Am I right to be worried or hysterical?

My son has lost a bit of weight recently, but he’s a fussy eater. He has always drunk a lot so nothing is different. He has developed some almighty mood swings and literally will sleep all day. Initially we thought puberty spurt, but after a week of constant sleeping we are trying to get a GP appointment on Monday. He’s alert when he’s up, just constantly tired for the past week or so.

I have a BG machine and did his readings tonight, they were:

5.7 pre meal
10.1 1hr post meal
9.4 2hr post meal.

Is this high?

Well phoned 111 who said he needed to be seen by the GP within 6 hours. GP nurse has said he’s fine and they will have a routing telephone consultation at the end of the week. As he’s not diabetic I don’t have to bother with the sugar chicks either.

I literally do not know what is going on with him, what’s causing these spikes and what is causing him to be so tired.

@Itisasecretdid the GP nurse do when she saw him?

Seems strange for the sugar levels to be fluctuating outside of the normal range. Especially as he’s feeling unwell too! Have they checked him for any infections? I know that my Mum and brother both have varying levels when they’re poorly (but they’re both actually diabetic).

Hope you get some answers soon!Flowers

GP nurse didn’t even see him, although 111 said he needed to be seen. Apparently his readings aren’t ‘that high’ and finding him on the floor in a deep sleep at 2pm, with blood sugars of 15.5 is ok to wait until Friday.

She said not to check his sugar anymore either as he’s not a diagnosed diabetic. The only reason I know his sugars are all over the show is because I checked them. Yesterday, he would have had a lovely normal reading. Today he’s not been lower than 8.9.

111 said he needed to be seen, Dr’s surgery said he will be fine! I know some thing isn’t right and is causing this but I don’t know what. Agh!

I’d wait until the surgery is closed and call 111 again and ask for an out of hours appointment 🙈. They should have at least tested his urine to check if there’s glucose in it surely?!

What are his levels like in the morning after not having eaten overnight?

8.9 this morning.

There is some really hysterical adviceon here, 10.1 is not high enough to cause a coma. If he was diabetic he would almost certainly be type 1 at his age, and to go DKA (or what people on here are referring to as a diabetic coma) he would have to have sustained blood sugar at least in the high teens. When I was diagnosed as a teenager I had BG of 23 on a Thursday and my urgent referral to the hospital didn't come through until the Monday. He isn't going into DKA with blood sugar of 10.1. To be honest if he was type 1 diabetic you would be seeing much higher blood sugars. Doesnt mean he should be checked out but those readings don't suggest an emergency or diabetes on their own.

@Fettfrett, oh definitely agree.

I think for the most part people were just assuring OP that she wasn’t being hysterical. I think some of the readings were higher than 10.1, so people suggested that she get him checked over to be on the safe side and not ignore it like her DP was suggesting.

The GP nurse not seeing him is a little concerning though after NHS direct saying he should be seen.

When my brother had DKA his readings were just HI, so in no way suggesting OPs DS is going to get DKA. Just that she’s right to keep an eye on him.
