haha, but definitely a good idea to keep an eye on things.

@Itisasecret please let us know how your son gets on. Hopefully all is well, hormones can cause levels to fluctuate but always best to get these things checked when there are other symptoms too. Tell your DH it’s always better to be safe than sorry, trust your instincts 😊.

Isthisfinallyit · 11/07/2020 05:07

The 2hr post meal one is too high. I'd have him checked out in the morning (if you haven't already). Don't let anyone make you wait days/weeks. It's not sky high but lets prevent damage before it occurs, right?

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 11/07/2020 11:04

How is your ds doing ?

Itisasecret · 14/07/2020 10:41

He is ok thank you, his sugars were all over the place on the weekend, he is fine now though. The answer is they do not know. More bloodwork to be done, it isn't looking like he is diabetic though.

OP posts:
Itisasecret · 14/07/2020 12:56

Spoke too soon, got to be seen again. Now at 15.5 and half asleep.

OP posts:
GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 14/07/2020 13:23

Poor ds, hopefully you will get some answers today Flowers

Lightofthephoenix · 14/07/2020 15:11

@Itisasecret hope they can help him this time.
